I think one of the secrets of the NS-1000/M design in addition of the wonderful Be-drivers is the decision to use infinite baffle instead of ported enclosure for that 12" bass driver making the whole package work so balanced and seamless manner..

NS1000M's are on my bucket list of speakers but I'm happy with my ATC's, Tannoys, and Quad ESL 57's.

I doubt that he has preserved the original character. One of the things I like about the NS-1000M is the way the sealed cabinet handles bass and in particular, reproduction of drum kit, they have a very tight and realistic sound, which works in even my modest sized room. This will almost certainly have changed by going bass reflex.

Still, its a nice job he's made of them, and if he's happy that's all that matters.

Same here! A mates just bought some ATC SCM40's which I'll have to give a listen to as well.

I actually borrowed a pair of SCM40's for a couple of weeks when I was considering replacing my ES14's but although they were good I didn't feel them better in all areas. The NS-1000M's I now use are significantly better in every respect.

Active ATC's vastly out perform any passive ATC or NS1000m's I've ever heard.

They do its true. I'll still prefer the Yamaha mids though, and the RAAL tweeters are the icing on the cake. I must activate mine at some point.

Yep the Mids are prolly better in the Yams, altough the best mid range I've ever heard is sitting in front of me right now in the big MG 15", very lucid when paired with a big enough valve amp (100 watts) to grab them by the short and curlie's.

I know what you mean. I've heard an awful lot of speakers (bad, good and superb), but when I fire the Tannoys up, it's just bliss. I can hear right through the speakers and deep into what's going on!

I normally don't like thread drift (slapped hand to myself :spank:) but again I agree, you can see through the speakers, it's uncanny. It's also uncanny that you can have two 300+ litre speaker cabs sitting no more than 8 feet in front of you giving you exceptionally good near side listening capabilities with an immense and wide sound stage.

Not in my experience - and not by quite a large margin. As for the mid of the Tannoy's, well that's another story for another time but the short story is that I disagree.
