If you want some real SQ buy 4 EAT KT88 for 28 quadzillion quids and screw the KT120s.

You won't get the power but those EATs just sound STUPIDLY GOOD. Trust me. They do. Really. Better than any NOS I ever tried. And new.

I'll probably get had up for that with BS (which TBH does have some validity LOL) about circuits and differing systems and tastes etc but I'd bet they'd beat anything else you ever try. The trouble is the price...

IMO KT88's are nothing like as good as KT120's so go for KT120's if you amp will take them. :)

Sorry for asking this. What is the sound difference between the KT88 & KT120?

I think it's double the heater current.

My head hurts

Think I will get it and use it for a while then decide if different valves are needed :)

Sounds like a plan, Al.

IMHO Russian valves can almost always be bettered and the KT120 option is just that. Double the heater current won't mean much for SQ unless your speakers really do benefit from quite a bit more power.

Just my opinion and sorry to Jo... not having a go, honest:)

About an inch and a half! ;)

no problem, Justin, it's all down to taste and system etc. I guess it's down to the amp design too.

I've tried NOS GEC KT88's in the past along with other NOS types and 'for me' the KT120's kick them in to the dust so I highly recommend them. They are Russian made but they are made very well, the quality control is simply superb.

But a word of warning with the KT120's, just make sure the amp will take them. Some say that they are drop-in replacements for the KT88 but they are not in some applications.

You would need to ask the designer or if that's no longer possible have it looked over by someone who knows there onions in building such valve amps. Hope that helps.

+1 (with bells on). I've tried the EATs in the past, and if you can manage to find a set that last more than 10 mins (I'm being facetious here, but you get the point), as they're known for reliability issues, they do sound good, but not as good, IME, as a set of KT120s, used in amp that can take full advantage of their sonic potential. The John Wood amp comes into that category.

Al, Anthony sells KT120s, so my advice would be to buy some from him, as he'll test and measure them all in his valve tester, so that you know they're all A-ok, before he sells them to you, and you'll have that piece of mind :)

Also, be rest assured that your JW amp is safe to take KT120s, and that they will comfortably outperform the 6550s currently fitted.

Marco.

I honestly could not recommend the Tesla KT88s due to reliability but if the EAT's price premium hasn't fixed that then they'd be a total joke.

If it has without messing up the superb, and I really do mean superb sound quality, then I remain KT120 sceptical until my own ears actually hit a set and compare them in the same amp, with a set of speakers that isn't power fussy.

For all intents and purposes, though, go with the KT 120 advice.

I will add I hate the KT120's shape. They look like some shite lightbulbs attempting to look like candle flames - unsuccessfully.

In my experience the KT150 improves upon the KT120 in All areas of the audio spectrum, and I would recommend them should ones PS have sufficient headroom to accommodate the slight rise in current draw.

As an ARC ex-owner... that's fine you can't see the frigging things!:)

At least in the model you recently sold.

Interesting, Roger. I've not yet tried 150s, but Anthony has, and he didn't like them, which has put me off investing in some. No doubt the curiosity factor we get me at some point, though! :)
