I had to disassemble one of these cables to re-solder the shielding which had broken off. So, I thought I might as well share what this cable looks like inside.
There are two individually shielded cables in a heat shrink tubing. The shielding of each cable is wrapped in some sort of copper coloured material which seems to be synthetic. I wonder if this and the signal wire insulation is not PTFE ? I say that because it is a bitch to get off. The diameter of the insulation is larger than that of the wires inside which leaves some room (air) around them. Interesting !
I have two pairs of these cables and they sound very good, i.e. they don't really have a sound at all and let it all through which is good for a cable IMHO.
I've just finished two pairs of Klotz MY206 cables which I've put into the system. I wonder how they will compare to these SSC's ? Will let you know when I get a chance.

I believe the cable used is RG316: a cable having a characteristic impedance of 50Ω. The inner conductor is stranded silver-plated copper covered steel, the dielectric insulation is PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and the shield is a silver-plated copper braid. The outer insulation is FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene), which allows the cable to be used in high temperatures of up to 200°C.
The two cables shown are wired ‘shotgun’ fashion; that is, the inner conductor of one cable is used for the signal, with the inner conductor of the second cable used for the return. The shields of the two cables are left floating and act as a partial Faraday cage.
I am surprised they broke to be honest. Must have been handled a bit roughly?
Yeah, I'm a bit confused by the original post. I don't see how the shield can have "broken off" because the braided shield isn't connected to anything in the first place (in this interconnect). It's as Barry describes above.
look at the first pic. The shields where soldered to the body of the plug (this is what broke) while the two inner wires where soldered together to the central part..
I then have to ask if they are genuine SSCs, as mine are as described by Barry above.
Someone has wired it differently to the norm. I hesitate to say wrong as if they work then they work
Curious! Why then, weren't the cables secured by the cable clamp of the connectors? What is the point of wiring the two cables in parallel: it doubles the overall capacitance per unit length? The whole point of wiring the cables 'shotgun' fashion is to halve the capacitance per unit length over that of the individual cable.
They are original for sure.. I have a second pair ... will check and report back
Ya, you guys are right ! my second pair is configured the way as you describe.. so I must be going bonkers :eek: I honestly cannot recall having repaired the shorter pair in the past.. but maybe I did :scratch:. Anyways, if it was me, I did it wrong ... thank's for having noticed !

It doesn't matter. If the screen is of suitably good copper, the cable can be wired either way. Screen attached and working as neg with two cores commoned or screen not attached and each core being used as + and -. Me personally, I'd probably use just one cable and have the screen as neg.
Pukka SSC is RG316U - I stress the 'U' here and I've yet to find large drums readily available via the usual suspects... There's been so much talked about how these cables are made up on here and on HFS it's not really for me to mention it all over again, but best to say that only the inner cores are used for hot and return, the screens not, the stripped ends being covered in a layer or two of heatshrink!
100m drums of RG316/U are readily available from RS.

Then you have SC - and it's not quite as good as SSC in my experience.

I checked my ebay archive and it seems the cables are SSC.... BUT ... as I mentioned, I probably tampered with them myself, not noticing the correct configuration. Oddly though, only the shorter pair is configured with both cores attached to +). But anyways, to my defence, it was in 2013 when i got them and I probably did have a couple of beers.

hmm, I'm not sure that the RG316/U mentioned is the same wire used in my cables. It does look very similar, but the inner dialectic has no space around the core and the core itself has 7 winds.

It's not obvious from your photograph. The designation RG316/U is a generic designation: it defines the electrical properties of the cable, the materials used, dimensions and geometry. There can and will be small variations, depending on manufacturer.

Since RG316/U is used in the aerospace industry it can be regarded as 'military grade'. They were designed to carry signals at radio frequencies not audio, though they can, and are, used for that task.

true, but struck me as a bit OTT coming from a Co. that despises marketing talk and knowing that the total material cost of a pair is about 15 dollars and that the cable used is not very exotic at all ! Wow.
