Got that installedcTim.... Does switching on airplay switch off samba? And exactly what does the airplay do?
Sorry if those questions seem daft but i am:ner:

Hi Grant,

Turning on Airplay starts the Airplay receiver on Moode. This allows you to stream audio from any app that supports Airplay to Moode.

i installed the new version and it wouldn't connect on my iPad . Tried the IP address and mode.local to no avail.

Reinstalled r25 image and it worked - that's weird.

Hi,

Send email to tim at moodeaudio dot org and I'll help troubleshoot :-)

ok Tim thanks.. like I could stream from Ipad to moode via airplay for instance? will samba still work? Reason I ask as in an older model, I think something like that was there and when on my samba share disappeared.

Airplay is great for listening to Spotify or the likes from your iPad via moode on your pi.

I am running 2.5 on two different setups both RPI 2 one with duriosound dual mono and one with Hifiberry DAC + pro.

I switched from Volumio. I've tried a dozen times and a dozen variations but can't map my NAS drives.

They show through my computer and through FTP but when trying to mount them through the GUI. On my iPad or iPhone nothing but a red x.

I've read somewhere that the Western Digitial passport drives might be the problem?
An IT expert friend tells me it might be an issue with the router (Linksys WRT 1900 AC)

Can someone tell me where to go to trouble shoot this? I have limited Linux skills but can SSH into the pi to make changes if that will help.

Thanks,

George

Mystery Solved!

It turns out I had to name the router in the Source field. Previously (with Volumio) I used whatever I wanted in that field. My router is named Red-State (no offense to anyone intended)... I entered that - entered in all the rest including name and password and I'm in!

Really like the sound improvement with the driver made for my DAC.

Now I'm ready to try to set up the unit a built for a friend. He has a different brand of router . so this should be fun LOL.

Hi George,

I'm glad its working :-) but there definitely is no relationship whatsoever between what is entered in the Source field and what a particular Router might be named. The entry in the Source field is simply used as the folder name that is created under /mnt/NAS to serve as the mount point. This name shows up under the NAS folder in the Browse panel.

The source names that I use most often are Music and Test.

I'm not sure why the NAS mounts were failing for you, but if it happens again send email to me and I'll help troubleshoot.

Hi, The Airplay service is a separate service and shouldn't influence the SMB services at all... but you never know... ;)

Is 90 still the software v/c level recommended?

Hi Grant,

If u are referring to the Hifiberry;s clipping at > 81 ALSA volume then answer to your question is no, that issue has been fixed in Linux kernel and Hifiberry drivers included in Moode 2.6. ALSA 100 now = 0dB for Hifiberry's. I'm planning to remove the Hifiberry volume config from PLAYER FIXES on moodeaudio.org when 2.6 is released.

Hi mine is an audiophonics Tim. Seem to have it in my mind it was 90 alsa software in 2.5. On 2.6 either first or second release. Seems good so far although not tried out anything fancy. Just not seen anything in the set up to say where's the sweet spot was. Mine is at 90 currently

I've had a couple of times when the software locked up and I had to un plug then plug back in. Both times were when I was using Tidal. First time I was downloading - second time I just wanted to play. The AirPlay showed that it was connected to Moode and Moode play screen showed AirPlay but there was no sound. I tried to reboot and it "couldn't find the file."

Any ideas?

This is strange - the tidal works on the iPhone just not on the iPad. Easy enough to work around.

Just hit a snag on my moode 2.6 version test. Either 1 or 2.. Forgot now but went to send a ripped disc via samba share as per usual and i got a message saying insufficient space on usb... Tried it a few times and reset things etc but same problem. I put my copy of 2.5 in again and it went no problem.
Is this just a flaw on my program or is it/was it a flaw in 2.6 test code?

I just tried getting moOde to work as a file player for my RPi 2B.
Most things seems to work, i have been able to get WLAN working and it has indexed my 2Tb externally powered USB disk.
I have access to the interface via it's IP Adress and all.
Audio output is over USB into an S.M.S.L M8 DAC...
The problem is, all i get out is a horribly distorted sound with the intended music way back in the noise...

The audio info screen looks like this during playback:http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160521/32c8a2762bec5b6508752049a9a973af.jpg

The I2S is set to Off, and under MPD settings everything is set properly (to these eyes), with USB Audio.

Any ideas?

Sorry to harass you guys that have been using moOde for a while now!
But, im not pleased with the way the library view works and i have two main gripes:
1. If you sort on Artist-tag, dont include "the", "a" etc in the sort order (See piccie)
2. There need to be some sort of indexing, i dont know how many 'swipes' i had to spend to scroll down to this part of the Artist-list! (library disc has got some 50.000 songs, by various performers)
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160522/277280c2283d44ec6ca0c8010f21427f.jpg

Can something be done about this? On the Browse view, i have better control as the harddrive is organised into indexed folders, sorted by Album Artist which is hard tagged to, say "Beach Boys, The"
You can see the library structure on the bottom part of this screen:

I again tried 2.6 this time test release 4.. The problem adding via samba to my hdd is still there. Just comes up no space on disc although there is in fact plenty. I returned to 2.5 and it accepts new music..
Obviously i seem to be the only person to have encountered this but as its happened on 2 different releases i cant really blame my set up now.
So i will have to stick with 2.5

Hi Tim,

Hope you are well :)

Moode is great, but one thing that annoys me is when you type the name of an artist/group into the search box, and all that comes back are individual tracks from the artist/group searched on, not albums, which is quite frustrating, especially if there happens to be 20-odd relevant albums stored on your hard drive(s), and so often 100s of tracks pop up, but with no immediate access to the albums which the tracks come from.

