OOPS 2 - and other fads

My post was lost in Grants thread about Scottish traffic problems

But it jogged my memory for a fad I tried back in the 80's. Does anyone else remember OOPS?

Yeah for sure that one. I so nearly did too. I bought the magazines, new the truth, planned to get an LP12 (Ittok, Asak) - and any old tin can amplifier with a transitor radio speaker. The whole "record player" was too expensive (I was a student). Introducing the LV-V arm made buying an LP12 just possible. I was planning to do it, when my electret headphones failed and I had to shopping for new electrostatic headphones. I went to try them in a small retailer in Sidcup, and listened to Beyer electrostatics - with a source which was Pink Triangle 1, Syrinx PU2 Dynavector karat. And I was gob-smacked! (I still hadn't actually heard an LP12 at that stage). So I looked for a chance to compare the 2 turntables. Orpington HiFi was the only one I could find. Head to Head - the rest is history.

OOPS though was a loony idea for amplifier power supply maximisation. I think it stood for "Opposite Out of Phase Signal" wiring. You wired one channel out of phase throughout - so it was wrong at the cartridge, and wrong at the speaker - the idea being that big bass transients drew less from the power supply, or something like that :scratch:
