I didn't know where I could fit this one in, so I hope it will be noticed here:).

I have been testing and trying out all sorts of LED lighting for years, but none of them satisfied my requirements. However, Philips just released a new range that has finally caught my attention. I bought the 5W one from their Econic range. Light output is equivalent to a 25W incandescent bulb. Colour temperature is 3100K, and when I run both the LED bulb next to the 25W incandescent bulb, it is hard to notice much difference. The LED bulb cannot be dimmed, but I have on order the dimmable 7W version.
The cost is quite high at £25 for the 5W and $30 for the 7W. But they are supposed to last 25 years at least. Now that I am satisfied that LED lights do exist that can compete with standard bulbs I hope to use them more and more around the house.

That's interesting Stan. I've been trying Halogen lights recently and I'm very happy with them, the one LED clear bulb I tried was poor, however, I've also tried the Enviro MR16 lights and I rate those....I'll check out the new Philips bulbs, thanks!

I found a PDF file on them HERE (http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-files/Environment/documents/2009/09/09/philipsleds.pdf) that is very helpful. I bought the 5W Econic bulb from John Lewis by the way. Make sure it says Econic on the box! There are all sorts of other versions, which are no where as good.

I have been using LED lights for about a year. The colour temperature is all important as most give out a blue light that is good for nothing. I moved over to them because they last for years and I got fed up with replacing GU10's.
The Philip ones are too dear at the moment but others will follow at better prices.

I looked at he cost of the bulbs and it works out at £1 per year over twenty five years. The technology they use is the Luxeon LED, which is a company that they own and also the market leader in high output LEDs. So it will be a while yet before the Chinese made high output copies can compete.
