View Full Version : Metal protection grille for valve amp?

Hi folks -
Can anyone advise where I might be able to buy a protective metal grille for a valve amp?
I have a John Wood amp at home, as well as a boisterous 4 year old who has recently discovered the joys of flinging sofa cushions around the room!
Tried google and the 'bay, but no luck as yet - so thought I'd ask the knowledgeable folks here. Just the grille itself needed.
Hope I've posted in the right section - mods please move if not.

You might be able to adapt a light guard.. you can often find them on line
Do what I did and find a local light engineering shop to fabricate one for you out of steel mesh. It was £45 or so compared to the $600 Audio Research wanted. If you want to be flash you can then get it chromed or powdercoated :).

Yep, you will have to have one custom made, and figure a way of attaching it.
I suggest you just move the amp out of reach.
As ever, I prefer to address the problem 'at source'. Therefore, simply pop a pair of boxing gloves onto the kid, and it won't be able to throw any cushions!! Simples :)

It could pay to speak to firms importing Chinese valve amps. They often have extra stock of miscellaneous items. I'm sure a covering grille could be located. Icon Audio have a variety of vented clear plastic items they supply with their amps. Maybe they have something?

heh - thanks for the suggestions, folks.
matter of fact the 4 year old already has boxing gloves! doesn't seem to help much with the cushion flinging however...
I will look into having something custom made... I thought that might be the way ahead but just wanted to check in case someone said "oh you should speak to so-and-so who has a shed full". You never know.

Drats.. You could try trying it up instead? Other than that, there's always Chloroform :D

I knew I could count on getting some sensible advice here... :)
Lol - the sensible advice has already come from others. You're gonna have to get a cage made, dude (no, not for the kid) :eyebrows:

Hi Nick, I've got a spare cage that I had made up, but of course it all depends on what size you need.
Size in mm is 230 deep x 210 wide x 120 tall, with an open rear like this one, but a little taller:

About 45 years ago my brother had a Quad 22/II set up just fully serviced and revalved by Quad and the first of hid daughtersn was starting to crawl around and investigate things. The amps were on the floor and my sister in law was going mental about the danger to said offspring. In an act of selfless generosity, :D I offered to swap my then brand new Armstrong 621 for the Quads...... :mad::mad::mad: He said "Yes please" :mex: Now the point to this is I have a number of relatively pillow proof SS integrated and power amps, that were my arm twisted...... Oh well probably not twice in one lifetime :)

Hi Nick, I completely understand your problem. I have a new daughter who will be crawling in a few months. So I am already thinking about how to protect her from hot valves on my stereo 20 and to make sure she won't be able to pull the rack or speakers over.
It's not just the heat you want to be worried about, Simon, but the rather high HT voltage, should anything 'awry' occur!! ;)

hmmm... a cage for the 4 year old? I didn't think of that... it's tempting, very tempting... only problem is then I'd need an even bigger cage for the missus... !
probably be easier to get one huge cage and put the amp, myself, my TT and all the vinyl inside... :D

thanks for the kind offer Firebottle - that looks like just the kind of thing... but those Wood amps are pretty hefty fellas. Don't have it in front of me right now (away from home) but I'd guess it's roughly 40 x 30 cm? Will definitely investigate the option of getting something specially made. cheers.

Then earth it, will turn it into a Faraday cage and reduce the noise/RFI etc. Win win in my opinion. I still have an old Armstrong amp I'll swop for your valves if you want :lol:
