Audio Note Oto Enough To Drive 89dB Speakers?

You know how it is.... buying Christmas presents for everyone you feel that you should treat yourself as well :doh:

Well I've got something in mind for myself, another set of speakers... however they are only 'reasonably' sensitive at about 89dB. Can anyone throw any light on whether my Oto would drive them ok? The Oto gives about 10w..

Probably of more importance than the sensitivity is how reactive a load the speakers are. What speakers do you have in mind?

I have a set of Rega RS3's in mind... I am led to believe that most Rega speakers are fairly easy to drive but what do I know ? ;)

Yes, should be a fairly resistive load. I suppose it would unlimately depend on how loud you like to listen..

Quite musical Rega speakers, but a can be bit 'bright and breezy'. Not usually the last word in refinement, but fun.

A touch more refinement and higher sensitivity. Vibrant sounding speakers Triangles. Nice!

My own experience with pairing lots of amps with lots of speakers is that, often enough, you never can predict what will work.

My own current speakers are incredibly easy to drive despite being 4 way, 6 driver designs. A 10wpc el84 amp is all they need despite an 84dB sensitivity. But that amp couldn't make much headway driving a more efficient pair of 3-ways that came a-visiting a couple of days ago.

Suck it and see. Buy at a sensible price so you can move 'em on again - but you knew that already. ;)

Found out the RS3's are 6 ohms so I am hoping that my Oto could still drive them ok

The Oto has two speakers outputs one 4 ohms and one 8 ohms... I guess I could use either as both are 2 ohms away from 6.. :)

Well this is an RS3. Takes a person to drive it. Not an amp! :D

Well my new 'toy's' are sounding just fine

Initially I did not like them but I put that down to them being new and a bit 'tight'

They certainly have a VERY musical sound to them

They are growing on me every time I listen to them, and they are playing right now and sounding very good indeed... so at low volumes they also sound very good which is important to me as I sometimes listen late into the night and don't want to upset the neighbours...

Are they speaker heaven? I don't know yet to be honest... but I like what I hear so far... they are certainly the most 'foot tapping' sound I have heard so far speaker wise.... ;)

I also should not have worried about the Oto driving these speakers as the Audio Note seems very happy indeed with the RS3's...

In fact the only speaker that I have tried the Audio Note with that it wasn't quite happy with is the LS 3/5a's which is probably not surprising due to the insensitivity of them and maybe also the relatively complicated crossover these speakers use..

I am also wondering what they would sound like with some form of Rega amp..... I have never heard a Rega amp but the Elex-R and Elicit-R sound good from the reviews... maybe I should try one

Anyone throw any light on either of those Rega amps ?