Is there any way you could alter the software so that albums, not tracks from albums, appear when the search box is used? :)

Marco.

Try doing a reboot via the web interface and then check library, mine did this and although it looked like it was just sitting doing nothing it had actually added my library.

Hi Tim,
Glad to say I've got TR7 up and running fine but one thing I have noticed from TR5 onwards is that when you apply an MPD config it fails to connect but after refreshing the page all is ok on Chrome, with Firefox it asks you to reconnect which sometimes works and sometimes shows page unavailable requiring a refresh which then shows the changes as completed.

Running on a Pi2 with the Hifiberry Dac+

Hi Tim,
It's an ethernet connection but I've had a few issues with my router playing up recently but thought it was just causing intermittent problems with the WiFi, so that may be tied in.
I'ts not a major problem as I can work round.

I've got my third build up and running with the DAC listed above. I was wondering if there was any way to use the headphone out on the pi or if it is permanently disabled when I installed the Hifiberry

Right now there is no sound available at that output.

Thanks for your help.

Hi George,

Can't have both the Pi audio out and DAC audio out active at same time. Options are to use IQaudioIO Pi-DAC+ which has integrated headphone port or use a USB DAC that has headphone out.

Btw, the audio out on the Pi is really poor quality anyway.

Great work, Tim! I shall try 2.6 out very soon.

A suggestion for a next version: would it be possible to add the ability to record from radio streams? This would, of course, also need a way of scheduling specific programmes, for example to record BBC Proms concerts from the 320k stream. I already do this using Node.js and VLC (via its command line interface) on a Mac, but having it built into Moode would be very cool. Not sure if it would be do-able?

A huge thank's, Tim, I will be installing 2.6 on a pi2 in the next couple of day. Great stuff !

Hi Rob,

Yes its definitely possible since MPD compiled with "recorder" option, but challenging to implement because like a DVR there would need to be a scheduling system, a way to manage recordings, etc. There is scheduler code in Moode worker php thats used for Clock radio but its pretty simple.

Hi There,
Thanks Tim downloading now and will configure this evening.

Any Chance in future version you could also link BBC Radio 4 Extra in the radio section.

The link is http://bbcmedia.ic.llnwd.net/stream/bbcmedia_radio4extra_mf_p

Hi Tim

Got 2.6 up and running, but I have a problem - I can no longer find any option to disable the playlist, or to set my iTunes NAS source to random play. With a huge iTunes library, the UI freezes up trying to build and display the playlist, which was a problem you solved previously

Otherwise looking good. Took a few goes to get my Digi+ up and working on the Pi, but all sounding very good now.

Hi Rob,

That feature has been replace by the new Auto-shuffle feature. There is a setting to turn it ON/OFF in System config. When its ON the "Random" button on the Playback panel launches "ashuffle" daemon instead of enabling MPD random play. Ashuffle selects a random track from the music collection, adds it to the end of Playlist then starts playback. When the track finishes, ashuffle adds another one. Moode implementation of Auto-shuffle also enables MPD consume mode so the track gets deleted after it finishes thus the Playlist never grows :-)

Hmm I already have Auto-shuffle set to on - for me, it still tries to build the playlist from the entire iTunes library and brings the UI to a halt.

Another thing I've found. I have a USB thumb drive in the Pi - it appears to be mounted read-only, so I can't transfer new files to it over SFTP

Thanks for your help, Tim!

Hi Rob,

Just ran quick test of Auto-shuffle on a couple of my systems and no issues. It adds one track to end of Playlist, deletes it when finished and then adds another one. One of the systems scrobbles to last.fm MoodeAudio http://www.last.fm/user/MoodeAudio Note that with Auto-shuffle there is no need to ever manually add anything to the Playlist.

USB drives should be mounted RW. Below a line from output of "mount" cmd for one of my ExFat drives. What does "mount" show for your drive?

/dev/sda1 on /media/EXFAT-128GB type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,sync,user_id=0,gro up_id=0,allow_other,blksize=4096,uhelper=udisks)

Turned Auto-shuffle off and on again, rebooted. It still grinds to a halt on the playback screen after I select Clear/Play on the iTunes NAS menu

Not sure I'm using the right commands:

pi@moode:~ $ mount /media/PI-MUSIC
mount: can't find /media/PI-MUSIC in /etc/fstab
pi@moode:~ $ cd /media
pi@moode:/media $ ls
PI-MUSIC
pi@moode:/media $ ls -l
total 16
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 16384 Jan 1 1970 PI-MUSIC

I certainly can't write to the drive.

Hi Rob,

When Auto-shuffle is ON all thats needed is to press the Random button on Playback panel. You should see a track automatically added to Playlist. No need to ever manually add anything to playlist. I amended my earlier post to mention that.

from ssh just type mount with no args.

Actually most of the time, even with the random play symbol clicked in the Playback panel, it's playing tracks in sequence rather than at random. But because the UI has ground to a halt, it becomes unusable.

Something definitely isn't working correctly on my Pi with 2.6 :-(

OK, I have to say, that isn't at all obvious - so I don't actually select my iTunes library from my NAS list. It's working now. How does it know where to select at random from? Does it use all the configured NAS sources? Does it also select from USB sources too?

Mount shows this:

/dev/sda1 on /media/PI-MUSIC type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,nodiratime,sync,fm ask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=ascii,s hortname=mixed,showexec,utf8,errors=remount-ro,uhelper=udisks)

which suggests it's read/write, but I can't write files to it - my assumption is it's a permissions issue.

Hi Rob,

Auto-shuffle reads MPD database thus all music sources are included. Here is link for more info https://github.com/Joshkunz/ashuffle

Hello, I made a Moode based RPI for a friend and it is working well. He asked about how he could play spotify or other streaming service from his phone to the pi. I just use AirPlay but he has an android phone.is there a way for him to stream via his phone to the pi?

