I've just received my mounting plate from Speedy Steve, so am looking to mount my 774. The question is, how do I determine the correct spindle to pivot distance as there is no adjustment as such for the cart, so surely overhang is going to depend on which cart is mounted?

Do I just go with 215.4?
Is the arm tube adjustable?
If there is no adjustment either at the arm base or headshell then select you cartridge carefully Ali, especially if it uses a FL contact like stylus....found these on an old PinkFish thread. the stylus to mounting hole distance varies.....

Yes the arm tube is adjustable for length, however there is no real adjustment for the cart, which to me means no overhang adjustment?
Yes I can alter the overhang by sliding the arm tube back and forth, but this will throw out the cart alignment yes?
Which brings me back to what is the correct spindle to pivot distance..
The mounting plate is the same as Steve made for Andrew Lehane, the idea being there is a large range of adjustment available, such that a 12" arm can be accomodated without having to redrill the mounting. I'd like to fix the plate such that the Mission is mounted at or near the minimum of the adjustmentl so that I have as large a range of adjustment available for the future as possible.

Cheers Jamie, yes read that. Luckily I will have plenty of scope for adjustment, I just need to know if the 215.4 is the minimum.

215.4 is the correct distance from spindle to pivot. Not quite sure what you are referring to with maximum adjustment on the mounting plate. Like any other arm, you screw it down tight in the right place and leave it there. Cartridge alignment / overhang are one and the same thing - the only adjustment needed or available, and achieved by sliding the arm tube back and forth. That isn't to say there is some mathematical theory behind that - just that I have used dozens of cartridges in that arm and never given it a 2nd thought. It stayed firmly in the one and only place drilled for it 215.4 mm from the spindle.
Great arm - I used it in my system for at least 15 years until I was spoiled with a new toy. Have fun :cool:

Thanks Richard, good to know. The plate I have had made is an extended SME plate, such that a variety of arms with SME fitting can be put on the deck. Main thought was in the future to try a 12" arm, which I'll be able to do without changing the plate.
Use the nominal SME tonearm template as per the original base the 774 came with. The bearing assembly was set half way back in the SME mount, so you should be able to calculate from there. Adjusting the pipe back and forth is fine, as it won't be by very much.
We got best results with the smallest damping paddle just brushing the fluid. At the time, any more then this killed atmosphere and made the sound too dry we found.
