Following on from posts elsewhere on this and other sites, I was wondering if any of you Tannoyista's had ever heard their studio active models?

Going active if available is costly I know, but the prospects for improvement (if the active crossover is designed properly) are huge, as the amps' control over the drivers is much improved and the amps can be optimised for just the frequency ranges they're working on (in a dedicated amp-pack).

Obviously, not all active speakers get it right, but having heard some "studio" ATC actives once (200A's), the sheer impact and dynamic range was huge and far more than the single 12" 100A's I owned at the time.

Going active (valve?) with Tannoy would be incredible I reckon, the control being even better, the amp-loading simpler and, I suspect, cleaner than ever.

Has anyone ever heard any?

I bought a pair to use as monitors for a home project studio , they went back to the shop that same day.

Quite sharp , bass was hardly anything to write home about and balance was thin/weedy.

I settled for a pair of active fostex instead.

Do you mean the little ones, or the large DC models (DMT style), which I *thought* may be available in active form at one time?

I've heard sorry tales about the smaller ones as well..
