Thanks for that .. an interesting and somewhat amusing tale.
Back in MY formative foraging into the world of Audio. (Mid 60's :-)
It was generally accepted/understood by the Audio Weenies of the day:
that a Record would ..audibly..deteriorate by and around it's 8th playback.
Something that was easily proven / apparent in one's own home system... with little ambiguity.

The subsequent Brochure Babbles of CD was "Perfect Sound Forever" addressing the LP wearout issue directly.
Yet no one talks about this .. Ever.. these days.

Wow Grant, that's some read!!! saved it when I can take it all in :lol: :lol: Interesting about stylus life - 800 to 1000 hrs if you take the top end figure and play an average of 3hrs per day then (if I've got it right!!!) my stylus should last me 10yrs :) :) Also I suppose these figures apply to the technology of the era when the booklet was published - so will the newer technology last longer ??

I think if set up properly it should last somewhere approaching that Graham, but in yea olden days of poorly adjusted carts and tone arms, sometimes with a shilling on top it is not surprising that Danilo's quote of 8 plays would start to do both the record and the stylus damage. It should also be remembered that badly worn recoeds in your collection could rapidly reduce the life of your stylus too. Its a 2 way street I think.

? :scratch: 1,000 hours at 3 hours a day is 333 days or almost a year, not 10 years.

more like 3/4 hrs a week I think would last about 5/6 years, which is about my average these days

I've never worn a stylus out. My old Technics EPC-305MC was in regular use for well over twenty years and the diamond tip still looked perfect under the microscope.

What I love is the reinforcement the article provides to those that realise that keeping a record clean is important, not just for less noise when playing but up to 60% longer stylus and record life. Wow! It gives me the shudders thinking of a nice SAS tip ploughing through a groove full of debris.

I'm a bit of a 'born again' in this regard as I remember my very early days of a quick wipe with a dirty rag or even the occasional 'dust bug' use when I could be bothered. Luckily I've never been a smoker so no tar to wash off my old vinyl but the odd slurp of beer has now been well and truly removed.:eek:
