Hi from Hi Fi returner Jeff

Hi People !

Have recently re-discovered the pleasures of hi fi (got my old system down from the loft and made a couple of purchases) and happened upon this great site.

My old system consisted of A Dual 505 series 2 (with Nagaoka MP-11) a Nad 3020,Marantz CD 65 (original model) and a pair of Celestion DL6's linked with mostly Cambridge interconnects.

I have recently got my hands on a recently serviced Audiolab 8000a amp (excellent) a Cambridge Dac magic, A Project Debut SE 3 and a Marantz CD 6000 OSE Ki and I am currently experimenting with the various set ups.
I also have a pioneer pd 7700 and a pioneer PL-15R turntable.

As you can probably guess, my budget isn't massive, but i'm looking to upgrade the speakers, they do sound good and I have tried a couple of others that came my way but they sadly didn't cut he mustard ( Mordaunt Short MS45 and Mission MS 20i Pearl)
Have members any suggestions as to what the next step up could be at a reasonable cost on the second hand market.

I have recently acquired a pair of Pioneer HPM 60's from I think the early eighties which I'm in the process of re-foaming - I haven't ran them yet, just waiting till the repair kit arrives before I give them a try and I acquired a pair of Celestion DL 8's locally but unfortunately the tweeters are kaput ad i don't seem to be able to find replacements (they look in tact with no sign of damage or loose connection, but no sound on either unit just the woofers operating)

By the way, Music tastes across the board, but particularly 70's and 80's rock and soul, popular jazz, recently I've been listening to the new Don Henley and Keith Richards albums and a smattering of 60's rock and blue's - Little Willie John, Nina Simone, Quincy Jones and rare Motown.

Hi Jeff. Glad to see another Geoff here, even if you don't spell yours quite right :). Welcome to AOS.

You have some perfectly respectable gear there. I think I've got a Pioneer PL-15S (slightly different) tucked away somewhere.

Many of us are on limited budgets, me included. The HPM-60s should be fun once you get them up and running.

Tell us what music you listen to and what further plans you may have for your system. We like to hear what people have in mind.

Welcome jeff I see from your kit that you have some classic pieces of kit, we love that sort of stuff. :)

NAD 3020 is a great little amp and I have a soft spot for celestion speakers.

Welcome from me- great old system you have - probably none of it really needs to be replaced. But it is fun to do it anyway. You will struggle to find a cheap, modern speaker that is as good as those Celestions.

Pioneer HPM-60's are a seriously nice speaker - I have a pair myself and would not part with them (unless I could get the HPM-100's or the next one up but, they'd have to be mint). I dont think for the budget money you could do much better than those mate (IMHO) but, music/hi-fi/our own ears are all individual and subjective criteria so other people may think different :). The designer of those speakers was actually not wholly Pioneer, they were designed by a well respected man who worked for a renowned British speaker manufacturer - I think it was JBL or JPW (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) and as such are a lot better than people realise when they see a Pioneer badge on them !!!! The woofers themselves are worth re-foaming as long as the rest is good as they are British.

Also, that Pioneer 7700, if I remember correctly has the stable platter mechanism in it and are quite a good CD transport !!!! My motto is, if something sounds great to your ears, why bother changing it (unless its a substantial upgrade); also, if something aint broke, why try to fix it ???? Welcome to AOS :)

Thanks for your welcome and information, particularly Loz for your detailed response.

I got an update on the Pioneer foam replacements I ordered from the US - should be here by weekend so I can't wait to get them repaired judging by what has been said.
Pity about the DL8's from what i've read them seem to have quite a good reputation - it seems difficult to source replacement tweeters - I'll put them on the back burner for now and maybe I'll be lucky and locate a pair for a reasonable price(Would love to get my hands on a pair of DL 10's but a bit out of my reach as the only one's I have seen are circa £300)
The Pioneer CD 7700 has the inverted player mechanism (play's discs upside down) and is quite a warm musical unit.
Still not fully appreciated the Marantz 6000 OSE Ki yet - it does seem a little harsh in comparison to the Marantz CD 65, Maybe if I change the interconnects ? (Cambridge Pacifics)
Forgot to mention I have what I consider an excellent tuner - Rotel RT 850L - really does produce a pleasant detailed reproduction.
