I've been lately assigning genres to my digitized music collection, largely because I use a software player that uses genres with its random play feature.

I have a large number of Frank Zappa recordings, and I can't figure out what genre to put him under. I was thinking of just creating a genre called "Zappa".

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm truly curious as to how other people might classify this music.

Funny...Hot Rats was when I really started to appreciate him. "Peaches En Regalia", in fact.

But then, I've always had a soft spot for soulless intellectual jazz-rock. ;)

I liked the Mothers, and Ruben and the Jets is the only album I have now. I went to see him at the Albert Hall (in '67?) and he fell off the stage, IIRC!
I guess my tastes changed about the same time as he did, so we went our separate ways. I do remember having a copy of Uncle Meat; our cat ran out of the room whenever I played it. :D Rather how Dylan affects me!

The more I think about it, the more that makes sense, given the Zappa was influenced (even in his rock stuff) but 20th century composers.

Zappa isn't really easy to file under a genre. Best bet stick him in male solo artists or composers.
