Wow Bob, what an amazing life you must lead, nothing better to do than go on a forum on a Sunday morning and take the piss out of people enjoying a hobby. Or do do you live with someone who put a gun to your head and made you do it? What a numpty.

Frankly I am sick of this disrespectful attitude displayed all over audio forums.

What does this add to learning and understanding ? What does this add to folks getting more from their music collections ? What does this add to harmony and tolerance of varying opinions ? It adds nothing, zero, just stirs and creates bad feeling.

No Bob

It is you that are being rude. This is potentially offensive as it stirs and takes the piss out of folks who sit to the subjectavist side of things. Those who hear differences in cables etc. Frankly the use of the word placebo is something I personally dislike very intensely where smug objectavists piss all over valid listening experiences by inserting the placebo insult.

I have been accused of not having a sense of humour, not true I do, but in this I see a potential for flames not anything of light. I recall a few years ago a picture put up similar, but pandering to the stereotypical way men use gear and how women use gear, it ended in flames. The picture was of an amplifier with knobs and buttons labelled to reflect those stereotypes.

I see that picture as a piss take and insult to those who put listening first.

But if Paul and I are alone in thinking that, fair enough.

I am often taken aback on how sensitive some issues are in hifi... its sometimes like trying to discuss religion with certain people.

Another subject that generates rude remarks is the one about Ethernet / USB cables, DAC's and basically anything that was invented after the 1960's  ok maybe 1980's (edit) :stalks:

For me, this sort of thing highlights how we all interpret what we see in front of us differently - and much will depend on mood... When I saw it, I laughed, so that was my reaction.

However, given the amount of piss-taking on forums, in reference to 'foo' (a word I hate intensely), because unlike 'placebo effect', which is a recognised and accepted phenomenon (although not always applicable where it's used), it's a purely derogatory term coined by those who simply won't accept that not everything that people genuinely hear can currently be measured, I can also understand Paul and Neil's reaction, as many folks are fed up having their valid observations automatically, and thus rudely dismissed as 'imagined'.

However, the key question is: did Bob mean any malice by posting what he did? I sincerely suspect not, and just thought it was something funny to post, to lighten up a dull Sunday morning, which unfortunately was taken the wrong way.

I believe the purpose of a forum is not to massage egos but to instead challenge beliefs in order to that people can have a more informed opinion. As a scientist I have spent my entire life challenging and testing theories.

I’m never offended when people challenge my opinions. If my argument is strong I will provable. If not then I’m willing to change and am always ready to embrace new ideas. I tend to find that people who throw their toys out of the pram at the slightest challenge don’t have a good argument in the first place.

Precisely, not so much mine but just in general.

Whether Bob intended such or not is for me moot as the original creator more than likely was taking the piss. I can't imagine any other reason for creating such an image. I don't like the term foo either but it does fit some stuff out there. I have too often seen 'placebo' used in an insulting way, a way to silence and destroy folks valid listening based opinions.

I am not anti measurements, or science but I am against folks seeking to crush valid opinions by using words in an insulting way.

I want to know why folks can't hear stuff and others can, it fascinates me. I have never said - as far as I can recall - that folks who say they can't hear stuff are deluded, deaf etc. I accept they are not hearing what I might hear, or others hear, and I would like to know why that is. Complex subject but worthy of investigation.

I love that some people think their viewpoint is so precious that its above discussion and making fun of. No idea or concept is holy, not art, science or religion. If your beliefs are so weak that they think them unable to survive some humour maybe you should find better ones- or get some perspective in your life.

Maybe go out and do some charity work or something similar, that'll put your middle class hifi troubles into perspective.

Or maybe make some humorous images that mock the measurists in our midst.

Clark

The use of a laughing emoticon, in the context of the image posted actually - for me - does nothing to defuse the images potential to cause offence and stir up bad feeling. In this case its not been the image so much, but Paul's response and mine that has caused issues  :(

Bob has stated he mean't no harm - I accept that - but in my view his response to Paul showed rather two dimensional thinking re the possible outcome of posting this. Yes some will laugh, find it amusing, but others will find it to be what the image was originally intended to be an insult to those who hold views based on listening - which is my interpretation of the image. I took exception to the image.

