why does this cd player only work on its side ?

I am absolutely perplexed why on earth this cd player from cyrus which has had a new laser should only work on its side

The kind of fault is in itself not uncommon, but service centres prefer to sell you a whole mechanism instead of replacing the transistors. There are four transistors in a sort of Wheatstone bridge class A configuration to keep the sled steady in a certain position on the disc whilst the data is read by the laser pickup. But if one of the transistors goes leaky it starts to malfunction.

thanks guys . that's very interesting . I wonder if its cost effective to get it repaired . apparently cyrus charge 250 just to look at it and that's a bit steep. any cheaper alternatives ?

Well this rather nice little Cyrus player has been in use now every day for several weeks
Its rather excellent sounding and most of the time plays OK. It is very temperamental. I bought a very rare CD and it said no disc. Then I played another disc fine , put the rare one back and it played it just fine. What type of CD player needs to warm up before it will recognize discs!!

It won,t play CDRs either but other than that its not bad , oh and it does skip for a second regularly

where did you get the new Laser out of interest?

I have had some from CPC which appear to be and are sold as genuine, which have an 'incorrectly' set Platter Height compared with the original.

I discovered this after giving up on a Cyrus with exactly what you describe and that wasn't the first time I have come across this.
If you still have the original Laser it would be worth checking the Platter Height. Tricky, but not impossible to 'put right'. I had to re-set one just this morning on a Cambridge CD Player requiring a new Laser.

If it cures it please do let me know.
