I just bought this over on pfm as a little project. I already have a K4000 clone (95W EL34 power amp), and thought this would go with it.
Obviously I can't leave it unmolested, so I found this - http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1826/ which sets out a circuit mod. The only question is, which resistors to use? At a price I am prepared to pay, the contenders appear to be Kiwame 2W or Takman metal film, 0.5 and 1W. I have used both in the past, so unless someone gives me a compelling reason not to, I think I will go with the Kiwames (cheaper, higher wattage, physically larger).
As I had some RCA 8514 valves I stuck them in, in place of the EH 12AU7s, and there is an immediate improvement, especially the bass. Hopefully the circuit changes, with better resistors and output caps will lift it further.
Listening to it now, it isn't yet as open as my Promitheus TVC, which in turn isn't as good as my Stereo Coffee LDR (battery powered). I'm in the process of adding a remote control to that, but it seems there is a fault with the remote board; input 4 relay stays closed when 5 is selected. Bugger, more circuitry to check.
Getting better output caps into this will be tricky, as there isn't much space, but I'll have to see what I have that will shoehorn in.
