View Full Version : Noisy Leccy Meter
My electricity meter has started making a weird sort of buzzing, chirping noise. I thought it was my phono stage at first but with ear up to the speakers it ws clear that it wasn't. Finally traced the sound to the meter which is covered by a plywood box, tastefully veneered in mahogany.
The sound varies from a chirping, to a whine to a buzz. It only started yesteray evening. I've switched off every electrical appliance in the house and it still does it.
Any ideas as to the cause? Should I be concerned? It is loud enough to annoy during listening so I have to get it sorted.

Is it one of the old ones with dials on it?
If it is your local electrical distributor should change it out, as part of their ongoing maintenance program.
In your area it's Western Power http://www.westernpower.co.uk/About-us/Our-Business/Distribution-area/Find-your-distributor.aspx

It was only changed a couple of years ago, maybe 2011. Although the replacement was no different to the old one in appearance.

It might be that the electricity utility have started using a newer mains borne communications system and you are hearing the noises from that.
I would definitely send a firmly worded mail to them that the current state of play is unacceptable.
@Al. sounds like that could be a plan
Well if they have done that then they started it at about 1830 hrs last night as prior to that there was no problem.
I have to call Npower anyway to find out where my God-damned money is so I will ask them about this at the same time.
It'll be all the coins inside rattling... Have you tried emptying it? :eyebrows:
Marco.
Try taking that magnet off it ;)
Sssssh... they're refunding me £425.42

Did you ever see the movie 'The China Syndrome'? I reckon your meter is about to do a cataclysmic meltdown and burrow its way to the Earth's core.
Just got in and the meter now totally silent. This morning it was going kooka crazy. Bizarre.

I hope not because I can't get anyone out to look at it for over a month from now.

Coolio... That'll pay for your IMFs! :)
Marco.
My new cd player too with change left over. I'll probably just squander that on records
This meter is getting worse to the point where it is actually distracting me from my music. Unacceptable!
It is quiet when I return to the house after being away all day but as soon as I power anything up then it starts buzzing and whining - louder than a refrigerator or a freezer. No-one wants that two feet behind them when listening.
It only started after I got the IMF speakers - could be a coincidence?
Spoke to the power company who say they can send a gadgee out to check it. Need to make an appointment. 'Okay', says I, 'when is the earliest?'
'Well we are all booked up for the next month.'
'Okay I'll make the earliest appointment you have.'
'We can only book one month ahead and all the slots are full'
'So what am I supposed to do?'
'You'll have to call next week and hope there are some empty slots'
WTF?
That took half-an hour. Looks like I will have to try again and break some balls this time.
