Exciting times!

Diet Pi has been under heavy development and v100 is about to drop. This version completes the migration to 'Jessie' (the current version of Debian / Raspbian) and also sees DP establish itself as probably the most comprehensive platform for building audio devices on a Pi.

I'm really looking forward to testing out Ampache, when I first started using Subsonic it was the only real competitor on features but development on it had died off. Since then it's come back into active development and is a lot more free than Subsonic (no 'premium' licence aspect).

For the next cycle I'm going to be working on ensuring the installation of subsonic is as minimal as possible.

As well as a range of software options (and i2s DAC drivers) dietpi also includes a number of simple tools to tweak and maintain your pi with - including dietpi-sync which can back up your music folder (across the network if needed) and keep track of changes, dietpi-backup which enables you to back up your whole configured system and dietpi-nice which lets you change the processing priority of the apps you've got installed, channelling resources to the most important ones.

It has an up-to-date kernel so it should work - if we can work out which module to install!

The developer 'Fourdee' is very responsive so if we work out how to do it he will almost certainly add it as an option (you can already select all of the hifiberry-dac drivers as part of the configuration tool.

I don't know if this is important or not, but the Hiface 1 is not a DAC, it's just an USB to S/PDIF converter.

Just mount your NAS (by samba or ftp) to dietpi (by default they'll mount to /mnt/samba or /mnt/ftp_client), then direct Subsonic to the folder in the webapp.

In the dietpi-config program you can define where samba shares are, so that they're automatically mounted at boot time. You just need to know the IP of the NAS and the share name.

Sharing by FTP is preferable however as it delivers a much faster transfer rate.

Well, I tried Ampache but I'm afraid I'm clearly too used to Subsonic now (and I have a premium licence) so the 'effort' of migrating seemed too much to deal with and I'm back on Subsonic for now - such a great combination of easy to use tools and a nice interface...

V100 of DietPi is super slick though. I'm really liking all the 'bonus features' like diet-sync, which enables me to automate backups really easily (I have a second drive on the back or my router shared over samba and mounted to a folder in the pi so all my music files are automatically backed up to it from the main Pi drive every night) also, the use of FTP to get files in to the Pi in the first place (as I don't have an optical drive attached to it at the moment) is a real boon as the transfer speeds are so much quicker than over samba (and FTP works easily on both windows and linux machines of which I have both knocking about the house).

Indeed, there seems to be so much spare processing overhead left, even when I'm transcoding files to be streamed out over the internet, that I'm thinking I might also have a play with some of the webserver / vpn tools on the same pi (audiophile blasphemy I know but hey, it's all just processing cycles innit!)

DietPi-Software | Modified the installation method of phpBB3 forums. No longer uses apt installation. Downloads and sets up the phpbb.zip.

DietPi-Config > AutoBoot options | Added "Console: Automatic Login" option. Useful for custom projects that require autologin on main terminal (tty1), without launching a specific program.

DietPi-Config (RPi) > Audio options > Soundcard | You can now select "none" as your soundcard. This will disable the snd-bcm2835 kernel module, saving memory and resources.

Yesterday I (finally!) tried dietpi.
I felt it is a very stable, well thought platform.

I took its time to install, but everything went just fine (except Subsonic, which couldn't be downloaded).

I couldn't stand with the Hifi/MPD deamon, though. I thought it was similar to Volumio/MoOde, but it isn't that same thing at all.

I tried Ampache but didn't like it. It worked, I could play files from the USB disc attached to the PI but I wasn't able to put the PI playing them itself (sorry for my English, I hope you understand...).

I really liked Kodi to play videos. Really fluid and stable. I just wish it was as good as Volumio/MoOde to play music... Maybe I can install some addon to make it better?

Also, transferring files using FTP from my computer to the usb disc attached to the Pi work, but it was painfully slow, around 150KB/s. Why is that?
My network is NOT that slow...

One question: should I connect my USB discs to Pi or to the router?
I guess each has its vantages and disadvantages ,right?

Hi Luis,

Probably worth another go with Subsonic, the issue is that the installation package is downloaded from Sourceforge which has become somewhat flakey of late - we can't do anything about it as that's where the developer hosts the program.

HiFi/MDP is a very minimal program - it works like moode/volumio but doesn't have all the features (it plays music and you can create playlists, that's about it) http://www.ympd.org/ for ore info.

It looks like Ampache needs to have the local player module set up to make it play out of the pi, there's more details here: https://github.com/ampache/ampache/wiki/MPD - I'll reinstall this evening and see if I can get it working.

I don't know why FTP isn't being fast for you, on a clean connection it runs really quick for me.

As for disks I have 2, one formatted FAT32 that's shared using SAMBA from my router and one formatted EXT4 attached to the Pi (the benefit of using EXT4 is it doesn't have to use a 'translation layer' as NTFS/FAT drives do in linux, so it uses less processor)

Kodi is a good app, have a search around for music add ons for it (there are many) and see if there's one that suits you, it took me a while to work out how to get libraries loaded in to it but it's ok once you have that sorted.