There is an intolerance on many audio forums re those who express views on listening results, those who hear differences in contentious issues, interconnect/speaker cables, USB cables, CAT cables etc - fill in the blank - the usual stuff that brings the science and objectavist brigade out to insult, belittle, call delusional those who hear differences and express those. The word placebo is often used by those folks to try and paint hearers of differences as being fools easily deluded.

My views on this are strong and robust and I will defend them and others holding them, but I would prefer folks who can't hear differences to be more respectful, not use language in a way that is insulting and frankly they know full well that it is.

Paul's response was strong, too strong, but I understand it, and it was the gist of it that I supported not so much the too strong aspect, hence the + 1. However in my response I should have pulled him on that and I didn't - for that I am sorry.

Frankly I strongly dislike postings that in my view will kick off issues, for folks here and end up the same old same old way and on seeing that image that was my feeling, that it would cause some folks offence. Of course there are those who take the Frank Zappa view, poke everything, but I don't and I personally feel that some things are best tackled with tact and gently and that image doesn't.

My first forum was Zerogain, worst possible place for a subjectavist to go, I was attacked constantly and certain folks often used the 'placebo' word as an belittling insult and after being bullied relentlessly I eventually left and came here. I suppose my prickliness about this in part comes from that awful experience and also from my view that adults should be able to discuss things, and disagree without taking the piss and disrespecting peoples views and valid experiences.

So I am sorry if Bob felt I was also attacking him, but I wasn't my intention was just to call into question the wisdom of posting the image and I failed to do that in a way that played the ball, not the person posting. I see that by not pulling Paul that was the only interpretation folks could get. I allowed my personal offence of the image to get in the way of doing that aspect of being a mod, mod hat was off and it should not have been.

However the original intent though of the image, and I can't see it as anything other than an attack on folks who use listening as a basis for audio opinion, does not sit well with me or my personal sensibilities, and it does cause me a degree of offence and I don't think its funny. I accept others do, but I don't. Humour by pass, too tight, too serious...... take your pick, but that's how I see it.

Edit I now see a new image with new writing  Intent seems clear now to insult people who are offended by image one.

I was actually poking fun at myself a bit. Up until recently I firmly believed that FLAC or WAV was far superior to mp3. A colleague asked me if I could tell the difference in a blind test, up for a challenge I accepted. I was surprised to find that at the standard mp3 compression of 128 Kbit/s I was only about 90% accurate in identifying the difference but at a sample rate of 320 Kbit/s I was hard pushed to score above 60%. Perhaps it’s my age. Maybe Hi-Fy is only for young ears

What gets me is than anybody could take a hobby - and hobby it is not life and death, try Paris - so damned seriously as to take offense at some harmless banter.

I'm nearly 69 years old and still play with toy cars....no, no, they are model engineering and it takes years of dedication and practice to achieve the standard I have reached, I pride myself on my driving skills. I still expect to have the piss taken and of course, it is quite right as the idea of a grown man taking slot racing SERIOUSLY is as laughable as someone getting insulted by being told they are listening, or not listening, as the case may be, to a particular TT, Amp or bit of wire and hearing something different to others.

I accept that others just can't see what possible enjoyment there could be. If they want to laugh, that really is fine. In what way exactly does that affect me? I have more than enough ego to tell them to bogoff and do their own thing. I might even think they are nuts, deluded, cracked whatever, sometimes I will even feel like expressing that opinion. However, I don't expect that opinion to have any effect at all and it shouldn't.

Just do your own thing so long as it does no harm to others. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never harm me is an expression that could be usefully bought back into use.

Marco.

