Purchase one of these recently but sadly to find out that the volume switch has been messed with - the part that triggers the clicking on/off has been removed and the switch is now hardwired to be constantly in the ON position, volume control is also a bit messy as it is.

Was wondering if there's anyone with a donor unit who can provide this switch as the one I've purchased is basically in mint condition, it would be a shame if I couldn't keep it in my collection. :(

Thanks

Unfortunately it is the mechanical part of the switch that usually fails first.

What resistance value is the volume control, as others may have a suitable replacement even if it isn't originally from a Leak.
Look on the side of the volume control to see what markings there are.

Hi Alan, thanks for the input, I'm currently at work so I'm not near the equipment but looking at the service manual it's a 20K potentiometer.

This is a photo of it's current condition with the original wires tagged to each other:

Here's a original one, where you can see the missing rear black box of the volume potentiometer, the on/off switch I presume:

Perhaps get a complete amp off eBay for spares. Don't think that they go for much.

Been looking at prices lately, waiting for the right one as postage makes it a bit silly for me to buy it only for a potentiometer. Last resort action, but a valid one indeed, thanks Alex!

Says linear, surely log needed for volume control

Oops! Didn't spot that. Sorry.

Strange thing is that they call it a volume control, it may still be right, who knows.

Cricklewood Electronics may be worth trying.

Yeah, those kind of doubts also assaulted my mind hence the search for a original one where I can take my soldering iron and go like for like. Thanks for that though..

The Quad 33 uses a volume control with a combined switch, not sure what the value is though. Perhaps check those out.

Yes they do - and there's one for sale here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volume-control-potentiometer-pot-switch-for-Quad-33-preamp-pre-amp-preamplifier-/131515983470?hash=item1e9ef6a66e:g:pWsAAOSwPhdVGP2 8.

The ad dosen't quote the value, but I have looked at the schematic for the Quad 33 and it's 50KOhm; so probably of no use for the Leak.

Yer, won't cut it.

Will make very little difference fitting a 50K in place of a 20K in the Leak circuit, I've just looked.