I was wondering something similar, are there any Spotify Connect-ish functionality in moOde?

And, im having trouble connecting to my QNAP NAS shares. I do not want to supply username/passwod for these as my music shares are all read-enabled for guests.

Cheers!

Hi,

Moode does not have integrated Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz etc, rather u can turn on Airplay receiver in Moode and then play Spotify from Smartphone, Tablet or PC via Airplay.

What are the entries in Moode NAS config screen?

Hi,

Attached are some screen shots of a new in-place software updater that will be included in Moode 2.7. The updater can also be bootstrap loaded into Moode 2.6 using a bit of SSH.

This initial version provides a mechanism for updating Moode that can quickly deliver bug fixes and code updates thus eliminating the need to install new image. Future enhancements to the updater can provide migration of settings, sql and complex OS changes.

Regards,
Tim

I have to say, Tim, I do like the new random playback which selects from all your NAS sources (and USB ones too if you have them?). My several years of recorded Proms concerts now pop up from time to time which is great!

The latest version is also a lot more stable for me. I tend to leave everything running all the time and would often find Moode to be no longer working next time I tried it, requiring a forceable reboot to get it going again. That seems to be a thing of the past - so far it's just kept running day after day.... famous last words of course!!

Also I may be just deluding myself, but the sound quality seems to have improved.

Moode just keeps getting better - great work!!

hey, hi, I was trying to find some info on how to ssh Moode in order to make the current 2.6 version automatically update.
Are there any instructions available on how to do this ?

And has the standard Moode password changed ?

I used ssh root@ip-number-here
passw. "moode"

but couldn't get in

thank's for any help

There's been some changes. ssh username is now "pi" and password is "raspberry". I've also found that the IP address changes between each reboot, so do this instead:

ssh pi@moode

Hi,

Below are instructions for downloading and installing the new in-place software updater for Moode 2.6.

Download and install updater.sh via ssh

1) cd ~/
2) sudo wget -q "http://moodeaudio.org/downloads/updater.sh.zip" -O updater.sh.zip
3) sudo unzip -q -o updater.sh.zip
4) sudo mv updater.sh /var/www/command
5) sudo rm updater.sh.zip

Run Updater for first time. This will install the latest fixes and updates for Moode 2.6, one of which is the UI version of Updater on System config screen :-)

1) sudo /var/www/command/updater.sh r26
2) sudo reboot

NOTE 1: one of the updates will revert the theme color on the Playback panel to the default Emerald. To correct this, toggle to another theme color then back to your favorite color, then refresh the screen.

NOTE 2: if u want to see how the UI version of Updater works then delete /var/www/update-r26.txt file, open System config page and click "CHECK for software update", then VIEW to examine the content of the update and then INSTALL :-)

NOTE 3: Updates cannot be undone since there is no rollback mechanism in this initial version of Updater. Updates in a package are repeatable i.e., the package can be reinstalled.

Below is the list of fixes and updates contained in the initial package.

NEW: In-place software updater
UPD: Improve watchdog monitoring to include MPD restart
UPD: Change MPD socket connection to use debugLog()
FIX: Remove circular symlinks in /mnt for NAS and SDCARD
FIX: Playback panel toolbar not visible on iPad Mini

I think I mentioned before that in 2.6 I'm unable to copy files to a USB drive. I have one mounted as /media/PI-MUSIC. The problem is a permissions issue: when it's mounted (which happens at boot time), the owner is root. Is there a way to change this to being owned by the "pi" user when mounted? That ought to resolve the issue.

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

I'll investigate. You are using OS X correct?

What happens when u connect directly to the share using Finder, Go, Connect to server... ?

Same way Tim . its connected to a usb on RPI and is self powered. Pc sends new songs to it via Samba share over wifi to router then ethernet to RPI, then updated. It wont send with 2.6 and says its full, which its not. There is other stuff on the hd but its never been a problem before. The Drive on 2.6 does get a earlier name now as My Book where with 2.5 it just comes up with what is on the disc. I didnt know if this might be an issue or not

Hi Grant,

Moode 2.6 uses a new USB auto-mounter that mounts disks by their disk label (name). This prevents USB port hopping that was an issue present in Moode 2.5 audo-mounter.

If u are using Windows, open File Explorer, click on "Computer" and then select "Map network drive" from the menu bar.

Enter \\moode\USB\My Book

Ok I will give that a go. not sure what to do next but I take it I send music through that connection rather than from the moode usb one I usually do?

Only one way to find out lol.. I will power the stuff up downstairs, as I have a cd to add anyways.
Thanks again.

Any idea how to get Radio Paradise to work on my old release of Moode (2.3 2015-09-05)?
It just stopped working and I assume the URL is out of date. I have no idea where to find a new one. I did try putting one of these URLs into Moode, but nothing happened:

It seems to have fixed itself overnight and works fine using the 320K UK URL.
Actually, I reckon the stream was interrupted yesterday rather than the Pi/Moode misbehaving.

Hi,

Moode 2.6 2016-06-27 update is available.

READ CAREFULLY

1) This update can take several minutes to complete due to components that are downloaded and installed from Jessie repo. After pressing INSTALL, ignore the message "Software update complete, Reboot required" that appears almost immediately and just wait 3-5 minutes. There is bug in Worker that prevents System config screen from auto-waiting before displaying the completion message. The bug is fixed in this update.

The update process can be monitored by ssh TOP to determine when its ok to reboot. Look for apt-get and mandb running. When they are both finished and no longer appear in list, its safe to reboot.

