Solavox Speakers

Hi.

Does anyone remember Solavox speakers?

I've recently found the original manual for some my parents had in the 70's together with a top of the line Trio hifi set up... I was way to young to appreciate it but I remember it sounding great until I pushed the cone centers in... I thought they were buttons... :doh: lol - oops!

They looked pretty cool I must admit... I wonder what they are like these days?

They were a Comet special and yes I remember them... never actually heard them though.

Solavox were not really regarded as 'mainline' Hi-Fi back in the seventies. They weren't bad speakers, but tended to get sold in local electrical retailers as optional extras for radiograms and the like. One or two cheaper shops in Edgware Road stocked them occasionally if I recall. I believe they used a combination of drive units from EMI and some Danish units early on and went to Wharfedale for OEM drivers later.

Yes. Jez is right. Later in the seventies and maybe into the early eighties they became a 'resident' brand at Comet.

Think I may still have some info on the earlier models somewhere.

Gawd, there's a blast from the past!

Had a couple of sets back in the Day, picked them up from Comet.
Think I ran them with Qed 79 into an Amstrad receiver. :)

Remember a mate suggested rubbing boot polish into the cones and varnishing them afterwards.
Stiffens the cones...felt all hifi expert at the time haha.

I had a pair of PR 25s which had an 8" bass/mid and cone tweeter. And as Geoff says, for the money they weren't bad. I replaced them with a pair of Castle Richmond IIs, which did sound better and gave them to my sister with a Garrard SP 25 MK IV and Ferguson tuner/amp, all of which came from Comet. The Ferguson was made for the Scandinavian market and looked pretty neat, and didn't sound too bad.

Still have my set that came from Comet in Dundee along with a Sansui AU2200 amplifier ( no longer have it ) and Garrard Sp25 TT ( also gone )

I bought a pair many years ago from a car boot sale, reasoning that as they were cheap and looked a bit like small Leak 2060s, they might be worth a punt.

They weren't - they were crap.

Think that there were two names Solavox and Solarvox. I do remember the ones from Comet.

I remember them as 'pretty grim' speakers.
There were quite a few around in addition to Solarvox.
I did once read a lukewarm mini-review in HFN by Paul Messenger.

He commented that they could probably be improved with a Audax tweeter.
He later apologised when he found out they had Audax tweeters !

Probably best forgotten...