What sort of machine are you connecting to your Pi with? If you have 'HiFi' installed and working you can ignore the YMPD element and use any number of other MPD clients to control it with, I quite like GMPC but there are loads to choose from: http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Clients

I'm using my computer (Linux Mint) and smarphone (Android).

BTW, I don't know what happened yesterday.
Today, transfering files through ftp is just fine (between 3 and 6MBps). :)

Mint is an ubuntu / debian derivative so you can install GMPC and / or Ario from the software centre and use them to control MPD and there are also quite a few Android apps you can use too.

Although I would argue it's worth persevering to get Subsonic working, it really is a fine audio player and streamer.

Yes,

You can set up a number of 'players' in the settings window -

Webplayer (so you can access your music remotely),

Jukebox (local play - turn off all transcodings) and there are also modes that will trigger downloading a playlist file that can be opened by VLC/Foobar and have your music streamed to those separate players.

You can also have multiple versions of all these types of players that trigger different transcoder settings, so you could have a home webplayer that streams HQ audio and an 'out and about' webplayer that downsamples the music stream to save bandwidth.

One thing I really like is that on the android app you have have the music streaming to your phone, but as you walk in through the door you can hit the 'RC' button in the app and it switches to Jukebox mode so the music switches to your speakers (almost) seamlessly.

I tried Subsonic and it is, indeed, a good solution. Worked just fine without any flaws.

I have one doubt: in jukebox player, when using flac files, I had to disable all transcoding, so the player doesn't "convert" them to mp3.
Do I need to do that?
I thought it would never transcode music or video when in jukebox player.

Glad to hear you got it working Luis.

I'm not sure why there's the option to transcode when you're in Jukebox mode, but as you've found, all you need to do is unselect the transcode settings in that player and it plays them 'straight' - if you want to confirm for yourself that it's working correctly you can log in to your pi with a terminal and run htop, play a file and you'll see ffmpeg running and the various parameters it's using.

Just a quick note to point out that DietPi has just been updated to release 102 with a significant number of new developments, fixes and adaptations unfortunately there are so many fixes in this version it's not available as an update and will require a new image - but of course you can use dietpi-back up to grab your working system and then apply it back to your new installation:

Important DietPi Changes:
All DietPi images have been updated to v102 and are required to run the latest version of DietPi. Previous images will no longer update, and are no longer supported.
Passwords | All passwords throughout DietPi are now dietpi (previously raspberry). This includes everything with a password (eg: dietpi-software installations).
DietPi for Odroid C1/XU4 has changed to Debian Jessie | The DietPi images are now based on the excellent Debian Jessie images by Meveric http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=96&t=17542&p=114970#p114970. Why Debian? First, its more streamline and lightweight when compared to Ubuntu. Second, it reduces my coding workload from 3 distros to 2, as Ubuntu has different packages/filepaths/requirments that required additional coding and testing.

DietPi-Launcher | Menu system that allows you to run any of the DietPi programs, all from one place.

DietPi-Software | PHP now sets upload_max_filesize and php_max_post_size to 2GB. This will increase the max filesize limit with php uploads (eg: Owncloud). Previously 20~MB.
DietPi-Software | PHP now sets upload_tmp_dir to /var/tmp/php_upload_tmp. This was previously stored on /tmp as ramdisk, which limited php uploads (eg: Owncloud) to half your total RAM, causing possible failed uploads.
DietPi-Software (Jessie) | PHP will also install and optimize APCu along side Opcache (APCu is data store, OPcache is opcode cache). This should vastly improve webserver performance.
DietPi-Software | HAproxy will now install v1.6.2.
DietPi-Software | Deluge-web no longer requires a service restart by the user during 1st run.
DietPi-Software | Enabled Deluged logging with level warning to /var/log/deluged.log and /var/log/deluge-web.log

DietPi is about to become easier than ever before to install and setup.

In beta at the moment is an unattended install solution, which will mean all you need to do is DL the image, burn it sd card and edit one file (/boot/dietpi.txt) as well as being able to set your wireless settings etc (which you've been able to do for a while - so the system comes straight up and you don't need to patch it in to your router etc). There is now the option to pre-select your software choices in this file so DP will boot, resize itself on to the sd card, run any updates, install the software you've selected and set it all running.

Just to note that V106 is now up and running with Shareport Sync support, so you can 'throw' your pi audio from any Airplay enabled device (or any Windows or Mac machine with 'Airfoil' installed: https://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/)

This is a nice solution to having Spotify playing out of your Pi as you can run it on your Windows box and simply Airplay it through the Pi.

Yes (and a suitable pre-amp for the mic) but it doesn't need to be anything fancy, if you have access to a basic USB sound card / interface it should be plenty.
