Excellent film. ...as was the next from the same director Descent. However while Doomsday is not a complete dog its not as good as his first two.

The most frightening thing about it was the amount of bloomin' ad breaks - I take back anything I might have said about the BBC in another thread!
Quite entertaining, nonetheless, though I watched most of it without any volume - listening to the Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence soundtrack by Ryuichi Sakamoto - didn't really go together very well, if I'm honest! :lol:

Yes badly placed add breaks are annoying. As advertising is on the wane on TV (Web has taken over in the UK at least), maybe there will be less of it (doubt that).
In principal adds are okay but I wish more thought would be given to when and where to place them.
Regardless, Dog Soldiers is a good film, reminds me a bit of the Howling.

im more in to phycological fear films - blair witch messed me up! and japanese films with people in mirrors and hair over their faces (like the ring films... eeek!)

Yes some of those Japanese films are very weird, though not scary to me anyway. Have you seen the one about Spirals (its a bit Lovecraftian in its vibe)..trying to remember its name ummmmmmmmmmmmm Uzumaki (Spiral vortex). Now thats a weird unsettling film.

i wonder if there is a universally scary film?
pretty much anything that has things in mirrors that arnt there when they turn round messes me up. but that is pretty much because of a dream and an experience i had when i was younger
the dream: in the bathroom brushing my teeth, spat the water out, looked in mirror, horrible distorted scary face standing behind me
the experience: went down the staircase at home and saw a white shadowy figure reflected in the window in front of the door to the cupboard under the stairs.
that really really really messed me up for a long time
i actually see quite a lot of figures in the dark these days... but im used to it now!
The (original) Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Shining (or anything to do with scary hotels) do it for me......

For me one of the most repugnant films I have seen is called 'The Hostel'. It's about a European youth hostel that supplies an underground sadist organisation with 'material', by luring twenty-something backpackers with the prospect of free sex, drugs and rock and roll.
It is quite simply one of the nastiest films I have ever seen. Would you believe they made a sequel?
The Japanese flim 'The Audition' has a shocking ending, as does the Austrian film 'Fun and Games'.
'Candyman' is also pretty gruesome.

I think the current "slasher porn", which is all movies like Hostel, Wolf Creek, Saw and their ilk are gratuitous in the extreme. Where is the horror, suspense, the creeping terror. It is the hidden, lurking terrors that are scary...the subtle. However we now have movies which must pile the ways in which a human body can be shredded on and on and on. Each film must seek to out do the last in the ways in which people can be killed by other people.
I personally find stalk and slash movies predictable and IMHO past there sell by date. Quality story telling has been replaced by visual overkill.
The movie Marco mentions is the other end of the extreme European Italian, French, Spanish axis of horrors. Cheap, nasty, sleezy, explotation movies many masquerading as so called art movies but are awful rubbish IMHO. No stories to mention just long extended scenes of again humans being killed raped etc.
Modern horror films lack suspense, quality stories, acting etc and are an excuse for the visual porn of dismembered bodies.

The least frightening movie of all time for me was The Exorcist, more laughs than Python, complete crap IMHO, of course.
Movies these days all seem to be made for the adolescent pimples 'n popcorn market, can't remember the last time I actually went to see a flick at the picks.;)

i have seen quite a lot of things in my life time if i think about it.
old lady sat at the end of my bed when i was a kid.
shape of a man in a field that disapeared.
i used to smell freshly baked bread and pipe tobaco in the house i grew up in (no one smoked or made bread and the house used to have a bakehouse on the side of it).
i used to always feel a presence in the evenings in a flat i used to live in.
i saw smething move past my financees parents bathroom door
as i said, nowadays i frequently, more than ever before, see things.
there is ofter a young girl watching over my fiancee at the end or side of our bed - i have seen this probably 20 times plus
ghosts or guardians? im not sure - im certain there have been times in my life when there has been someone or something looking out for me. but maybe thats just a product of the sometimes very difficult things i have lived through

i know loads of people who think its aload of old toss. and in fairness now i know whats going to happen it does a lot less for me... it really did scare the hell out of me at the time
i used to live near a wood that always gave me the heebeegeebees ..maybe that didnt help? il tell you what, the film didnt help the wood situation either ... it was on the way to the nearest pub so obviously i had to pass it nearly every night, and on the way home in the dead of night...
For me, the whiney American teens were so irritating I was on the side of the evil 'thing' that was after them.

