New amp - and it's solid copper

Hi folks.

Just a little update on my system. Recently sold my beautiful Tube Distinction KT120 amp to get something much less impressive due to other things happening but as these things go I found myself lucky enough to buy this monster of a beauty.

A Tube Distinctions Copper amplifier!

Big shout and thanks to Ian Walker and Marco for the most excellent purchase and heads up.

Sound wise, it's simply stunning.... :eek: Just like my other amp, the separation and presentation is addictive and grabs the 15" Tannoy Monitor Golds by the gruff of the neck and pins em down to work as they should. It's nothing but a perfect match.

I have a choice with this amp to use GZ34's or 5U4G's... the former was used up until a couple of days ago whilst the 5U4G's have now been put in permanent pride of place. The sound is so much more with the 5U4G's. Right from the bottom upwards it has more clarity, realism, weight and slam. It's really quite astonishing.

So here is the BIG question that quite a few ask themselves 'is this your last amp?'... I have to say, YES... it's absolute.

I will be writing more on this post with a full system update because it's been a while, so check back.

That is one gorgeous looking amplifier...I love copper, as the colour changes depending on the light... that deep red in the fading light will compliment the glow of the valves and the wonderful sounds they produce. well done on a superb acquisition :)

Thanks very much. Yeah, the copper aspect is really quite beautiful and even nicer in the flesh as copper has an uncanny way of looking different in certain light.

It's power only. Driven with the Croft to the left. I've only given it a quick buff to remove some fingermarks and it looks superb, need the time to do a full clean. But it's not something to do very regular as I really love the patina of copper.

I would rather listen to it, it's really quite intoxicating. :) But your right, to have something of such beauty with the sound to match is quite something these days.

Sure, it's a cable that Audio Origami fitted... it's quite basic but to be honest I've got no complaints, sounds sweet.

I still use the original connector on the SME as once cleaned and checked it's a really good connector.

It is right up my street and sounds alive, detailed and very dynamic.

Might be the best KT88 amp I have ever heard. With 15 inch MGs you will be talking seriously good sounds.

Yes, it's everything you say. I'm sure with KT88's it's amazing, but with it bring fully designed to use KT120's and using 5U4G's it's positively interstella!

I'm only going off Marco's from a few years back - which was KT88 based if I remember correctly.

5U4G - there are some equivs you can roll with there like 274B when you feel like it.

I bet you keep it for ages.:)

GEC U52 is a 5U4G equiv I'd like but not cheap:( I use EML 274Bs and TJ 274Bs in my preamp. I should sell the EMLs to try the GECs.

I'll check out the U52, crazy prices for GEC valves though. Not sure if valves with a wide envelope would fit to be honest as the rectifier spacing is quite tight... may do so may try in the future.

You're absolutely right - when you own one of these babies [just like real ones] it's for life. Rarely, in my many years of being an audio enthusiast, have I encountered such a near-flawless and 'complete' product as the TD Copper amps. They're just so fundamentally 'right' (or as 'right' as any piece of audio equipment can ever be), which is why their owners very rarely part with them.

Ian, Busaboy daftee, just wanted a new motorbike, so we'll forgive him for his indiscretion! ;)

Yes, the 5U4 rectifier valves really make the amp 'sing', almost as if the amp were made for them - and they're a damn sight cheaper too, than Mullard GZ34s!! :eek:

Enjoy the music, as they say, which I *know* you will. Oh, and don't forget to PM me with a date for coming round and listening to those crossovers!

Music comes in a few forms. I love a bit if Jazz, Classical but my main love is 60's pyschadelia, 70's funk, (not much 80's), 90's indie and decent (non cookie cut) dance stuff. I do love good 'pop' but not any of the current so called R&B featuring rap artist stuff which is so passe and linear these days. Real 60's/70's R&B as well as proper funk stuff is where it's at. :)

I think that was at Owston, Steve, many moons ago? Like you say, that room is a bugger to get really good sound in. Also, the amp has changed significantly (and been successfully upgraded) since then, which also applies with Jo's Copper amp :)

Thing is, my amp was always a bit different from Ian's [now Jo's], component/design wise, and I'm very satisfied with how it sounds. That's not to say, though, that things couldn't be improved further.

Perhaps I'll talk to you about that at some point. So what exactly would you change? I'm guessing it's the six orange 'Mullard' caps. I know you like Mundorf Supremes.... ;)

Hei Josie. A real looker that tube amp and a nice setup as a hole. I see you have valves all the way. I'll bet it sounds real sweet with your Thorens TT. I've been around valves in my "upgratidis". I decided for transistors again when my amp needed upgrading. But after some years with that slightly warm and relaxed sound from the tubes, I knew that I did not want another bright forward sounding transistor. So I went for Audiolab that have a sound to the "warmer side" and enough headroom (watt) to present a similar relaxed sound. The sound from my former SE tube amp were something special and quite sweet sounding, where my current Audiolab transistor have more grip. I like the last, but I also knew it would been have quite expensive if I should have had the same grip with valves. The ones that seem the fit the bill, had a big price tag on them. Maybe some day I sell a kidney and buy a real good tube amp. :)

I can understand where you are coming from. Have you tried any Croft preamps and power amps? They are really good. I was going to go back to Croft but the person I was buying from messed me about too much. Anyways, if you can try and get a Croft amp I'm sure it will fit the bill.

One of my favourite tests for system satisfaction is to sit down and listen to music with a favourite book or a magazine... As you start reading, with the music playing: what captures your attention more the music or book/magazine?

If you're forced to stop reading, simply because the music you're system is making demands your attention, then that's when you know you've arrived at 'Satisfaction City'! :exactly:

One thing, Majors HATE any space between them and the wall [the bass booms, as a result], so get them as far back up against the wall (and sharply toed into the listening position) as you can.

Hey, that's interesting... that's been my findings so far. I thought I was going bonkers as the others liked some room. More experiments tomorrow now.

Today I put some leveling feet on them and removed the casters. Mostly due to our floors not being level as it's an old building.

I'd leave the castors on them until you finalise the positioning - it'll make the speakers much easier to move! ;)

It'll also make adjusting the toe-in angle easier.... I think they also sound better with their castors fitted. But yes, you want the cabs flat up against the back wall, preferably one speaker in each corner of the room, as far apart as the width of your room allows (yes, just about the worst place for most other speakers!), and angle them sharply towards the centre of your listening position.

Then see how you get on :)

The feet I've put are are pretty good, they have a small-ish contact point to the ground too, they are pretty easy to maneuver as they slide over the carpet quite well. They are also a bit better because the kids like grabbing the handles now... grrr... but if I can find a way of leveling them with casters fitted then I'll put them back on.