2) This is the first update to provide new radio stations, logos and other settings via in-place SQL updating. After rebooting, select "Update this folder" for RADIO or alternativly run UPDATE MPD DB from the Source config screen so the new stations appear in the RADIO list.

3) PHP/NGINX Interprocess Communications (IPC) are updated to use fast UNIX socket instead of slower Network stack. PHP session handling is updated to use fast memory cache instead of slower disk files.

4) New settings in System config, Peripherals section for Keyboard and Layout codes compliments of coding by Richard Parslow.

5) One of the updates installs html files that revert the knob colors to Emerald. Use Customize to set another color, then back to your favorite color, then refresh.

Finally, it's always a good idea to BACKUP the SD Card before installing updates :-)

Enjoy!

Regards,
Tim

A couple of things - after backing up the SSD and restarting Moode, I can't find it by its DNS name from a Mac on the network. I can access it via its IP address however. Any ideas why it might have lost its DNS name (moode) and how to rectify it?

Secondly, I installed and ran the updater. However, clicking Check for Updates tells me it's up to date and it won't find and install your latest Moode 2.6 2016-06-27 update

About shows: Release: 2.6 2016-06-07

Again, any thoughts / ideas?

A couple of things - after backing up the SSD and restarting Moode, I can't find it by its DNS name from a Mac on the network. I can access it via its IP address however. Any ideas why it might have lost its DNS name (moode) and how to rectify it?

Secondly, I installed and ran the updater. However, clicking Check for Updates tells me it's up to date and it won't find and install your latest Moode 2.6 2016-06-27 update

About shows: Release: 2.6 2016-06-07

Again, any thoughts / ideas?

Cheers

Rob

Hi Rob,

Odd.

1) sudo rm /var/www/update.r26.txt

2) System config, CHECK for software update

This should list the 2016-06-27 package

3) INSTALL and then wait a few minutes or check ssh TOP to verify that apt-get and mandb no longer appear in the list.

4) reboot

Tim

Deleting the update-r26.txt file makes it find the new update file which is named 2016-06-27. Running the Install, waiting and rebooting all appears to work, but the About says 2016-06-07 again and the new radio stations aren't in the list. All very odd. Repeated it a couple of times

Hi Rob,

Could be stale Browser cache.

Attached are screen shots of About and Moode log after installing the 06-27 update. Remember to run "Update this folder" for the RADIO folder, or UPDATE MPD DB from Sources screen to get the new radio stations.

I've heard several folks using this hardware / software combination in their car and I'd like to try it.
I'm not sure how to connect to the pi however without a wifi network.
Can anyone walk me through this?

Thanks,

Hi George,

Moode 2.6 supports Access Point (AP) mode whereby it provides its own WiFI network. You can connect to SSID named "moode" directly, no Router required. Information on AP mode is in the Moode 2.6 Setup guide available at moodeaudio.org

Hi George,

AP mode has some settings on Network config screen but it does not have a start/stop setting. It starts automatically when the two conditions listed below are met, and yes you can use Ethernet even when AP mode is active :-)

1) A WiFi adapter is present and it supports AP mode
2) An SSID has NOT been configured for wlan0 in the Network config screen

Hi,

Moode 2.6 2016-07-10 update is available.

READ CAREFULLY

1) This update can take several minutes to complete due to components that are downloaded and installed from Jessie repo. After pressing INSTALL, if the message "Software update complete, Reboot required" appears almost immediately, just ignore it and wait 3-5 minutes.

2) This update provide new radio stations, logos and other settings via in-place SQL updating.

6) The wonderful Crossfeed DSP plugin is included in this update. IMPORTANT: To establish Crossfeed/MPD outputs its necessary to perform the steps below after the system has been rebooted.

6a) MPD config, APPLY
6b) System config, set Crossfeed DSP to 725 Hz 4.5 dB then set it back to disabled.
6c) The config can be verified by running the cmd below

pi@moode:~ $ mpc outputs
Output 1 (ALSA default) is enabled
Output 2 (ALSA crossfeed) is disabled
pi@moode:~ $

Finally, it's always a good idea to BACKUP the SD Card before installing updates :-)

Enjoy!

Regards,
Tim

Hi George,

AP mode is activated when there is no SSID for wlan0. Leave the AP mode SSID and password set to defaults of SSID=moode and password=moodeaudio, then boot up without an ethernet cable connected. After a few minutes, from your client computer, tablet or smartphone, open its WiFi settings and connect to the network named "moode" and enter password=moodeaudio. Finally, open a Browser on the client and enter http://moode.local

Quick question here.

I've just installed 2.7. I can't remember which setting I need to use for the volume. Disabled or Hardware? I would like to control my volume via Alsamixer as before.

Are there any other settings I need to know about in respects of sonics, if any? Also, what do you guys have the up-sampling set to?

Thanks
Jo :)

Hi,

As the next Moode 2.6 update nears completion I'd like to mention that one of the new features is support for the Meridian Explorer 2 DAC including its hardware volume controller and MQA audio CODEC :-)

This means that audio files encoded using MQA and MQA Studio format can be played using this DAC. Other audio devices that support MQA format may also work.

Many thanks to user MSimon for spending the time to work through the code changes to enable this exciting new capability.

Got the proper dongle and logged in with no problem - pretty cool. My next hurdle is that I plugged in the USB drive but when I update the mpd database nothing shows up. Does the music have to be in the root directory? Right now I have a directory called music with two subdirectories "flac" and "mpg". The harddrive is a western digital my passport and works fine as a NAS drive. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Couple questions:

1) For the symptom "...nothing shows up" do u mean the Library screen is empty?
2) Is the drive powered externally or does it get power from the USB port?

Music can be in subfolders.