I've always had a bit of an obsession with the dark, and I love scaring people - giving them a fright by surprising them, basically. LOL!
I remember as a teenager playing with one of my best mates, who was a couple of years older than me and a real whizz at making things, particularly anything involving electronics. At night sometimes we used to drive up to the local Asda car park (which was huge), and at the back it was surrounded by trees, apart from a small path which led through to (or from) another part of the car park.
He'd made a battery operated 'echo chamber', which a microphone plugged into, and at the end of it you could attach a speaker (which he had also made). So what we used to do was park the car right at the back of the car park quite near (but not too near) the trees/woods and the path where people would walk through, quite often girls on the way back from a night out, party, or whatever.
Then we hid the speaker in the trees as far away from the car as possible, using quite a long length of cable, and fed it back to the 'echo chamber', got back into the car, turned the lights off, then crouched down and hid in the dark and waited for our 'victims' to appear coming out of the woods... As soon as someone appeared, we'd crouch down on the floor and one of us would whisper through the microphone "You're going to dieeeeeeee" or "I know where you live, so I'll be seeing you later... Muhahahahahaha...", saying it in a really creepy voice, which through the 'echo chamber' sounded totally mad and really quite scary (well it did when you were 15)!! :eyebrows:
Bloody hell, they didn't half jump!!! You should have seen the look on their faces as they were trying to work out where the voices were coming from. Our car of course just looked like it had been parked there - there was no sign of us inside it... As they walked away (usually quite quickly, haha) one of us got hold of the mike and said again in a really creepy voice "Runnnnnnnnnn nowwwww while you still cannnnnnnnnnnnn", as it echoed throughout the dark and deserted car park..... Some girl (or girls) would then be screaming and scampering off down the road as fast as their high heels would take them..............
We were of course pissing ourselves laughing inside the car - and I mean almost literally wetting ourselves!!! :lol: :lol:

Funnily enough despite what I just said, me and a mate used to try and freak out his parents mates when they came round... We used to hide in the trees and swing shit on ropes in front of their faces... Loads of fun! Livin in the country as a kid I was forced to make my own entertainment a lot of the time ... I got up to all sorts of stuff!
That makes my "teenage fart machine tomfoolery" seem very tame in comparison, Marco! :lol:

Mind you, my favourite supermarket fun used to be just as dubiously entertaining - I would place random items in other people's trolleys - aiming for as much irony as possible (i.e. Tampax or Durex in old people's trolleys, home perm kits for bald men - you get the idea) and then trying to observe them at the checkout... some priceless expressions on old lady's faces when they think their husbands have put a pack of johnnies in the trolley, I can tell you! In fairness, (and so I'm not branded as a meany too!) these attacks were rarely unprovoked - usually retribution for having a trolley driven into the back of my ankles without apology, or a car park misdemeanor, but I can't pretend I didn't enjoy the revenge!

There's not much like a bit of clever tomfoolery!
Il always remember a day at school a teacher was late for a class.. We turned everything in the room upside down - desks, chairs, pictures on the wall, the globe was the hard bit it had to be wedged in a corner with a pencil case! She walked in and just broke down in tears! Sufice to say fairly heavy bolokings were recived!!
My class was in the cooking class room... We used to put all the knobs off the ovens in the microwaves. That used to wind her up so much!
She also had tinitis so we used to coordinate makeing various tones round the room.. It used to properly spin her out! I remember one ocation making the humming me and a couple of mates had been "smoking" at lunch. She cought us out as we wernt so clever as usual... She kept us back to tell us off and the more she went on about how she had suffered for years and that it wasn't funny the more we giggled until the point we were all laughing so much she had to go and get the head... Bad news that was! I can't remember what the punishment was! But I do remember stoping laughing and starting be very scared very quick!
Aren't school kids horrible? As soon as a teacher shows the slightest weakness the class attacks like a pack of Dog (Soldiers - see back on topic! ;) ) Teachers deserve a medal (and a pay rise, IMHO.) I do sometimes feel guilty at the mayhem we caused!
That wasn't meant to be having a go at you Hamish, by the way - just a general observation on how the hormones turn teenage school kids into monsters, self included!

Rec is the first genuinely unsettling film Ive saw in a long time.
No torture porn here, just ongoing terror building and building up.
Its Blair witch style camerawork and tension done PROPERLY.
Terrifying.
There's a new one just released in the States that's supposed to be bloody terrifying, Paranormal Activity I think it's called?
Another shaky-cam film like Blair Witch though, which some don't like.
