Releasing CDs based on recording off a physical vinyl disc?

I was on the point of buying a CD copy of Stomu Yamashta's "The Go Sessions" when I noticed a negative review to the effect that "This CD has been recorded from a vinyl record! You can hear crackles intermittently throughout it".

I believe that there are other instances of this cheeky "remastering" practice. Where the originating vinyl is in pristine condition and the turntable / pickup arm are of the highest quality it may be just about acceptable but if the vinyl comes from a charity shop and something like an ion Profile LP Digital Conversion Turntable is used it seems to be a complete con. Vendors should be entirely open about this "Vinyl to Digital" trick.

A list of culprits would be a useful "pinned" feature here.

Hi Aaron, I had a similar experience with an Amazon CD-R, which was advertised as burned from original sources, which is a vague way of saying 'copied from something else', in my case an mp3, in yours 'a record'...either way it's sly and underhand if it's not clearly advertised as such, and will pollute the SH market....:(

I think this is an issue for trading standards if undeclared and certainly record labels and artists should also be involved.

Frankly this type of thing in my view falls under the framework of bootlegs. Only time it has happened to me was years ago in a shop in which I bought what perported to be Boston's unreleased third album on CD. In reality it was a substandard recording made from Barry Goudreau's first solo release, off vinyl, and not an unreleased Boston album. It was full of noise, distortion and clipping..... I took it back.

Sometimes there is no choice but to buy a vinyl ripped CD.

Kraftwerk (rather stupidly IMHO) completely deny the existance of their pre - Autobahn catalogue.

This comprised the excellent title by Organisation "Tone Float" and the albums "Kraftwerk 1", "Kraftwerk 2" and "Ralf and Florian". All these albums are superb and in the case of "Ralf and Florian" particularly - are actually better than many of the official catalogue albums.

In the mid 1990s I bought bootleg CDs of these titles mostly on the Germanofon label. Actually these aren't bad - for the time they were done these sound quite decent. Strangely enough earlier today I bought "Tone Float" again on CD from the always excellent Ultima Thule Mail Order company in Leicester who claim they have a version which is the best yet - will be interested to hear it !
