View Full Version : Noob - Needs advice
Hello friends, I've come across an older model stereo system I would like to integrate into my (beginners) set-up. My main concern is the amp and want your input. The amp is a Sony model TA-AV531. (AC 120V 60Hz 250W) - is this an amplifier I'm going to like or one I'll want to replace in two months. Its coming with a disc changer and tuner (neither of which i care about) and a set of speakers. The speakers are 30/60w. Is this a set-up worth dropping a couple hundred bucks on or should I pass?

Give it a wide berth.
It makes a noise, but it's not HiFi.
What should I be looking for, Chris?

Look for an older dedicated stereo amp from maybe Denon or NAD for around $100 and you'll probably be happy enough. Big power outputs do not necessarily equal good sound quality. For stereo, avoid anything that hints at AV.
That amp is worth about thirty dollars tops. The tuner is worthless and the CD autochanger maybe $20 on a good day. In terms of sound quality you are not going to gain anything with that amp.
