Cool... sound and sculpture can coexist. I wonder what they are being driven with?

Look like a modernish WE design

Mercury vapour rectifiers. You are only cool if you have mercury vapour rectifiers.

Yep, you can watch that lovely blue glow pulsate in time with the music. (And it will give some something else to worry about - health hazards of CdS in LDRs is just so last month!)

They used to have a display of enormous ones at The Science Museum when I was a kid. They looked amazing when fired up.

I posted this link over on PF the other day when this very same topic of horns came up. Check out Oswald's Mill Audio, similar over the top but interesting designs: http://oswaldsmillaudio.com/ Eye-wateringly expensive, but certainly way cool even if one doesn't care for valves and horns...

People certainly manage to turn out some ugly gear. :)

I think its great that people can and do make things like this for the lotto winners in life

I would buy a system if my numbers come up big time :D

I think what is even more important, even if we cannot afford this type of stuff, we can still appreciate it for what it may be, the hand-made finishes, the care that went into making it and hopefully the stuff sounds damned good to boot.

I used to think some of this stuff was butt-ugly, but after looking at it and thinking about it, there is a certain amount of beauty in it that is hard to ignore. Well, for me anyway. And certainly, if my lotto numbers came up, goodness knows what setup(s) I would buy, and I am sure some of it would be just as brutally ugly/beautiful as some of this gear!

Now off to buy me some lotto tickets....

You don't like the WE212s, Geoff? I think they look awesome; just the sort of 'old science lab', 'industrial chic' aesthetics that I love!!

I wonder how many LPs you could buy for the price of a pair of those amps?

Excellent WAF by the way!

You know what you can do with yer 'WAF'! ;)

Good hi-fi equipment shouldn't look pretty; it should look PURPOSEFUL - as if it means BUSINESS!!

I like those Marco. The semi industrial look appeals.

It's some of the speakers shown that I see as 'challenged' in the appearance department. Why for instance, somebody would choose a finish that looks like a creosoted shed, I'm not sure. :D

Marco

Ah yes, the horns... I agree there. Some parts look like a cobbled together garden fence!

However, ultimately it's how they sound that matters. That is especially the case when speakers are housed in a dedicated listening room, where concessions to specific decor requirements are a non-issue.

I suspect that the room belonging to the owner of those horns is a case in point :)

Bet they sound fantastic, the 4212 is a great sounding valve.

Isn't that the STC variant?

There was some fairly crazy dude on a forum who DIY breadboarded a 212 amp. He couldn't afford the transformers to do them justice, but reckoned what they did with what he had was great.

There are some enormous mercury vapour rectifiers used to power railways on YouTube. Just plain crazy huge. At work so can't post a link.

you can buy these new for $27,000 a pair but not in the EU/UK as they are not CE Marked
nasty things inside the rectifiers & valves & not very kid/dog friendly with 1500vdc on live terminals

Matching horns if you have the room
