For sale only: A fully restored pair of Quad II amplifiers.

Selling the pair for £950. Would also swap for a silver Chord Hugo (with the revised casing featuring the larger phono socket mounting holes).

*** NO other offers or any haggling please, thank you ***

The Quads were both fully sanded down, primed and resprayed by myself a few years back. Both still in very nice condition with only the odd mark here & there to the paint that I couldn't pic up well with the camera. There's a ding to the corner of the transformer cover on one of them, and a slight dent to the other - Please see the photos below. Both chassis are unmolested or cut/drilled in any way. I also went to the expense of getting new name plates made as the originals were in very poor shape. They're a near perfect match for the originals, with the correct serial numbers used.

I used the best quality modern components I could source, whilst staying true to the original component types and 'voicing' of the originals. Original Mullard EF86 and GZ32 valves included, and two new matched pairs of the Russian Gold Lion KT66s. Expensive Riken Ohm carbon types on the tag boards. The tag boards are beautifully made fibre-glass reproductions sourced from Quad Musikwiedergabe in Germany. Mills 12W wirewound & custom 25uF F&T cap for the cathode bypass components. Hand-matched Russian paper in oils for the coupling caps. F&T 16+16uF caps for the psu smoothers (these were installed last year and they've only seen a few hours use since then). Solid core Teflon-insulated internal wiring the same diameter as the originals. No mods or 'improvements' to Peter Walker's original design have been made.

I have included an earthing stud in place of one of the Bulgin mains socket screws, in the corner of each amp to make it easy to add an earth wire for safety. Interconnects and mains leads included.

Please PM me if genuinely interested (due to variable health it sometimes takes me a day or two to reply, so please be patient). UK buyers only I'm afraid due to the weight and fragile nature of the valves.

Would really prefer it if buyer could collect (from Basingstoke) if possible - unfortunately I am not able to drive at the moment, and do not have sturdy enough boxes to risk sending via courier, though will look into getting a pair of boxes if necessary... More than happy to dem.

- John

Has the 22 been serviced or restored in any way?

It hasn't been rebuilt like the Quad IIs, but the power supply smoothing caps have been replaced by myself with Panasonic high temp. types and a few coupling caps were replaced by Quad when it was last serviced by its previous owner.

This is a travesty, those amps are Gorgeous! They should have been sold by now. You can see the amount of work thats gone into them....January is a bad month to sell...

Thanks - yes it does seem to be a bad time to sell. Might get this thread deleted by a mod and try again in a couple months time I guess. Or risk Ebay.

Wouldnt risk ebay... You can just let the thread die natually John as i did with my tt.. I hope to try again as well...yoyr amps deserve to go to a enthusiast tbh.. With i had the readies. They are maybe the only valve jobs that would tempt me into the bottle road again

Agree with all the above sentiments. If I hadn't bought a pair of kt66 monoblocs recently I would probably pull the trigger on these. The pre has got some fans online worth a look for anyone concerned about the SQ of an older valve pre. The cleanest (not necessarily the best) path is apparently using the tape input which bypasses some of the circuit.

I was feeling sorry for myself and frustrated that my Croft hasn't been snapped up as I think it's a bargain --- but this is a super bargain ..... GLWTS although if you can afford to sit with it I'm sure it will go quickly and probably for more in time --- just seem to be a buyers strike post christmas maybe - need spring !

There is something about the Quad IIs sound which is utterly magical. In a perfect world I'd keep them along with my other Quad systems. Due to pesky health these took a long time to complete as I could only do an hour or so's work on them at a time, daily, before flaking out. So they truly represent a labour of love, plus one of them used to belong to my Grandfather (who got me into this crazy hobby as a kid when he also have me a Grundig TK20) so there's a sentimental link there too. But selling these is the only way I can afford a Chord Hugo.

Needs must (grrrr!).

I was surprised how good the pre is actually once the triple 16uF PSU cap was replaced (I used 3 Panasonic 22uF NHGs, I think, from memory). A bit of deoxit on the phonos and choosing tight phono plugs helped too. Warm sounding, but certainly not wooly or veiled as internet hyperbole would have one believing. Great looking too - love that era of styling :)

Someone has got a bargain considering the blood sweat and tears that must have gone into these. And just how good they look and will undoubtedly sound.
