WTD: Arrgh - Still need budget amp for friend.

Hi All

I'm so pi$$ed off - both the amp (Rotel RA-820BX4) and speakers (JPW MM's) I bought from the Audio Jumble on Sunday are buggered.

So that's £65 of my mates budget absolutely wasted, I didn't get the name of either seller - I just know that the guy I bought the amp from put little cards on his kit with quotes from What Hifi etc.

So I still need an amp - A chap on the Wam - Seasidersrock (ian) has been fantastically kind by donating his missions, so thankfully its just an amp I need.

If anyone has anything decent but cheap, I'd be so grateful. Obviously the budget has gone, I haven't got the heart to tell him, so i'll have to cover this - so looking around £40 max really

I must seem like a real pain the arse - apologies all.

You say both amp and speakers are buggered, have you tried your donated speakers to see if the amp works?
Try connecting the speakers to the REMOTE set of outputs in case the main are faulty.
Have you checked the two fuses towards the top right in the picture? Disconnect from the mains before opening.

I've just noticed there are fuses on the main board also, bottom middle of the picture, maybe output fuses? Check these too.

No idea with the speakers - they are just distorted and only one works - they were only a tenner and I have replacements so not too worried about those. I also tried them with my amp and one of them is definitely broken.

The amp though - well there was only 1 channel working (using my own speakers) - so I ordered new fuses and fitted those - no change. In addition the stereo/mono switch - when in stereo - only one channel and when in mono - both channels, but it sounds very flat and not at all right.

More worrying than all of that though, is the sound sometimes fades away with a crackle and then will reappear with a crackle.
Changing the fuses was the limit of my know how - I also tried using the remote set of inputs, but same thing happened using those.

Nice amp that, I use one, and other 300 series bits in my bedroom system.

Re that seller, selling faulty goods is a no no :spank:

Contact John Howes - lovely guy - and tell him (he organises it) he should be able to work out who this rogue was, and yes it is worth hunting him down.

The Rotel is a nice little amp. Well worth fettling (check the mains plug if it came with one - so many are badly wired up, you never know...) eventually...

I'd also check for leaking caps on the Rotel, an easy fix if you can use a soldering iron.

Sounds like there are dirty contacts on the switches if stereo/mono makes both channels work, plus the crackly disappearing act.
