Any suggestions for tweaking this fully automatic Techie. Can anything be done ?

(1) Replace stylus
(2) Clean cartridge pins and output plugs with Kontak or similar
(3) Tighten screws in plug and check lead connections are secure

And I'm afraid to say, that's about as far as I'd go!

Fair enough. At least this way, the owner won´t be wasting his time.
Cheers

Take care with isolation too. With a decent example of cartridge (T4P?), the sound ain't that bad as I remember..

Cheers. I can get him a NOS Audio Technica T4P MC (T-812, I think ) at a reasonable price - will the arm be up to it ?
What is considered a good way to isolate a Techie - a wall shelf ? Mass or lightweight ?
I can also lend him a spiked Ikea Lack I butchered years ago. Is it likely to do owt with a Technics DD ?

Any T4-P cartridge will have to track at 1.25 grammes as standard, so any of the better ones still available will be fine IMO. There used to be some good ones and even the Technics models weren't bad at the time, as long as you didn't use "pattern" styli. As originals aren't available, I suspect Jico would be fine (as well as the AT cartridge you suggest).

A Lack table should be good as it's strong, yet light in weight. A butchers-block chopping board sitting on squash-balls cut in half (or a set of fancy sorbothane thingies) would also be fine IMO..