Hi,

Try turning on "Max USB current 2X" setting in System config. Reboot afterwords.

If the drive still does not show up, troubleshooting would require accessing Lnux console via ssh to run some commands the might show whats going on.

I have been conversing with a guy on another forum that says when he plays 24 bit flac files via moode they are converted to 16 bit, played via hdmi to AV receiver, the receiver shows output 16/192 compared to 24/192 via Kodi, is this possible? When I play 24/96 flac files moode output shows 24/96, which I assumed is correct?

Any idea what's going on?

Hi Mike,

To troubleshoot try the following:

1) Clear Browser cache and history
2) Swap to a different SD Card

Its not necessary to format an SD card before writing an image to it so you might want to skip that step and go straight to writing the image.

I could state the obvious :)

Sorry if I offend, but you are dealing with a bunch of people that have spent most of their time trying to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of their Hi Fi systems.

It would be interesting to know if you think any of your changes are capable of influencing SQ. Or is it just that Moode gives a certain (very good) level of performance and its unfair and unreasonable of us to expect any increases in SQ as it evolves. If that's the case then it makes life much easier for us. Then all we have to do is compare the several music players out there, rather than every updated version of every player.

Thanks

The nice thing with these "cheap" setups is that you can easily compare them without too much outlay ... I have tried Volumio and Moode and stuck with Moode because it is much easier to use and Tim is a champ at integrating the wishes of his followers. So, basically, in my case I, chose convenience over SQ - if that is even applicable. Both "players" sounded equal to me and I'm sure that the ultimate goal of the devs is to get the signal to the DAC or whatever as pure as possible. I'm not even sure that you could distinguish any SQ difference between two systems that provide bit perfect streams., both sounded excellent to my ears .. but maybe, there will always be someone that hears a difference... tant mieux.. , I don't know...

PS I see that Volumio has updated their player.... my advice, get a good on board DAC and compare... it will cost less than an average standalone DAC and will give you a streamer for free...

Hi,

I make no claims whatsoever about Moode SQ. Each individual user, including myself has to determine on their own, using whatever method they choose, with whatever audio devices and playback systems they choose, whether they like Moode SQ.

User feedback I receive via forum posts, Twitter and email is overwhelmingly positive regarding Moode and SQ so nothing to worry about from my chair :-)

yeah, I guess that is what I was trying to say... its so cheap compared to the SQ that the question of 1/10th or so better or worse doesn't even come to mind.... I could understand, if we where talking thousands of pounds but hey,,, these systems are so cheap. They are the fruit of the efforts of the DIY community - software and hardware developers coming together to create something that we all can benefit from. So, give it a try and contribute or donate to the effort.

Hi,

Just a few quick iPhone pics of MoodeCase.

The finish is industrial strength, matte black power coat with a zero-fingerprint texture. The rear panels are machined with double-D, no-twist through holes for the DC barrel connectors and Neutrik RCA jacks. A custom speaker terminal block provides easy and secure wire connections. The front panel is shown with a really nice ALPS rotary encoder and vintage Fender Telecaster knurled volume knob :-)

Tim

Aye, ive got inline usb switches on mine for charge and power, and use a battery, but same procedure. Takes a minute or 2 to reboot.

Sounds very similar to how Volumio shuts down so that's good.

you could also use one of these (http://www.audiophonics.fr/fr/kits-modules-diy/module-de-gestion-alimentation-atx-pour-raspberry-pi-p-10912.html) to gracefully power off the pi and associated DAC. The new V3 version of the Audiophonics DAC (http://www.audiophonics.fr/en/diy-dac/audiophonics-i-sabre-dac-es9023-v2-tcxo-raspberry-pi-20-a-b-i2s-p-10657.html) has the power management circuit built into it.

Hi,

Here are some quick pics of an IQaudIO Pi-DigiAMP+ wired into MoodeCase. The 7/8" (21mm) space above the HAT allows the wiring harnesses to float unrestricted.

It's probably in here somewhere but I can't find it, but how do you disable the automute on alsamixer after reboot.

I switch off my HD-Plex PSU every night and having to reconfigure the alsamixer to 100 each morning is a pain.

Hi Mike,

There is no "auto-mute after reboot" in Moode. Does the mute button under the volume knob turn on after reboot?

Sorry Tim what I meant was that every time I switch the Pi back on the alsamixer settings in 'configure' are at 0 and I have to type in 100 and 'set' it to get 100 volume.

I want it switch on with 100 preset ;-)

I'll check the mute button shortly and get back to you.

Hi Mike,

The log entries below indicate an issue with the MPD/Crossfeed config, probably due to the post-update steps for 2016-07-28 update not having been completed. If you complete the steps it should fix the volume issue.

Indicates bad config

20160812 093911 worker: MPD output 1 Output (enabled)
20160812 093911 worker:

Indicates correct config

20160801 212322 worker: MPD output 1 ALSA default (enabled)
20160801 212322 worker: MPD output 2 ALSA crossfeed (disabled)

2016-07-28 update instructions

This package can take several minutes to complete due to components that are downloaded and installed from Jessie repo.

After reboot APPLY MPD config then toggle Crossfeed setting on System config to establish Crossfeed/MPD outputs. Verify by "mpc outputs" which should show ALSA default enabled and ALSA crossfeed disabled.

Remember to BACKUP Moode SD Card before updating.

I want to connect to my car using the accesss point feature to drive my pi and hifiberry pro plus. The high fi berry doesn't have a headphone out so I tried a stereo to headphone cord in reverse (usually I use this cord to connect the headphone out in my phone to a stereo in on my amplifier). It doesn't work well at all with no stereo separation and intense buzzing.

