Having seen the photos of the innards and spoken to Anthony about it this appears to be top notch equipment and much the same as you would receive from myself if you ordered a similar custom made valve amp... I'm saddened to see this affect Mr Woods reputation when in fact it was only a dud valve all along :eek:

I've lifted the amp in question (from the floor up onto Anthony's racks, as the poor old chap's getting on now too, lol), and it's a bit heavier than my copper amp, at 40kg, so I'd say approx 45kg. However, I'm quite a strong guy, so in normal circumstances, and to be safe and prevent any injuries, it would be a two-man lift.
That's one of the reasons, however, why it sounds so superb, as you can pretty accurately judge how good a valve amp is by the amount of iron used in its transformers! :)
Oh, yes, the funds raised will be going to Cancer Research UK.
Unless whoever wins the amp pays cash on collection, in which case Anthony will have the funds to forward to his local Cancer Research UK shop, the payment will be going to me either via Paypal GIFT or BACS, so once I've donated the funds to CR (UK), I'll request an official receipt, and post a picture of it here (and on the auction page itself), as proof of payment.
So folks, let's dig DEEP into our pockets and raise as much money as we possibly can for this very deserving cause. It will be a lovely (and very unexpected) Christmas present for me to take along to my local shop! :cool:

That's a shame, Jerry, but I do understand.
Having been to your gaff, from what I can remember, you usually house amps low down on your main rack, in between your speakers.
Realistically, you could probably lift a side of the amp at a time and manoeuvre it into position, but you'd have to factor in the journey from where you park your car, to your listening room - and that would almost certainly require a two-man lift (or one woman and a man, if your good lady could help, by grabbing an end, as it were)?
Anyway, it's up to you :)

Lol - I don't think so, daftee. I've often lifted my Copper amp (which I know is 40kg, as it's been properly weighed), up and down from 18-levels of Mana, not to mention down the stairs and into the car and back whenever it's being taken anywhere - and which I did only a few weeks ago, as Anthony will confirm, as the amp was down at his place was getting some work done on it :)
It was probably Anthony going on about how heavy it was (lol) when I was at his place, and I just went along with it, even though I didn't struggle at all lifting it from the floor up on top of his racks. In all honesty, I don't feel any different now to how I did when I was 30. I'm still capable of doing the same types of things.
Anyway, regardless, it's a very well-made amp with some seriously good traffos in it, and the auction winner will be in for a treat - of that there is no doubt! :cool:

It's one of these perception things and how humans respond to colour.

Similar to how people thought time went in a red lit room, time was overestimated, but in a green lit room it was underestimated, which was another experiment along the lines of the box one which compared black boxes to green ones.
Workers complained black boxes were too heavy, over the weekend they were changed to green of exactly same size and weight and the workers reported the new boxes to be lighter.
The one I can't fathom though is how come size 9 white shoes look larger than size 9 black ones yet on certain websites black .............[emoji15]

It's an integrated amp with 3 inputs and a volume control.
No remote.
Comes all valved up and biases set etc, put the valves in and it's plug & play.

I've heard it, and I can state that you'd love it. It has similar 'balls' to the Copper amp, and other similarities in its presentation. Although it's an integrated amp, you can also connect a preamp to it... Bet your NVA passive would sound fab at the front :)

It was since it arrived not working properly and the maker did not want to put it right. Owner got fed up and has decided to auction it for charity. Anthony TD has checked it over and the problem was just a dodgy valve, all fixed, so now it is up for auction, proceeds to Cancer Research.

Oh, just one other thing folks, the amount raised for the amp can (if desired and applicable) be Gift Aided, which means that the government would give Cancer Research UK another 25% of the total amount raised. Therefore, if the amp goes for £1000, CR UK would get a further £250 on top! :eek: :)

People think 20 Watts is enough for Es. But when I dumped my 80 Watt 211s on some expensive Es, I just couldn't believe it. It literally blew them wide open and totally woke them up. Therefore, I can see the JW working really well on them.

The last thing you want, as a serious bidder (even if the money is going to charity), is to get involved too heavily, or even at all, in the early stages of an auction, thus simply putting up the price.... So look out for some last-second sniping from said 'silent minority'!! ;)

AnthonyTD told me that. Personally I haven't a clue. But I know that Anthony now has full confidence in the amp, as he told me that, too. :thumbsup:
Yup, but what it really needs, and I would advise the winner to buy for it (as Anthony will also confirm) is a nice new set of KT120s! :)
If it were me, on collecting the amp, I would buy a set from Anthony (as he carries a small stock) and get him to fit (and bias the amp accordingly) for KT120s, and retain the 6550s as spares. The amp 'as is' sounds great with 6550s, as I've heard it, but it really deserves a set of KT120s. That would thus allow it to reveal its FULL sonic potential, which trust me, is considerable!

I know it's a nightmare maybe I should have a word with Peter about it.... I've met him and he's an eccentric guy, very nice though!

They are irrelevant apart from to the very minor minority. That's all I'll say esp. if PQ is looking! Which I doubt.

I once had about 25k worth of AN stuff in my front room to 'test' but fortunately I got real and sent it all back... it was very good though... :mental:

BTW if you want to know about said amps, Bev, they are reviewed in the current issue of Hi-Fi Critic. I've not read it but I guess I don't need to:)

Ok, Guys, Al has now paid in full for the amp, and Geoffrey (Eagle owl) has been reimbursed, as he requested, for the £43.21 shipping costs he incurred, originally having the amp sent to him from John Wood.
Therefore, initially the amount remaining to be donated to Cancer Research UK was £856.79. However, I've topped that back up to the full £900, as it's for a good cause, and one close to my heart. The receipt for the final £900 donation is shown below:

The staff there were absolutely delighted to receive it!! :)

Many thanks again, first of all to Geoffrey for very generously allowing the amp to be auctioned for charity, and for Al making such a generous (winning) bid of £900. A very worthwhile and combined charitable gesture from the AoS community to a very good cause :clap:

And after seeing the images if the internals and reading Anthony ( Tube Distinctions ) report earlier in this thread saying how good the amp is and the quality of the components used this it what decided my purchase , Also about 2 years ago I listened 2 a hi fi system that included a John Wood amp and was impressed , I only went 2 this person 2 but a TT ended up staying for hours selecting music from his stock and sitting listening chatting ( HiFi) and drinking coffee :)

I looked back at the original thread where this amp's trials and tribulations were aired. Does anyone know what John Wood is up to now? Regardless of what happened with this, the conclusion was he did seem to make very good valve amps at a very reasonable cost (if collected).
I spoke with John a few months ago, he is still in business and despite the bailiffs alleged apparent inability to contact him on behalf of the original owner, it took me all of five minutes to get in touch. A lesson to be learned is if you are dealing with one man band, bespoke manufactureres, is factor in either collection or delivery and set up costs.
