Definition of Silence?

For my mind the open mike background roar that is broadcast as the 2 minutes silence for Remembrance day is utter pish.

I do specifically take to take time to honour the occasion and am thankful for our freedom. But ....it's not silence.

I buy a poppy...well i have a badge now but thats it... Never been into silences especially although i dont agree with folk deliberately trying to disrupt such things i believe the use of a period of silence or whatever is overused now.

ISTR the two minute silence thing had more or less died out, then was revived a few years back. I always forget about it, but then I'm fairly quiet most of the time anyway.

Most places I've worked have had a silence on 11/11

One time we had a silence for that Boxing Day tidal wave, which is a bit odd really. If we had 2 minutes silence every time someone in the world died in a tragedy we would never get anything done. I suppose it is the modern trend for feigning sentiment because peer group pressure demands it. It's bollocks. I don't mind the 2 minutes once a year for the dead troops, though, as that is about remembering their sacrifice.

It's not the event that I'm in any way against, it the fact that the supposed 'silence' that is broadcast is anything but.

Can't they turn the microphone gain down or disable the auto level so all you (possibly) hear is a very faint rustle?

Just attended my first remembrance day parade in France. 11th November is a public holiday here. We owe a great deal to those who died to keep us free. A tiny village in the pyrenees, but it lost 11 men in the 1914 18 war. All of them were remembered as their names were read out by the maire.

I always manage to find a quiet spot at 11.00 on 11/11 for two minutes, I don't tell anyone so nobody can complain.
