Sony PS-X70 turntable repair.

First off, I'm not confident I will pull this off, so if anyone can recommend someone who could repair my turntable, preferably in the North West region, I would appreciate ideas. I have a Sony PS-X70 fully automatic turntable. Unfortunately none of the automatic functions are working. The light on the arm lift/lower button is on permanently. From a video of a fully operational turntable I have seen, this should not be the case. Has anyone any suggestions as to what to look for if I delve inside? I will look at the switch itself if I can and also the various linkages for hard grease etc. Ideally I would like suggestions as to what might make the light stay on. Thanks in advance, Andy.

Have you tried the Vinyl Engine site? I'm refurbing a PS-X600 at the moment and it is a great source of manuals, advice etc.

Thanks for the suggestions Peter. To be honest I don't really want to risk sending it in the post. I have downloaded the service manual from Vinyl Engine. I had a look inside. I could not see anything obviously wrong. All the moving parts are free, I could turn the worm screw from the motor by hand and take the arm through its cycle. There is no hardened grease. I sprayed switch cleaner in all the switches. Still nothing happening though. I suspect the problem lies with the arm rise/lower switch which is stuck in the on position or at least the light next to it is on permanently. I have reached the limit of my abilities now, admittedly not very far! I did find an audio repair chap in Leigh called PR Audio, has anyone used him? Advice still welcome, thanks, Andy.

I had one of these TT's and had the EXACT problem you have. Its incredibly difficult to find anyone who will work on it as they are so old and the electronics are ridiculous. There is a guy in Bridgenorth who said he thought he could fix it. if you want his number let me know.

I never took mine. Got rid of it, for a good price.

You must have been sniffing too many solder fumes from all your interconnect making. It was me that bought it off you, as we've already discussed here! It's still away being repaired by the way.

Thanks Geoff. That's where it is now. He's working his way through it. I think I thanked you for suggesting him on my tone arm lift/ lower thread, but if not, thank you for the recommendation. Because of his working hours, and mine, I have not been able to meet him yet. I left my turntable with a kind chap in one of the other units. I can't wait to get it back and see it in full working action. Then I'll be pestering for suggestions for cartridges etc., etc......

I think I may have seen it in his workshop as I was talking to him about my TTS-8000. He showed me another Sony deck and was talking about how well it was made. He then said that the guy who owns it was very attached to it so I remarked that it must be one of my fellow geeks!
