View Full Version : New AOS title banner - Contributions required

The Black Adder

Hi all.

We are going to be updating the top title banner of AOS and we thought of asking you all to contribute some images for it.

We have certain categories that would like your help if possible. We already have some ideas for some of these but please put your images forward anyway as it's always good to have a selection.

If we can get some images that have been discussed and championed here on AOS that would be very good indeed.

Valve, Transistor, Modern & Vintage all welcome.

Catagories:

CD players
Streamers
Turntables
Speakers
Amplifiers
Pre-amplifiers
Cables
Tuners
Reel to Reel

Internal shots are also welcome.

There is one thing, the images must be of your own equipment and of a decent quality.

The mods will decide as a collective which ones will go forward in to the new banner.

The new banner will go live as soon as we have a winning selection. :)

So, let's see what we can collate between us all.

Many thanks
Jo

Yup, chaps, let's get some good images together. Now's the chance for your gear to become famous, as part of the new AoS banner! :D

Either post them here or PM your pics to Jo. Cheers

Marco.

Thanks, Jerry. All good stuff. Decent quality images too. :)

Remember if there is anything you guys have that has been championed through AOS that would be great.

Did you take that MBL pic Jerry, that's belting :)?

Nah, I take a decent pic but not that good. ;)

I got it via Google Images. :)

The Black Adder
18-11-2015, 09:57
Ah... shame. I'll look in to this but not sure we can use it then.

We really need the images to be of your own kit guys unless you have permission to use them.

jandl100
18-11-2015, 09:58
Ah, OK - shall I delete images that I didn't take myself?

The Black Adder
18-11-2015, 10:02
Yes please, Jerry if you could... :) - Sorry I forgot to put that in my initial post.

Marco
18-11-2015, 10:18
Yes, would love to see a 'Jerry special' of his own MBLs. which if good enough, will DEFO make it into the banner! :)

Here's one I just took ...

No, it's not as good as the pro one on Google Images.
But it's mine and not too bad, I think. :)

The Black Adder
18-11-2015, 10:24
that should be fine, Jerry... many thanks :)

OK - posts edited - all images are now my own. And AOS can use them.

Years old and a bit low res these days. Those RCA thoriated tungsten filaments don't half glow though. My fave pic from the absolute myriad I must have taken around the world. Luckily enough these things are still mine:)

Any chance of changing the default forum skin while you are at it? - The current colour reminds me of soiled babies nappies! Or even offer a few different options? At present, there is no choice over which skin you view the forum with. Even a nice clean white background would be preferable.

I like the 'Victorian Gentlemen's Club' tones of the current colours. And they differentiate this forum from the others, in their bright blues etc. Funnily enough it was one of the things that appealed to me when I joined.

A bit of PhotoShopping to blur round the edges of the item under consideration should sort that, I'd have thought.

I like the 'Victorian Gentlemen's Club' tones of the current colours. And they differentiate this forum from the others, in their bright blues etc. Funnily enough it was one of the things that appealed to me when I joined.

Spot on, Geoff. All of those (apart from perhaps the 'Gentleman's club' thing, although I like that) were deliberately done. I find 'acid' colours cold and rather hard on the eye (so 'rich' colours were preferred) - and most of all we wanted to be different!

I hate 'blue looking' forums with a passion, for that reason, and some just look too 'dispassionate and IT-derived'. We wanted the site to look arty and also convey a 'warm & cosy' feel, which reflects the close-knit community aspect of AoS, and the vibe we sought to create :)

But you could give users the option to use different skins/themes. If some people like soiled nappy brown then that's fine, but there are many themes available for vBulletin 'off the shelf' that would give variety.

Marco
20-11-2015, 15:12
Hi Graeme,

Well, if it's easy enough to implement as standard, via the forum software, then fine, but if said 'skins' have to be manually created and saved as 'available options', then that takes time, and time is unfortunately a precious commodity for those of us who lead busy lives, and for whom 'forum world' isn't the bee all and and all... ;)

If you wish to investigate this matter further, I suggest that you either send Nick (Beechwoods) a PM, outlining your request, or start a thread about it in Critic's Corner, where he will hopefully pick up on it when he gets a chance :)

Marco.

Some nice stuff again there, Paul :)

Guys, could I ask those of you who are into the AV side of things to take some nice pics of your AV gear, amps, TVs, that kind of thing? Because we're currently lacking images that will allow us to represent the AV Studio.

We could also do with some more pics of your DIY projects, to represent the DIY room. The whole purpose of the banner is to showcase the sheer diversity of equipment used and discussed here by our membership, and ensure that every room of the forum (excluding the off-topic section, apart from music related items) is represented by an appropriate image.

Cheers!

TV's aren't very photogenic as they are supposed to display a picture, not be the picture. Add to that it being shrunk down to go on a banner, do we really think A/V lovers are going to feel ignored without a picture of a big screen?

Lovely pics, Mike, so thanks for that. Always loved the look of Leben equipment, as it ticks all the right 'retro boxes' for me! :)

As such, I'm sure that one (or perhaps more) of those pics will find their way onto the banner. Remember too, everyone, that there is an 'upper' and 'lower' banner [header and footer], and we intend to alternate banners, and thus the images therein, so Mike, keep a look out soon in those areas and I'm sure you'll see your lovely Leben featured somewhere

If the Leben is typical of amps using pairs of EL84s, a bit of common sense and perhaps sympathy is needed when choosing speakers to use with it. There are only 12 watts per channel available, but they should be nice sounding ones. I've only ever heard one EL84 amp that wasn't very nice.

I'd suggest a pair of Linn Saras, but they're not rare. But it would be hard to think of a worse match. :D

I've heard a Leben amp a couple of times and it really wasn't my thing at all - unfortunately the styling is no more successful for me.

+1 I can't understand the fascination of the things at all!

But we're all different, eh! And the looks are certainly distinctive. :)

Can't comment on how they sound, as I haven't heard one in anger, but I love the looks. It's a retro thing! :)

New banner now live, folks - and with a Christmas theme, too! :santa: :carrot:

Hope you like it, and remember once more banners have been filled with suitable images, from those submitted, they'll be alternated with the existing top and bottom banners, just to keep things fresh :)

Thanks again to everyone who's contributed, and most importantly to Jo for all the work he's done with this project, and to Nick (Beechwoods) for implementing it!

Glad we're getting a new banner, even if it has white blotches all over it :)

I was going to suggest anything from the retro hifi girl friday postings here ... http://www.itishifi.com/
