WTB - 'Old style' hifi system --- advice needed

I am out of my comfort/knowledge zone so need advice ...... a mate is looking to buy a 70/80's shiny hifi to use in his garage showroom -- he is opening a VW camper specialist centre and so the look is important to go with the whole image.
Ideally he wants - decent amp, analogue tuner, a tape deck (!) and in a nod to modernity a CD player.
I have suggested he go with period amp, tuner and tape and buy a cheap modern CDP ( and hide it if needs be )

He wants to relive youth and so prefers brushed chrome and lots of meters if possible..... it doesnt need to be mint as then I'm guessing its silly money

Budget is not settled yet but if £350/400 were available for the amp/analogue tuner/tape deck ----- would this be a realistic ? and it goes without saying if you have something for sale feel free to contact me ...... I can source a CDP and I have in mind a pair of B&O DM4 speakers or similar to complete the 'look' .... all advice welcome ( prefer to avoid slagging match between SONY and PIONEER buffs etc should it exist !! )

Some things to bear in mind:

1) old tape decks and tuners (with the odd exception) are not worth anything more than the postage
2) Some of those old amplifiers do not have much power output and will struggle to fill a large room (unless through very efficient speakers) without clipping.

otherwise sounds like a great idea and I look forward to seeing the finished set up.

Excellent as they are, I doubt a pair of DM4's are going to be much use in a place big enough to be a VW camper van showroom..... for anything more than background music anyway!

I see Macca has replied along the same lines whilst I was typing.... Yeah amp power needs to be adequate also of course. There are plenty of old Jap amps and receivers with 60, 80 and 100WPC but they tend to be the more upmarket models.
Maybe some Wharfdale E70's or some of the less desirable (cheaper) Tannoy models for speakers? Bose could be an option as well (901's or 601's).

I like the look of this, from what others are saying maybe not powerful enough but I would have thought the sound would be played as background music in a showroom. I've been in garage workshops with maybe 3 bays and the guys are listening to a portable radio (not saying it sounded great) so I would have thought something like this would be ok for background levels.

thanks for this -- and for other suggestions ---- and I agree my understanding is that it is to play as background and maybe slightly higher at times but not as a PA party system ( i will confirm ) ... this looks like the type of thing I am imagining - on his behalf -- the NYTech is a left field one --- I first thought it was pig ugly but its growing on me -- not sure it would work with a CDP but it has its charms -- but I've read up on it and seems well thought of and I'm educated about it if ntg else ----- appreciate thoughts and feel free to keep them coming ---- I am going to press for a firm budget --- cheers, chris

i have a nice pair of mordaunt short DM3s I got hold of a couple of months back.
all the drivers work correctly and the cabs are virtually unmarked.
going cheap...PM me if you could use them.

They could be good if you are talking about B&W DM3s (MS didn't make them). They'll go quite loud and sound pretty good.

From around 1971, you don't see many Rotel RA-610 amps, but they're well made and have a surprisingly solid sounding 30 watts per channel. Just right for the B&Ws.

I reckon you had the MS400 on your mind. They are fairly similar. I've mixed up the two in the past.
