Hi - am looking to sell my Technics 1210 with the following modifications which bring it easily into the same league as the Inspire Eclipse SE12 V2 with carbon tone arm I had beforehand (£3500 and a bargain at that), and a step above the Project RPM 10 I had before that

Funk Firm FX1200 Carbon Fibre arm in black - really rare, amazing quality up there with the best and you keep the 1210 tonearm base with on the fly VTA and incredible build quality
Upgraded Brass Counterweight
High quality DIY External PSU in aluminium heat-sinked box (based on Qwinns design on here if memory serves me well)
Sorbothane hemisphere feet (had the Isonoes but they looked awful to my eyes and no improved sound quality to my ears)

To be negotiated separately :
800g TT Superweight - these things cost over £100 if you can find one!
And Slate plinth which is just the perfect colour match for the 1210 it looks stunning. Cost me £50 - was planning to keep for my new deck if not wanted

The deck is in fantastic condition - just one tiny chip in the paintwork on the case under the on / off switch - as you see in the 3rd pic. From the front, and in situ with the left side against the wall - its is near mint
No lid but I would throw in an acrylic cover I had made which fits over the whole thing and sits on the table or whatever the deck is on
No cartridge

I simply fancy a change of looks - will probably regret it one day as I don't think I will match this sound or features like start stop / pitch control for anything like this money - and doubt I will find a prebuilt one like this again if I decide to revert back

Understated superstar - looking for £1100 ovno. Can meet up somewhere within a reasonable distance of Hove/Brighton - but would prefer you come and see it first so you are happy :)

Yeah I know - just have an urge for something "fancier looking" again

I feel like I am trying to ease myself out of the hifi game...... sold my huge Meridian DSP6000 for something more room friendly but not as good. And have now sold on their replacements and am selling my cupboard full of amps....... for some stand mount actives which I doubt will sound as good overall. But I am hoping to just deal with it and love the looks of the new ones (they will be none to shabby SQ wise)

So same here - if I can find a stunner, that sounds ok...... I think I may just settle down and be happy

Thanks mate ....Yes and there is the time and effort too if DIY is not your thing. It would probably take me over a year - so you could add an annual salary to the value in that respect? ;)

Can't believe it's been nearly a year since you bought the 1210. My 401's still a work in progress, but then again it did take me a year to put the 1210 together! Jamie's a good guy, accommodating and easy going so should be a pleasant transaction for the 1210's next owner. Good luck with the sale :).

Start a thread on it - you might be surprised how important looks are to people

I start with looks - then find out if it sounds good :) Especially with a turntable that can often be the centrepiece in a room

As with this - I think it looks great, a real design Classic......but now I want something more modern and funky like an RPM10 again

I won't sacrifice too much in SQ - but having it as a visual centrepiece is definitely a priority as well for now :)

May go for an Inspire Eclipse SE12 again - that was definitely closer
although 12" arms are quite limiting, and its budget busting

May also tart the 1210 up a bit with a plinth and a re-spray....but the idea was to not spend any more money, and save some if poss!

How is replacing the deck going to save money?
A wooden plinth will give it a different look, but it sounds like it won't be enough.
Maybe just a short term fix before you get the itch to replace it again....

It is going to take a decent deck/arm combination to get close to what you have, and that won't be cheap.

Jamie, if you want something to compete with what you have now, sonically, then you'll have to spend, minimum, £3k (sans cartridge). That's the harsh reality, muchacho.

Hi sorry I am not too technical so can only point to what the seller told me about it :

"The power supply is the Qwin / 6L6 design including a new regulator, built on boards manufactured by Ken.

The stock transformer has been replaced with a brand new Toroidal transformer and the PSU is housed in a repurposed Aluminium case with sorbathane feet"

I would think £100 would be reasonable considering the cost of the enclosure / parts / time to build?

The only difference between this and the "stock" modified PSU is the use of a toroidal tranny instead of the Technics tranny. I thought this yielded an improvement, Jim's (6L6) thoughts on this was that the reduced voltage allowed the regulator to operate more efficiently:


...Higher voltage is less efficient, as the regulator needs to burn the excess voltage into heat. (That's it's job) So more is not better in this case...

Either way, I felt it performed better than the Time Step I had prior to this and is a significant step up from the internal PSU.

So an empty deck with no power supply, bearing, platter, or arm board still for sale - excellent condition so perfect condition for someone who wants to build back up to their spec :)

And of course the mighty Funk FX1200 - would set you back £960 plus £250 for a new complete arm assembly so £1200 worth of superbly built and well reviewed arm, up there with the best

Silver litz wire from cart tags to phono plugs

Not forgetting the beautiful upgraded (not standard on FX upgrade) 2 piece brass counter weight!

Don't forget you can sell your arm and base for around £100 - £150 (quick check sees one sold on eBay for £135 in Sept)

So £500 for this, less £100 for yours - that's premier league arm territory for £400!!

The FX1200 is a drop in upgrade. And a rare one at that. I think only three were ever made, but I am not 100% sure on exact numbers.

Anybody considering an arm upgrade on an SL1200 should give this some serious thought.
It will be hard to beat for the price. You keep the VTA on the fly adjustment of the standard arm, but get far better sound quality.

The trouble I suspect is that Funk arms are not forum arms. Very few people on this forum have them, and so very few have any idea what they can offer. There is a tendency to stick with the forum favourites which regularly get a stream of commendations from those who have them, and like them, but probably have limited ability to reference them against others (Jelco, SME, Origen live, Rega). I would try offering it "sale or return". I doubt you'll get it back.

I jumped at it myself having had funk decks in the past and researched the FXR quite a bit - it seems to be very well reviewed and totally innovative as you would expect from funk

Not just another modified rega or boring old SME ;) - and for me the 1210 base and VTA / anti skate etc is one of the best out there for looks and build quality, especially once Arthur has reworked the bearings

I would have thought it is only ever going to end up stuck on the ubiquitous SL1200. It is effectively an SL1200 arm made to sound nicer. I can probably get you an alignment protractor supplied for Funk arms if that makes any difference, but I think I am using the "universal" one from HiFi News and Record Review stuck to an old Christmas card...
