Sorry to have to say this, but having refurbished a pair of HB3's the pair on ebay have had the mid-range units re-foamed, but it does not look like a particularly good job was done?

Yes i noticed ! .. Are new drivers abailable ?

I would doubt that new drivers are available, but could be wrong. It would be possible to remove the current surrounds and do the job properly. The foam surrounds were about £12 and are from a genuine supplier on ebay.

Before and after pics of mine on here :-

You just have to make sure you clean all the old surround off and use the correct glue to when you replace them. Of course you will not know if he used super glue or something equally horrible.

Bloody hell , very nice job indeed .

How do you clean up the cones

Puffin

Isopropyl (Rubbing) alcohol. However you should use it sparingly to remove the remains of any foam surround, and try not to remove the doping applied to the cone (it should still feel sticky when cleaned). I used a cotton bud and a scalpel to soften the stuck on crud and flick off any hard or stubborn bits. Patience is required.

Thanks for the info .. I had a set of HB3 i brought from new , and about 4 years ago got rid of them , the only thing wrong with them was the foam had gone sticky . Knowing what i know now i just could have repaired them .. Bugger !

The foam always goes but as they are in a sealed inner chamber a few small holes seems to have little effect on the sound. You are unlikely to get any with fronts on as the foam covers rotted away years ago!

Note also that the pair on Ebay atm are Series 1s, not series 2s as claimed.

There were a number of cosmetic changes to both types which didn't make any difference to the sound. The big differences between series one and series two are that the S1 had the tweeter above the mid-range unit and the crossover bolted to the top inside surface of the cab, whereas the S2 had the mid-range unit at the top and the crossover attached directly to the input sockets on a removable panel in the back of the cab. There were also minor changes to the crossover itself, but the same drive units were used for both. If you do a Google image search for Heybrook HB3 you'll see examples of both types (and the horrid much later silver series!).

I can vouch for the Ebay pair being S1s as I probably built them!

Same as mine and I must have tried approximately 10 different pairs to replace them and I still keep going back to them.
They need to be fairly close to a rear wall and a decent bit of juice up em to get the best out of them and preferably send the xovers off to Paul (Reffc off this forum) at Reference Fidelity Components for a refurb and IMO they take some beating for the money.
They are a bit coloured and the tweeter is a little spitty but they have a nice sparkle about them and they image really well, pair them with an adjustable supertweeter and we're:smoking::D

If anyone has the schematic for the HB3 crossover (S1 or S2) I would be grateful.
