View Full Version : Celestion Ditton 120 Loudspeakers
Just picked up a pair of these and what a jolly, open and musical sound they produce, bop along nicely- just a tad on the grey, dry side but very nice all the same.

I've had a couple of pairs of those over the years Andy. As you say, they "bop along". The sound is pretty beefy for such a small speaker. Quite a rare these days and worth hanging onto.

They are nice Geoff- do folk have any other info on them, not much on the web regarding them.:)

It's not that I don't like the Maxim Dan. It's just that they are ridiculously overrated and nowadays, vastly overpriced (twenty years ago they were £5 boot sale fodder). The Ditton 120 is more durable and better, in my opinion. The Ditton 10 was the direct competitor to the Maxim and also better built. Well worth looking out for, as prices are still sensible, though they are a bit scarce.

I've probably still got the original Celestion brochure.

These really are a cheeky little loudspeaker.
Celestion pulled their socks up big time in the 80's I remember and did some really endearing little speakers (forget the statement SL6 series, which were balanced like ESL63's I remember being told). The 'DL' range especially need apologise to nobody IMO.

Why?
Well worth mentioning. I had the SL600 Si (similar drivers in Aerolam boxes). They were rather good. None of this series sounded anything like ESL63s though. The copper dome tweeter was very overrated. I felt it let the speaker down to an extent actually, it was none too detailed and not the smoothest. For the size the bass was very good, nice and tight, quite deep as well.
l cannot get over how well balanced these things sound and fun sounding talking of fun, what would a modern equivalent be of this speaker does anybody know?
They use ABRs don't they? Can't think of any contemporary speaker that does that.

Can't think of one! Certainly nothing of similar design principles. The later Celestion UL6 model was a bit of a let down and the drivers fell apart.
The only small speaker that's as much fun I can think of is the old Mission 780SE. The one with the black plastic grille. It's probably a better speaker too.

l will take 'Google challenge on that one Martin'.:)
Seriously l do not think you could have as much fun listening to these without taking your clothes off.

My kef cara uses them. Give a very nice controlled sound... Probably my fav non full range speaker for the presentation i like. Seems its not popular now

It's a reflex design. The ABR unit does the job of a port.

So, it is an ABR design Geoff?

Have wanted to try Ditton 120's for many years, not got round to it. I do have two pairs of Ditton 10's though. I believe it's the same bass/ mid unit and tweeter, smaller cabinet and no ABR. The early pair of Ditton 10's are 15 Ohm, and have bitumen damping pads glued on the inside of the cabinet, pretty heavy.
The only two drive units l can see are the two on the front, the only item l can see on the rear are the binding posts.........

Think these are 120s... The botto. One is a passive radiator
Chaps, the Ditton 120 l have here are about the size of Harbeth 30.1 but without a port.
If you put a picture up that would help ;)
I thought the 120 were the model that Grant has pictured. Which have an ABR.
Enough of the three letter acronyms! ;)
What does ABR mean? ... Bass Reflex i assume, but the A?

I think I know what's causing the confusion. There are two models called the Ditton 120. Andy must have the later and totally different one with just two drivers.
Which I believe are these:

Very seldom see these days. If anything scarcer than the earlier model and those are rare.

Scruffy pair on eBay just now at £85 plus postage, I particularly like the large flat head screws used to hold the drivers lol