Shouldn't this work in reverse? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Well problem solved - it was a ground loop. I put an isolator in and it went away.

Hi,

Moode 2.6 2016-08-28 update available.

READ CAREFULLY

Installing this update package followed by manually updating the kernel to 4.4.19 via the rpi-update command below will effectivly upgrade Moode 2.6 to Moode 2.7. If the updated kernel is not installed then NO SUPPORT will be provided!

sudo rpi-update 818a860cf690d64c62d3227ad9c36d5867a671c2
sudo reboot
sudo rm -rf /boot.bak
sudo rm -rf /lib/modules.bak
sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/4.4.8+
sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/4.4.8-v7+

The update package can take several minutes to complete due to components that are downloaded and installed from Jessie repo. After pressing INSTALL, if the message "Software update complete, Reboot required" appears immediately, just ignore it and wait several minutes.

1) One of the updates installs HTML files that revert the knob colors to Emerald. Use Customize to set another color, then back to your favorite color, then refresh.

2) The wonderful Crossfeed DSP plugin is included in this update and there is a config change to enable Airplay over AP mode. IMPORTANT: To establish Crossfeed/MPD outputs and Airplay over AP mode its necessary to perform the steps below after reboot.

a) MPD config, APPLY
b) System config, set Crossfeed DSP to 725 Hz 4.5 dB then set it back to disabled.
c) The config can be verified by running the cmd below from ssh session

pi@moode:~ $ mpc outputs
Output 1 (ALSA default) is enabled
Output 2 (ALSA crossfeed) is disabled
pi@moode:~ $

d) Network config, APPLY
e) This will update the configuration for Airplay over AP mode

3) Several configuration changes are included that provide improved support for loading large collections into the Library panel.

4) New commercial-free, listener-supported radio stations and support for exciting new I2S audio devices are included in this update, and a new universal rotary encoder driver that updates Moode volume knob and supports both hardware and software volume.

Finally, it's always a good idea to BACKUP the SD Card before installing updates :-)

Enjoy!

Regards,
Tim

Hi Tim,
Pretty neat to implement the Access Point feature to gain a simple elegant solution to allow a simple tablet control the Moode Music Player and doing away with the wi-fi router (an another box, to boot). The problem is the later solution (i.e.using an external wi-fi router) sounds better. I suppose part of the problem is the AP protocol that requires it to constant broadcast the availability SSID of the Pi to all potential tablets that wish to be a client. You can see this on my particular setup by a flashing LED that is flashing constantly in AP mode.

When the Pi's wi-fi dongle is configured to not be an AP, the LED comes only about once every 10 seconds.

Any chance you could consult with the AP code contributors to see if there is a way to quiet down that broadcasting activity once a connection is in place. I'm sure that bulk of people using this AP have only a single client (i.e. tablet) acting as a fancy remote control.

...just in case your team isn't too busy :)

Hi Ray,

U can try changing the setting below in /etc/hostapd/hostapd.com

This link is useful
https://w1.fi/cgit/hostap/plain/hostapd/hostapd.conf

-Tim

# Send empty SSID in beacons and ignore probe request frames that do not
# specify full SSID, i.e., require stations to know SSID.
# default: disabled (0)
# 1 = send empty (length=0) SSID in beacon and ignore probe request for
# broadcast SSID
# 2 = clear SSID (ASCII 0), but keep the original length (this may be required
# with some clients that do not support empty SSID) and ignore probe
# requests for broadcast SSID
ignore_broadcast_ssid=0

I tried out the option with ignore_broadcast_ssid=1 and found that it does hide the SSID but the number of
"beacons" numbers roughly 400 within a minute interval.

Did some digging and found that the "hostapd" daemon
can have the "beacon interval" (beacon_int).

Here is a description from http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/uci/wireless

MAC80211 Device Options:

Name: beacon_int
Type: integer
Required: no
Default: 100 (hostapd default)

Description:
Set the beacon interval. This is the time interval between beacon frames, measured in units of 1.024 ms. hostapd permits this to be set between 15 and 65535. This option only has an effect on ap and adhoc wifi-ifaces.

The range for "beacon_int" is anywhere from 15 to 65,535 units of 1ms (i.e. 15 ms to 65 seconds): I think something like a ten second (beacon_int=10,000) beacon interval would work for me.
I think the default is currently set to about 100ms.

Should be something straightforward to sort in a couple of days...thanks for your help, earlier.

Ray

[Update:]

beacon_int=1000 was added to /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf and had the intended effect of decreasing the number of sent beacons to one every second.

When larger values (beacon_int=9000) were used, the intended effect of a beacon every 9 seconds, did not take. Instead it seems as if some sort of
internal limiting limits the sending of beacons to no more that once per second ???

Anyone out there familiar with "the other parameters" in the hostapd.conf file that might work around this limitation ?

Thanx in advance.

Hi Marc,

(1) All that u mentioned including custom compiles of MPD, shairport-sync, upexplorer, etc, a bunch of OS stuff deleted or turned off, custom dir structures and permissions for certain things, custom udev rules, alsa config and the list goes on! The distro could probably be made from stock Raspbian by cloning a Github repo and then running scripts to compile and configure everything, but developing, debugging and maintaining install scripts would probably be more work than Moode itself :-)

(2) Moode 2.4 is a vast improvement over the code that I started with way back in 2014, but the 2.5 rewrite I'm currently working on is as radical as it can get with 2.x, everything is being overhauled and with particular attention to improved performance :-)

(3) The orion script (kernel tweak) does not exist anymore for 2.5. The service kills in the script are moved into main PHP worker and the scheduler tweeks not incorporated. There are several old legacy components that are not really needed anymore.

