View Full Version : Which 1210 to go for?
Hi,
I fancy trying a 1210, I'm not sure which one is the best Mark to go for, or does it really matter? Or am I better spending some cash on a new cart for my JVC QL-Y5F which currently has a Goldring 1012GX fitted.

MK2, cheap cheerful. It has less bling and a less crap in the PCB circuitry. Just sayin...

Nothing wrong with the Techie. The Mk.2 is just fine, I've had a couple. The sky's the limit for 'upgrades'.
You could look for one of these instead though.

It's a lot heftier than the SL-1210 and comes with an SME arm mount cut-out as standard, so with a bit of thought, you can mount just about any arm on it. Sounds superb!

Better paint finish, Led Target Light (will last longer than incandescent), better internal tonearm wiring (less capacitance).
It depends on what you are going to do with it.
If you are going to replace the PSU, arm, bearing and feet etc. any model from a Mk.2 onwards.

Yes ! I love my MK5g, unfortunately they can get pricey since Panasonic announced they had stopped producing the 1200/10. That said, patience and a bit of luck and you can bag one on da Bay for not daft money.

Thanks for the input, I just fancied trying one, not sure if I would upgrade all the parts mentioned, I suppose I'd be as well with something already at that standard lol.
My Gyrodec was great but I had to sell it to pay a rather large car repair bill, but can now afford something nice again, nought wrong with my JVC but it was only ever bought to tide me over until I could afford better.

I see the best deals here locally on the M3D. DJs don't like it as well because the pitch sliders aren't as nice so they tend to go for a bit less. It really doesn't matter one way or another to us since we mod the hell out of it anyway.

well I've only gone and done it, a nice minty mint Mk5 on it's way to me on Monday or Tuesday.
Can't wait, Hopefully be better than the JVC I currently use, but won't matter I bought it as much for the look of the deck as much as anything else. A couple of nice extras on it too ;)

It has just been delivered to my dad's and he's very kindly dropped it off at my work.
Will get it set up tonight and maybe get a listen once I've been to A&E - wife doesn't know I've bought it lol, she was asking why my JVC TT had been moved :)

My rock music has it's balls back - big time !!
Sounds much meatier than my JVC/Goldring 1012GX combo, although I think that's more to do with the cartridge to be honest.
The 1210 is absolutely mint, with only a few light marks on the lid, but the deck itself looks as new, it also came with the manual, an Origin Live Mat and an Ortofon 2M Blue with less than 20 hours use so I figure that will only improve.
Lid doesn't have hinges for some reason, it just sits on the deck with little rubber pads to protect the deck, it is a genuine Technics one though.
My JVC will be up for sale, pretty soon, although it did cross my mind to keep it for my grandkids as they are both music daft but only 11 and 7 years old at present so maybe vinyl playback is a wee while a away yet lol.

Although I do think the 1012gx I was using in the JVC is maybe a little tired which wouldn't help it's cause.
I'm really chuffed with the Techie, I think I paid a pretty good price for it considering the condition and the extras.
I hear they're fairly tweakable too ;)

it is, mind you not perfect there are one or 2 minor marks but for the price I paid I'm delighted with both the condition AND how it sounds, it is missing the 45rpm adapter so will add that at some point just to make it complete. It doesn't have hinges either so have to just lift the lid off, but I don't mind that either as I would use it without lid anyway.
I have to say Steve at HiFi Hangar who I bought it from was brilliant to deal with, he phoned me Thursday teatime as I had left a message earlier in the day and gave me a great deal and said he would get it sent via UPS next morning, it arrived at about 10am on Monday morning in a huge box, filled with bubble wrap and the TT itself was superbly protected with all parts wrapped individually, the cartridge has supposedly less than 20 hours on it ( although I've added another 5 already lol ).
I have no hesitation in recommending Steve to anyone else who wants to buy any of his gear, the 1210 I bought was exactly as described.

Great pics but it's not a 'MK5G', the '5G' has the silver flecked gloss black finish and the adjustable pitch range but I'm sure you knew that anyway.
I actually think this version looks more 'purposeful and really like the look of it.

Guys a quick question whilst the technics gurus are mostly all in one place, what's the difference between the MK5, MK5G & MK6

MK5 - greater range of anti-stake adjustment compared to the mk2 and the lid is held in place with magnets
M5G - special edition with high gloss finish with metal flakes, special digital pitch slider than can switch between 8% and 16% range, fancy blue cue light, hinged lid, tonearm has a fancy finish and OFC wiring and the body has improved damping
MK6 - is basically the M5G without the fancy finished plinth, arm or the fancy pitch slider but keeps the OFC wiring and damping improvements.

My MK5G I had didn't have a hinged lid or magnets. It just sat there.
