Any "first day advice", been working freelance for a while now and this is a different ballgame!
Jobs office based, meeting with Clients etc further down the line.
Looking forward to the new challenge....so not worried or obsessing about it.
Just wondering if there's any useful insight out there. :)

Relax and enjoy it. Be honest and open and try to to settle in as quickly as possible.
If it's not too big an office, take some cakes with you. Great way to make some friends!

Unless they are on a diet after the holiday, may not be such a good idea this time of the year.
The best news of all is that you'll miss the foul mood of the first Monday back!
As others have said, be yourself.
In many places, you'll be treated differently because you are permanent but that will be because people will see the point in investing in getting to know you.
The only bits of advice I'd give is that, often, when you are first in an office, the incumbents expect you to come over and introduce yourself and you can cause offence by not doing so. This is contrary to all the advice we always get about winding our necks in and not taking the initiative early on.
Also, and I'm sure you do anyway, you'll go miles by greeting everybody (from reception onwards) when you see them on a daily basis. I find it amazing the number of people who don't. A friendly smile goes a very long way to getting you accepted.

That would take me hours each day.
I do greet the people I see on a regular basis, but that is the way of life in France.

I changed offices 4 times in a year and had 3 different jobs which meant I became quite adept at navigating the politics and learning how to make introductions.
As others have said, time invested in building relationships early on will come in useful later when you want people to do stuff for you.

aside the moral boost, some useful info too!
Take a mug with you, otherwise you might be given the grot pot that was last used by Harry Halitosis who just used to rub it on his trousers after a hard days brewing:D It also shows that you want to settle in. I worked in many offices and I have seen new starters that wanted to try to get in with the "in-jokes" and "banter" at an early stage to be one of the boys. Not a good idea, but I am sure you knew that.

Give them until the end of the week to get used to you, then turn up at the Friday PM tea break with a box of cakes. That'll go down well as long as you've enough to go round. :)

I do this type of thing (meeting new people) a lot. Not that I changed jobs, but I go to different locations and meet different folks. Always good meeting new people, well I like it
Different for me this week as I finish on thursday with no real prospects for the long term. Not been out of work for over 25 years...gulp!

I was the same Neil, it can get disheartening after a while if you let it get on top of you.
I found it good to try to keep a healthy(ish!) perspective about it, sometimes easier said than done mind...
Some terrible advice on this thread...
When starting a new job always walk in there on your first day like Christ come to cleanse the Temple.
Demand, don't ask. Criticise everything.
And don't, whatever you do, buy them cakes or biscuits; if you do it once they will expect it forever. You don't want to get in there every day to be asked 'where's the biscuits?' That really gets old very quickly.

I suppose it depends on what your skills and experience are and how much money you need/expect to earn but I've always found jobs through agencies - go somewhere as a temp, keep your mouth shut and your head down and do good work and eventually someone always retires or quits or moves departments and vacancy comes up. Since you are already there and a known quantity you get the job.

Hey mate , I'm sure your devilishly good looks and overwhelming charisma will win them over ( particularly all the women ) as soon as they clap eyes on you . Alternatively you can get yer heid doon and prove to them that you're a competent employee .

I speak to everyone at work from the cleaning staff to directors. Politeness cost nothing, and your work colleagues will appreciate you and (hopefully) warm to you.

Yes the Brera has been out of production for a few years now. Must be buying second hand, especially with the DPF/EGR modifications - you would not normally do those on a lease car.

We looked at a Brera way back but the soft top Honda won out, mate has the Brera we looked at first and he still loves it although he doesn't often drive it the way it can go.
I always reckoned if you can get through your first week on a new job you can get through owt.

George that's exactly the thing to do and I happen to think that the cleaning staff are as important as the directors and I've dealt with both quite happily ;)

Don't know what your age is Gary (?) but why not BE the office bike and make all your colleagues jealous, especially after all that time they've tried getting Lucy (or Barry - let's not get dragged down with stereotypes) from accounts just out for a simple drink and there you go straight in and they're all over you..
Make everyone tea and coffee often, is my other tip.
But then I've probably worked in an office for a total of 1.5 years in my life, the rest freelance.

Couldn't agree more Sir, sadly some people think cleaners are beneath them.
Our cleaning staff are mainly Ghanaian, amongst them are a qualified teacher and a time served engineer, unfortunately they cannot find work in there respective fields.
Day 2: In the big Brother House...
First day: Great.
Small Team, focussed and positive yet a relaxed vibe about the place.
Company expanding, a bit "bare bones" atm but growing with 7 figure order book.
Moving into new plush premises in Feb.
Staff all genuinely happy to be there, a family atmosphere I'd say, a buzz about the place...excitement about what the next chapter might be.
Director and my line Manager genuinely nice blokes.
Told to "have a play" for the first week, learn the systems etc.
Second Day: Even better.
Thrown into Project work, busy day, genuine "Well Done" from Managing Director and my Manager....think they threw me a bone to see what I could do.
Always happy to exceed expectations...no point sitting around waiting to be told what to do next, look for the work and the day will go faster.
Client meeting next week, Good oh.... :)

No! that's terrible advice! Never get involved in the tea and coffee rounds. Even if you are really busy and haven't got the time people will still insist on you taking your turn; it will take hours, you have to remember what drink everyone wants, whether they want milk and sugar - or not - for every individual and if you get it wrong - too much sugar, not enough, too weak, too strong etc they will moan their bags off.
And even if it is not your turn so you just go and get a brew for yourself they will all have a moan at how selfish you are. Steer clear!
