Interesting Quad 405 clone amp designs

Trouble with these kits is that the power supplies are always pretty light weight, with poorly designed and mediocre parts.

You also lose the classic vintage design look.

... I think the DIY appearance is a distinct improvement on the Quad original, personally!

LJM makes some very nice boards with his own designs (google ljm) which are probably better than the 405 clones sonically. i have a pair of L15D boards with a good psu which i find as good if not better than my modded 306. I guess it would be worth a try if the price is ok ? :)

I personally don't like the idea of crimped connectors on the speaker outputs.

A pair of wire cutters and some solder should sort that and the original Quad wiring wasn't exactly 'audiophile'.

The power supplies are a valid point though as the original has a vast transformer at its heart.

A fully modified NET audio 405-2 is a very nice thing to own and considerably better than a stock 405. I'd go down the route of sourcing and upgrading a 405-2 via dada electronics or net audio, these guys know these amps inside out. I went down the NET audio route because a found a unit in the UK and didn't fancy the hassle of sending a sourced amp to Europe.

Those Chinese boards have been around for quite some time. They are loosely based on the original 405 but built with cheep components, hence they don’t sound very good and reliability is also an issue. I would give them a wide berth. If you want a Quad buy a Quad
