No idea if it'll be as good as the original combo or if it exceeds your budget, but of the new kit available, the Pioneer PD50 includes twin 192 kHz/32-bit DACs and Hi-Bit 32 Audio signal processing. It also has digital in, therefore allowing other equipment to make use of its internal DAC...

Oppo 105 that's the one I have my eye on. Gets great reviews, uses the latest Sabre DAC chips, and plays nearly every format disc.

I am currently using a Pioneer DVD 717 as a transport into an Audio Note Dac 1x Signature

Can anyone recommend a one box cd player that would be as good as my combo?

I am trying to simplify my setup even further and get rid of one more cable...

I might try a Rega Saturn which, as I remember from an audition of it years ago, was pretty good, but further recommendations would be most helpful

Be very cautious - if you like what the Audio Note DAC does, musically, you may find that 'modern' CD players with up-sampling, 32bit chips etc, sound 'sweeter' but musically numb.

I haven't heard an Audio Note Dac in years, so I am not familiar with the one you have but a Consonance Mini Droplet popped into my mind. The Mini Droplet is described as being Linear because it is a non-oversampling (NoS) player with only gentle output filtering. It uses four Philips TDA 1543 16-bit chips and a choice of sampling rates, 44.1, these are two-and four-times and can be switched with the remote, when the player is stopped. So you can run it NoS or not.

It has valves in the output stage.

S/H ones pop up from time to time, only thing is its big and is a top loader so needs a top shelf placement.

I have heard these and they are very good but my view is its the Droplet that will be the one to look for.

Opera is a good shout & the only suggestion in this thread along with the Chevron Audio that I think would actually beat your current setup.

+1 on Oppo, but Cambridge Audio have a bigger range and are well reviewed. I have had the Cambridge Audio 650 and I used it for CD, SACD, DVD, DVDA.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the recommendation. I have never heard of Chevron Audio and the Sabre player. Can anyone throw any light on the sound of this player? I know that's a pretty impossible question to ask but I thought I'd ask anyway...;)

Also if I just wanted to use it for cd playback would I need the player or the player/DAC ? I don't really understand the difference :doh:

Looks like its a cd player with a sabre dac inside which can also be used as a dac for other sources via its spdif etc inputs Bev

Bev, I've always loved Micromega players, for their infectious musicality. Check out the HFW review of the CD-10: http://micromega-hifi.com/v2/docs/press_cd10_hifiworld.pdf

The CD-20 and 30 are also reputed to be rather good. Depends how much you want to spend :)

I have a Russ Andrews Modded OPPO BD83 player and it's quite astounding, probably the best silver disc player I've heard, especially when playing Blu-Ray Pure Audio

If you just want to play cd's then all you need is the player version but you have the added bonus of being able to play sacd, Blu-ray audio etc, if you also want to play from say a PC or streamer then you need the player /dac version with all the digi inputs which then acts as a high quality standalone dac too, both versions run through the same dac though.
I have had many players over the years and this beats them all, a chap I know sold his Benchmark DAC2 and bought one after auditioning it.
If that one is still for sale on the site I linked to then I would snap his hand off and Colin will sort out any problems if they ever occur.
If I had to describe its sound I would say natural.