I see it this way too. Whether a listener hears something because it is a real effect or because it is down to placebo effect should be investigated by all those it really effects and how much the placebo possibility bothers the person spending the money. And on a forum like this, people are free to speculate for their own passing of free time and building of knowledge

People will wrongly say it's a placebo effect and sometimes a heard effect will really be a placebo... To take offence at an established and real effect is to take offence at life itself and with the human condition. Best answer to that is to read some philosophy.

Now, whether the photo is meant to be offensive is another matter.

Still, the photo doesn't make much sense given the context of the options on the dial! It looks like its saying all amplifiers sound the same whether they use valves, mosfets, class-D or whatever. That is just deaf objectivism to the extreme and likely a load of nonsense. And it's in the wrong sub-forum if that's the case! So a poorly made joke I'm afraid ClothEars - sit at the back of the class for not thinking it through.

Then it wouldn't be an emulation of different types of design at all..

It would be an effects box with types of filtering which sound nothing like the amps in question but instead just named as such.

I am suspicious that someone is taking this all rather seriously again rather something just done for a little light relief in these tedious times. If you analyse most humour to the nth degree it's going to fall down on logic somewhere.

Who give s stuff if his machine would work, not work, blow up if you switched it on or send you to paradise? It was funny. It was a joke. Try laughing.

Well.... look who's being grumpy now..

I'm just thinking out loud about the idea of a device, yes for my own entertainment! And people can join in with the verbal diarrhea if they want.

.... and analysing humour can be more funny than the humour itself, with the right people... err, not making any claims in this case though.

Nah. Permanent and irreversible.

Actually, I am feeling more at peace with the world than usual tonight as I'm just recovering from some crap 24 hour virus that gave me 100 degree temperature and made me feel like a soggy mess. I'm on the di-codiene which pushes the world a way a bit a leaves a slightly fuzzy rosy glow:drugs:

It's hard to avoid the conclusion that some avatars and usernames are stunningly appropriate. It's so long ago now I forget, but did we choose them, or were they allocated? :)

Hi Tim,

Just been busy playing music and gigging guys. Dropped off the radar from both my regular forums for awhile and had rather a lot on during the past year, so kind of got out of the habit. Being content just playing music I guess? I did buy a Techie 1210 mind you, but still yet to use it!

Well I think it's funny. Taking this hobby too seriously is a good way to lose all the enjoyment from it.

Indeed. Some people need to get a grip FFS, or, if using Decca cartridges, ffss.

Humour's a strange thing. If I tell a joke and one person laughs and another doesn't, does the laughing person have a good sense of humour, or is he/she just easily amused, or just being polite? Does the non-laughing person lack a sense of humour, or were they not listening properly, or was it just a crap joke?

I don't see how anyone can be offended by a picture of a mythical piece of hifi (there's plenty of real examples out there that are actually more offensive in terms of customer rip-off, or unscientific bullshit). And, closer to home, the long-running three words daily thread could well offend those who are offended by rude words, but I don't see anyone campaigning to have that thread locked and deleted.

So, all in all, a lot of fuss about nothing very much, to which of course I am adding.

a. all the music in the world via mp3 and ipod
b. 25 albums only on ANY system you devise

Well, a, obviously. It's weird to think that when I was a lad, i.e. before I got a job, our family LP collection numbered around 25 albums, and that seemed plenty, despite the fact that every LP was listened to countless times, to the point where you knew exactly where the needle was going to get stuck or jump a groove.

Humour is very simple. If I find it funny, it's funny.

The thing is, I know my 25 favourite albums off by heart; I can 'play' them in my head without needing to listen to them. So essentially I'd need to choose 25 that I know less well, and which might bore me to tears after a few listens. Plus of course on a desert island speaker placement would be a nightmare.

As would finding a plug socket. But if you did at least the mains supply would be pretty clean.

Back in 1992 when I bought my first CD player, I didn't have any CDs. The opposite was the case when I bought my first record, as we didn't have a record player!

Just noticed I never replied to this whilst doing some house keeping - well it did when I was discussing it's purchase with the seller, but it's never been out of it's box since I got it home! Doubt I will get it running for sometime now.
