ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response)

Does anyone on here experience this phenomena ?

I've tried a few vids on You Tube and some do seem to do something for me...:mental:

If you mean the whispering and crackling plastic wrappings into a microphone then I get their appeal (it's part of loving sound rather than just music).

But the AMSR bit is just some people on a forum coming up with a made-up term to make something sound like a "thing", a scientific "thing" whereas in reality it's just nothing more than it being unusual to most people and so they kind of wince and tingle at these funny sounds they normally don't ALLOW in their ears.

It's like if you think there's a spider in your ear or something and it's just a bit of hair ...or even nothing but you freak out at the mere idea.

Calling it AMSR also makes people coming to those videos to "try to experience AMSR" more exposed to some kind of expectation bias.


But as purely sonic things, they're quite good and interesting. Wish people would pay more attention to sounds around them in everyday life. When I've crunched wrapping at people's ears to show them what a nice sound it makes... most people think you're being wierd or jump out the way due to mistrust (like the spider analogy).

Best on headphones! There are whole genres of errr.... music? in the same vein, sound recordings of close-up things, using contact microphones and such. "Field recording is too much of a general term and is mostly soundscapes but does encompas such things as scraping pebbles on a beach, close-up sounds of onions frying until the mic gets destroyed in the heat etc etc It's all good stuff.

I quite like that, however I think anything considered to be ASMR inducing is probably a bit more relaxing... one of the strangest ASMR vids I've seen is the dog massage one, here

That's not really ASMR is it? It's just whispering ... but the relaxed dog visuals bit is lovely.

Ha. I've been subscribed to her site for a while now, I find some of it very soothing. It probably helps that she is young and female! :)