Regards,
Tim

Hi Tim,
I've only recently moved over to Moode from the RuneAudio player. I've been perusing this thread in hopes of not having to bother you again. The above post was from December of 2015...yes...a while back!

First, overall, the Moode menus seem to be more streamlined than those found on RuneAudio. I typically rip my music to USB Keys and prefer to play them that way for sound quality reasons. However, I cannot find a menu to unmount a mounted USB key. Is it safe to just pull the USB key out and plug in another USB key full of music ? These options existed in the other player.

Second, I was curious as to the removal of the Orion script/kernel tweak (aka as Orion or ACX latency settings). I really thought there was an audible difference between them and you did indicate that you prefererred one setting over the other. I thought the intent with the filters was to put them "out there" and to then narrow them down to the preferred setting. Was this done in a "formal" way so that it was decided to remove this choice. In the RuneAudio player, there were a choice of five settings.

P.S. Your earlier hint to alter AP settings in the hostapd.conf file was helpful. I really do prefer the "sound" with a longer "beacon interval" of one second versus 0.1 seconds.

Thanks for pursuing and sharing the evolution of this player,
Ray

Hi Ray,

The USB auto-mounter (udisks-glue) automatically mounts and unmounts USB storage devices. No need to run any Linux commands.

The "kernel tweaks" were from the original OS that hosted the player. They along with some other things were removed during the 2.5 rewrite as part of an overall effort to simplify the code base. Moode 2.7 runs on a completely new OS (moodeOS) that is based on Raspbian Jessie-Lite. Stock kernel settings are used which, based on the absence of any user reports to the contrary, seem to be working well.

Hope you guys don't mind me asking a question that might have been answered before but I have just found this thread on what to me is a new software and have not yet read all the posts ;) Previously been using Volumio but would love to try this.

I have currently an RPI with I2s into a home built DDAC (from Diyaudi dot com forum). I have Ethernet into the RPI and an external USB drive as the music source. Is anyone using such a set up with Moode?

Thanks.

Well, I'm answering myself as I have made some progress ;)

I have Moode installed and working on the RPI. Have yet to hear any music as I'm trying to find the correct I2S driver for the DDDAC. Moode can read my NAS but not the USB drive plugged into the RPI, don't know why it can't read it as it did work using Volumio.

Hi,

To troubleshoot USB issue try the following:

A) Verify the USB drive has auto-mounted by its disk label

1) ssh pi@moode (pwd=raspberry)
2) ls -l /media
3) The USB drive should appear under /media as a folder whose name is same as the disk label assigned to the USB drive

B) Examine MPD log after running UPDATE MPD DB from the Sources screen

1) System config: clear system logs
2) Sources: UPDATE MPD DB
3) ssh pi@moode (pwd=raspberry)
4) cat /var/log/mpd/mpd.log
5) Examine the log for errors, particularly permission errors

As far as the DDDAC goes, usually one of the two Generic I2S drivers in the dropdown list will work. Generic-1 loads the hifiberry-dac driver and Generic-2 loads the rpi-dac driver.

What I2S driver does the manufacturer specify for the device?

Tim, Thanks for the reply. I'll get back in a few days after I find out how to use SSH ;)

The DDDAC is a DIY project on Diyaudio.com that is huge and has a massive thread, but I have not found anything that specifies an I2s driver for the DAC. I did get it working on Volumio some time ago using AFAIK the hifi-berry driver. I will try all combinations after following your advice ;)

Have succesfully connected the NAS box to Moode and configured the I2s driver which for the DAC chip (1794A) and it sounds really superb, thanks to Tim for a very nice interface, including some great Radio Stations ;)

The USB drive was actually a back up of some music from the NAS and is not recognised by Moode. I did access the log but could see no errors, just a nic elist fo the music being added to the Db. I'll reformat the drive and add some music and retry.

Just one question, how to add playlists? I canlt find a way to create a new one?

Hi, Glad to hear that :-)

Which I2S driver did you end up selecting?

Click the \/ icon in the upper left of Playback screen an a "Save playlist" input field will appear at the bottom. Saved playlists appear in the Browse panel.

Wrt USB drive please post the following and I'll take a look.

1) ls -l /media

Thanks for the info Tim,

I used the Generic RPI as I saw in the Audio info screen that it supports the 1794 chip (see attached) Could be imagination but I'll swear that driver has produced more detail than I have heard before using other software players.

I'll plug the USB back in tomorrow if I can and see what the log shows. The Tracks successfully added where from the NAS and not the USB.18191

I'm a happy camper with much music to audition through this set up ;)

Hi,

I was able to include the Advance Audio Kernel in the upcoming Moode 2.7 update by implementing a Kernel select feature on System config :-) Screenshots attached.

There are two kernels, Standard and Advanced. The standard kernel is a mainline Raspbian kernel which in this case is 4.4.23. The advanced kernel is based on 4.4.23 and custom built by the inmates to make 4.4.23-sc1. This kernel provide important audio capabilities as listed below. These capabilities are not available in mainline kernels.

The following are enabled via <params> supplied to the dtoverlay in config.txt

- 352.8k and 384k sample rates for es9023, pcm512x, pcm514x
- Integer bit clock divider for es9023 codec for less jitter on 48K and 96K sample rate
- DSD128 via 352.8k sample rate (either DoP or DSD -> PCM on-the-fly)
- Bypass pcm512x, pcm514x oversampling filter via 384k sample rate

And by chip type / overlay.

