View Full Version : Croft Epoch for sale ebay
Looks like good price for a nice Croft pre?

You should snap that up, Jim. It has the nicest casing Croft ever produced, and with a superb circuit, ripe for some subtle (but judicious) component tweaking!
That done, and at what should be a reasonable cost, the owner would have a truly world-class preamp...

I'm curious, what sort of tweaking are we talking about? (using my Noob free pass here.. :) )

I can fully concur with that. Someone here should BUY IT NOW!
I wish I could, but having just bought a new amp the timing is all wrong - unless I sell my Proprius monoblocks.
It looks in nice condition, but how much are we talking to modify it to get the best out of it?

You could have it updated without a seperate PSU for a couple of hundred by Glenn removing the big white caps and replacing the Jensens with some Mundorf TubeCaps or like mine, some Clarity Cap TC4's. You would need to ask Glenn for a price to confirm obviously.

What Kevin said - my finger is hovering over the buy it now button with serious intent, but this is beyond the top end of my budget, a stretch I'm willing to make, but not if I;ve got to invest lots more to get it up to scratch. Im particularly concerned about the Phono stage - IIRC that was a weakness of these pre's...

I don't think that update to the phono stage is a big job. So I wouldn't worry about that.
Don't think you need to get it all done at once either. I didn't with mine. Why not fire an email over to Glenn and ask him... best wat to find out.

I shouldn't be bothered too much by the "modding contingent" here on AOS - the first thing they do with a nice bit of kit is change it! :mental: - if that isn't your thing (it isn't mine, either) just buy and enjoy!
If I bought it, I would listen to it in standard form first.
You won't appreciate the upgrades otherwise. If the upgrades are recommended by Glen, then surely they must be worth doing?

Yes, of course. However, it depends on what you want: a nice 'vintage' preamp (in truth, it's not all that vintage, probably early to mid 2000 era), or a genuinely top-class preamp (like Jo's or mine), at a distinctly low-class price [even after modding], able to compete with the best - and I mean the BEST...
If it's the former, then leave it alone and enjoy it 'as is', if it's the latter, then carry out the mods Jo has outlined - simples! :)

Yup, correctomundo on both. Of course they're worth doing, otherwise Glenn wouldn't offer to do the work, if necessary! ;)
The fact is, these modifications are fully approved and supported by him. Anyone who's in the market for a potentially very special preamp would be an absolute numpty if they missed this.... GET YER WALLETS OUT, muchachos!

That's exactly how it should be done. However, the basic upgrades would be inexpensive and you get a full bill of health from Glenn to boot. Just take it easy and do the upgrades which Glenn suggests in time. Doing it like that, for me has made me cherish it even more.
All of the upgrades I've had done have been suggested/done by Glenn and each time it's been well worth it.

Yup, yup - upgrades are for those who like to keep their kit long term. Doesn't make sense for an addicted kit swapper like me - a lot of potential buyers won't touch modded kit, although Glen Croft's own work may be an exception to this.
Having said that, my speakers are here forever / until they break - and I wouldn't dream of having them modded!
I guess I'm just not a modder. :)
Indeed, as we discussed on another thread: there are different (and equally viable ways) of skinning a cat! ;)

I nearly bought this but I think I'd prefer to wait for the new Radford preamp.

Hmm, £650 to buy, then another £200 odd to modify - £850 for a pre doesn't seem such good value when the new Croft Phon integrated is £1000
Yes, but thus modded it will piss all over the latter! That's the whole point....
Honestly, if you do that, said Epoch will compete with £10k+ preamps. I know, because my modded Charisma does (with the exact same mods)! :)

Most preamps are £10+
Yesh, I forgot the 'K' - see my edit! :D
Marco.
I guessed that.
I wish someone would buy this though!

So, just to be clear then, you think I should buy it? :hmm:
Hi Barry,
Only if you're in the market for a top-notch preamp. If so, the Epoch is a belter! :)

Hi Barry.
The thing is, (I didn't see this before) it's already been updated to regulated spec so all that's needed now are a few tweeks to which Glenn will advise you on and don't forget, Barry, you have a wealth of experience here regarding which updates are best bang for your pound too.
So because it's already been updated to regulated, don't quote me on the £200 'initial upgrades', it might be cheaper than that. Of course, just send Glenn an email to confirm things.
All in all it's a wonderful thing to own, just take your time with it.
These don't come up very often now and are getting more difficult to get hold of. I would buy it myself but I have to spend the money elsewhere at the moment.:(
I agree with Marco and Jo this is truly a great preamp with massive potential and battleship build quality!
If someone buys my Proprius (now up for sale), I may treat myself.

That's a fair point actualy Josie - I didn;t clock that initially either. Hmmmm, decisions......
If it is someone on here that bought it, and doesn't like it, I will have it off them next month :)
Just didn't have the cash this month :/

It's a bit tricky if the wallet is empty, though. ;)
Barry must have something inside his, otherwise he wouldn't be considering it ;)
Swither ye not, Bazza! Honestly, if you land the Croft, you won't regret it! :trust:
Marco.
It's gone... :(

I'll have to eat my own words, I can always sell the Epoch if I don't get on with it. Truth be told, I re-read the ad and realised I was getting the amp pretty cheaply especially when I sell the Micro Basic. First round of mods has already been done! I'm going down the valve route now and I hope the Epoch will work well with the new Hashimoto HM7 based SUT and a few other little upgrades that I have planned.
Gotcha, Andy - makes sense :)
If you need any tips/info or any advice at all on how to get the most from your forthcoming mods, feel free anytime to pop me a PM. Good luck!

Apologies Barry, I hope I didn't offend you.
I am also glad you bought it, as I don't have to explain to the wife why another box has arrived for me. ;)
I hope you enjoy it. I'll keep a look out for it on the market again when you order the Radford.

That's ok! At least it looks like I'll be able to shift the croft on if I don't like it.
If the timing is right for me, it's always a possibility.
There is another Croft Charisma with a very special line stage possibly coming onto the market soon. I will give folk heads up but it will be double the price of the Epoch.

Spill the beans... it'll give me some ideas on how to mod my Epoch.
