As of Monday, that's the end of free plastic bags at the supermarket. If you want one it's 5p each....
Been like that here for an age Rob. took a bit of getting used to but I now have a number of bags for life from tesco that I take with me. got a couple replaced free today actually.. have to say it has tidied the streets and countryside up a fair bit into the bargain

It's been that way for years in Scotland and Wales! ;)
When it first happened here, Del made some large carrier bags out of left over curtain material, and sewed handles onto them. That's what we use to put our shopping into, which is both practical and environmentally friendly :)
On another note, supermarkets should cut down drastically on all forms of packaging. The amount of shite stuff is wrapped in is a complete waste (utterly unnecessary) and harmful to our planet!

Too right! - the amount of plastic I put out for recycling seems to have doubled. The only way to cut down on the amount of plastic packaging is to use a traditional greengrocer who supplies paper bags, and use a traditional delicatessen for the cold meats and cheese. Unfortunately the local delicatessen here closed a year ago, to be replaced, FFS, by a (designer label) clothes agency! :doh: Maybe I should have given the delicatessen more of my custom? :scratch:

Yup, we use a mixture of traditional shops and supermarkets. Even when we use the latter, 90% of what we buy is fresh 'loose' produce, so we always minimise on packaging. Plastic carrier bags are a nightmare because they don't biodegrade.
I'd charge 50p or a £1 for them, not 5p (with all proceeds going to charity), in order to force folk to think differently about how they transport their shopping. Here in Wales, even if you go to a Chinese or Indian takeaway restaurant, you get no carrier bags for your food!

What do you do with the ones you buy? Do you keep them and reuse them, until they break, or just toss them in the bin and buy more again next time?

Lidl and Aldi have always charged I think.
No problem though as I take some 'bags for life' to Lidl that Morrisons where once giving away for free. And a Morrisons 6 bottle wine carrying bag that's really useful :)

A while ago the Co-op offered bags made from corn starch. These would degrade harmlessly after a few months. I can't understand why they aren't made compulsory. Cost isn't going to be a factor if you don't have to pay the 5p fee.

What happened to the 'magic' shopping bags you used to be able to get? The ones that start really tiny and as you fill them, open up into a big mesh bag. A couple of those in a pocket and you're sorted!
Folk reckoned it wouldn't work up here, but you rarely see anyone buying the 5p ones now. its been a win win as the bags for life program gives you a higher quality, bigger bag for 10p that is replaced free when it bursts, and the streets are cleaner and no more carrier bags stuck in the trees etc

My local Tesco Extra has been giving away their bags for life this last week just to get people thinking about the change over. Nice touch.
However, the Waitrose bags for life are way thinner than they used to be and anything resembling a pointed edge will tear a hole in it. Yes, the bag will be replaced free of charge, but I would have expected better of Waitrose.

thats what I did with them, several times till they disintegrated. Have to buy proper liners now. the positives outweigh the drawbacks though

I use them for bagging up rubbish. Supply has outstripped demand over the years, though. I've probably got 50 or more stashed. Some times I take a load down to the Kwik-E-Mart for them to re-use.
If it was up to me we would have those waxed paper bags you get in America. Anyway there is no way I am taking a proper bag to the supermarket like some old woman. I might stuff a couple of carriers in my pocket if I remember to.

We keep our shopping bags in the boot of the car, and so they only see the light of day when they're taken out at the supermarket.

Me too....got Dozens of them in there. It was hard to get to grips with initially, I have to admit, but its back to the good old days mentality wise when you needed a bag, or you dropped things:eek:
I've never been comfortable with shopping in Supermarkets. Too impersonal. I don't like shopping in general but supermarket shopping is the worst.

Now that plastic bags are no longer free, how do you decide how many you'll need to hold the provisions delivered by the supermarket, and how is the amount owed in that respect calculated when you place the order - or are the provisions delivered in boxes, and if so, are those left with you so you can unpack in your own time, or must you unpack while the delivery driver is there, to allow him to take the boxes away? :)
Until I'm old and infirm, and thus unable to do my own shopping, I won't have it delivered, as I much prefer picking my own fresh produce. It would be fine for tins or jars, etc, but I want to be the one selecting my fruit and veg, not some dweeb from Tesco (or whatever) who won't have my best interests at heart, and so is unlikely to get me the best stuff!

They're introducing a blanket charge of (I think) 40p if you want bags but you do have the option to not have bags and unpack the boxes while the driver waits (which is what I'll plump for).
Never had a problem with any of the fresh produce but they're always very helpful if you have a problem such as an unacceptable substitute. I drink a lot of bottled water and it's just more convenient for them to do the humping for me.
Drink a load of bottled water too...Our tap water is ok but has no minerals potassium or magnesium in it that are important to liver condition so i get Derbyshire water mostly. I am on crutches but still do my and my sons shopping twice a week.. I like the independence and selecting my own.. Forcing myself to get round the shop is important mentally as well as physically for me..not giving in to it lol...some say i am stubborn;)

Your in Londinium so your water is likely to be hard and hard water has magnesium usually. Magnesium protects the liver from various things and alcohol destroys it. It was found the reason so many Scots for instance die of liver disease was not excessive drinking of booze(n england. For example drink just as much if not more) but because our water is soft and lacking magnesium. This report upset the Scottish govt and N Sturgeon and was blanked. It didnt suit her war on the demon drink

Our local council asks us to make sure they are double wrapped in carrier bags...
My son does. He buys poop bags.. You can get them pretty cheaply if you look around....he is never without a bag of poo:lol:

Usually Asda but I've also used Morrisons. Their system's actually better, they text you to let you know if there are any substitutes, the name of your van driver & the van's registration number(?)
