FS: MINT Croft Micro Basic preamp & a few other bits

So why sell the Croft preamp? Well I've lusted after one of the bigger Croft amps for ages and this year I managed to bag a Epoch. Please bear in mind that I'd happily keep the Micro Basic but the box count needs to go down and I need funds for some new upgrades to the Epoch. The Micro Basic has for some time easily ousted my old Radford preamp and remained my Valve preamp of choice for nearly a year. The Croft mated extremely well with my Radford power amp and I passed many a night listening to jazz records, relaxing and drinking single malt! The MM stage is probably one of the best I've heard, I would say that it easily beats the £600+ optional extra MM stage on my ATC SCA2 preamp. Your actually getting a bloody good MM PHONOSTAGE and a free preamp when you buy the micro basic! This example is MINT, see the pics. I'll include a kettle lead. The microbasic is the perfect preamp if you fancy learning or trying the age old art of TUBE ROLLING. I'll through in a couple of JJ ECC82's which sound extremely good. I preferred the MULLARD ECC82's, but at £55 a pop can be quite expensive, to my ears they are probably the best sounding ECC82's you'll hear. I'm prepared to include a pair for an additional £80.

This example is completely mint and has been changed in no way shape or form. Glenn Croft will quite happily upgrade this if you so wish.

I'm communicating with Andrew due to a loud popping and crackling noise when changing volume. I assume it's either the volume pot or a valve. It's on the right channel and happens on both the cd/line in and phono. He therefore suggested I post on the forum to see if anyone has any ideas before I go about ordering replacement valve(s). I was going to post a video but I only have my iPhone and I'm not sure it's compatible with the file type, I would be grateful for any advice. But it's pretty simple, a very loud crackly popping noise at a level which would worry anyone about their tweeters blowing, when turning the volume knob up or down, especially near to zero. Should I start a new thread elsewhere on the forum instead? I don't spend much time on the forums so I'm not too familiar with what to do.

Congratulations on your new Croft pre. I too had an issue with my Epoch when it arrived with me - it had a loud earth-type hum through the speakers. It turned out to be a valve that had lost its vacuum in transit to me - looked opaque. So, obvious question - are all your valves in place and intact?

Thanks for your response David yes I checked and they are all nicely in place without any microphonic effects. The amp is nice and silent otherwise. Andrew has offered me a refund but we agreed, as the amp sounds so good, that we would try to get it working properly first. New valves was our first port of call.

Incidentally I may not have introduced myself I will look for an area to do so, and put my motley collection of equipment in my signature!

Hi Lawrence, usually a crackling noise from the movement of a volume control can be cured by using a switch cleaner fluid.

There are a couple of rectangular holes in the side of the ALPS blue potentiometer that is fitted to your Croft that will allow switch cleaner to be sprayed in.
