After a lot of research and faffing around I decided that I might plump for one of these :-

Scroll down to the Project Speed Box DS Strobo and have a gander.
It's supposed to work with motors upto 16V, 230V @ 50hz i.e the Garrard 301. I can change the speed in increments of 0.2%. I was thinking of using one of these and my PS Audio P10, between the two I should get the vast majority of features that a lot of the more expensive external PSU's offer at a fraction of the price.
Any ideas or comments most welcome.