PCM512X, PCM514X
- 384K is automatically enabled, no param needed

PCM5102, ES9023
- hifiberry-dac,384K

PCM5102
- simple-pcm5102a-audio

ES9023
- hifiberry-dacpluslight-es9023-audio,384k,bclk_ratio_int_div
- i-sabre-dac-es9023-audio,384k,bclk_ratio_int_div
- mamboberry-dacplus-es9023-audio,384k,bclk_ratio_int_div
- es9023-audio,384k,bclk_ratio_int_div
- simple-es9023-audio,384k

ES9018
- simple-bclk-64fs
- Descr: Use a "fixed" 64fs bclk_ratio for 2 channel, 32/24/16 bit audio

MMAP (Memory Mapped I/O for I2S interface)

Memory mapped I/O is available for the I2S interface providing the Player application enables it. Currently MPD does not enable MMAP. Other players for example Squeezelite do enable MMAP.

The other new feature shown in the screen shots is improved handling of chip options for the Burr Brown family of chips including PCM514x, PCM512x and TAS5756.

Tim

Hi,

Only your ears can determine that, but according to the inmates that developed the Advanced Audio Kernel, feeding PCM512x a 384 kHz sample rate which causes its oversampling filter to be bypassed, improves SQ.

Ah I see, thanks Tim. So I have found 127 songs that are in 'Unknown' sections. Do these need to be manually given tags? I think i read somewhere that there are software programs that can do this? Anyone know of a good one?

Hi Tim,
I have a minor issue when I shutdown Moode when using the Pi-3 (versus the Pi-2) and using a "power bank" (Li-ion 5V portable phone chargers) to run the Pi:

Normally, the power bank will shut off with the Pi-2 but the Pi-3 seems to draw more current in the off state and exceed the threshold limit of current that the power bank unit senses to
power itself down. This link (https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=140088) indicates that it is drawing about 220 mA when powered down.

It is beyond my capability to sort this out but I thought it might be in your ballpark. I will update to the new kernel allowing the BT to be shutdown to see if it might be related to
this new functionality in the Pi-3. No rush. Thanks.

Interested if anyone has a similar set up and if Kali works well with the Moode player.

I prefer Moode to Volumio and would love to have it working with the components I've listed. Over on DIY forum there are a couple of members successfully using RPI, Kali, DDDAC & Volumio so fingers crossed that Moode will also be a successful player with that combo ;)

Hi,

The LCD update engine works with a user-written Python script. Its the path to this script that is required for LCD update engine and not /var/www/currentsong.txt path.

The user-written Python script is responsible for parsing /var/www/currentsong.txt file and using its contents to update an LCD display. Moode does not contain any code to write data to specific LCD or Touch displays, it only provides the event loop (LCD update engine) and metadata (currentsong.txt).

Quick question - haven't fired up Moode in a while and now it is not showing up on my iPhone or iPad under air play. All other functions work and the air play option is on in settings but it doesn't work . I'm running vers 2.6.

Thanks

George

I think if your iPad or iPhone is on latest iOS you need to swipe up to bring up the menu then swipe left to be able to choose airplay on MoOde.

This might be why you're not seeing the option.

Mike.

Thanks Mike ut that's not it. I am able to get to the airplay menu. My Apple TV shows up but not the Moode player.

you could try rebooting with airplay off, then again with it on. might trigger it. Take it nothing else, operating system etc has changed?

Yeah, good idea, I was just about to say the same, any changes made might need a reboot.

Yes, that's wot I run @

Equates to 86 under digital in alsamixer, stops clipping on hot recordings I've found.

Not tried it with 3 yet. Will wait til ear is in and switch. I usually try a number of option with each update, and last few it has been the one im using. I dont have a hang up about which it is, just which i prefer sound of.

I'm running v3 with DSD over PCM set to "No" (IQ dac does not provide native DSD support).

How do I software control the volume as it seems to be either on (1 or >) or off (0) when using the playback volume control with DSD files.

I can only change the playing volume using the audio configuration ALSA volume setting which is not very convenient as each change needs a set command.

Also need to say I am using the IQ DAC amp so have no hardware volume control on an amplifier.

Im I missing a trick somewhere ?

MPD handling of volume with DSD format is confusing.

DoP=no apparently requires MPD resampling to be enabled for volume control to function, otherwise volume is 0 or max. I'm not sure why...

I've installed 3.0 and now trying to do initial setup but when I try to Configure MPD I get this...

mpd-config: connection to mpd failed

So I've been halted at step 2 after selecting audio device then reboot, next move is to Configure/MPD but it fails :(

There's some discussion about this on the diyAudio thread.

No chance of using the upgrade function inside V2.7? Has to be a fresh install? Thanks

Fresh Install

I've managed to solve the MPD issue with help form DIYAudio pages

So onto the next step now lol

Thanks Tim - volume control now working after enabling re-sampling to 24/192. Also noted that DSD 256 files will now play - they 'stutter' a lot when trying to play as DSD alone. The DSD quality still sounds very good considering the processing applied.

Hi,

Set MPD volume control to "Hardware" and resampling to "disabled". Leave DoP se to "no".

Re-test volume with DSD.

Also, if you end up using MPD resampling with DSD then first Install Advanced kernel. This provides 32/352.8 rate which is an even multiple of DSD64, the exact rate for DSD128 and an even divisor for DSD256.

Thanks, Tim.

Just installed v3.0, installed the advanced kernel too.

So... are you guys running with Software or hardware control set in moode? Bit confuzled.

I normally run it with Hardware, and the Moode rotary control at 100 and the same in Alsamixer.

Hi There,
I've just gone with my usual configuration
Alsa volume to 96 and volume control to disabled.
Seems to be working really well with the new kernel.

Cheers,

Thanks Alistair.

I'll give it a go.

Is there a way of showing the output stream information on the playback screen? I'm sure once I had it showing it, unless that was Volumio.

Not important, just for giggles really.
