Hi, my name is john. I ve been a lurker around here for a while but only just joined up. I ve always had a big interest in music , both playing it myself and going to gigs. As for home listening it's mainly cd based through my ageing system. An arcam 7 cd player, rotel RA 810 a and set of mission 761 speakers. Although I have also just bought a sony portable hi res player and set of akg headphones. I m am looking to upgrade my home system as I think the newest piece of equipment is 15 yrs old and this is one of the things that has brought this to this place . My problem is I have champagne taste and beer budgets but I ve noticed people seem to recommend equipment on here based on quality rather than the fact it's the most expensive .
My music taste is fairly varied . I love anything with the artist emotion attached . If I had to pick one song to be an example it would probably be , man of the world by peter greens fleetwood mac.
Outside of all that I m an electrician and martial arts instructor ( not at the same time ) .
That hopefully gives you an idea about me . I look forward to joining in a bit more.

If you want advice on how to upgrade your system, you've come to the right place. If you have questions, just find the appropriate area of the forum and start a thread asking questions or join in with existing chats. General Hi-Fi observations or queries can be made in the Blank Canvas section.

Your Rotel is quite a decent bit of vintage kit and probably worth hanging onto, even if just as a back up amp. It's reasonably rare too. The Mission speakers are not rare, but are well liked by our members. Arcam CD players generally sound decent, so your system is open to progressive upgrading rather than replacing the whole lot in one go.

You'll find vintage gear is popular here. Justifiably so.

I'm sure you'll find plenty to interest you.

Thanks for the welcome. Nice to hear some opinions on my humble set up. I think upgrading in stages is the way I ll go probably starting with some speakers. Although I ve enjoyed reading people love for the temple bantam but speakers first ( maybe with the bantam in mind ) . Time to start scanning ebay for some stand mounts.

I doubt you'd find the Temple Bantam significantly superior to the RA-810. Speaker next may be good though. There again, the Missions are pretty decent sounding, so choose carefully. Don't rule out floor standers, they take up no more room than speakers on stands if the widths and depths are similar.

Hi John, I have a simple cheep set up too, and am fairly new to the forum, your dead right about the lack of snobbery here, everyone just seems to want to share thair enthusiam.

Looking at everyones kit does give you gas though. " Gear acumilation syndrome" :)

Ah yes GAS ! As a keen guitarist and photographer I have felt the pain of GAS a lot.

Hi John. I see you've posted elsewhere that your amp is the Rotel RA-810A.

You originally said it was the RA-810. I'd assumed that was correct.

Only an 'A' difference in the name, but they are very different amps.

Hi , yes I see the mistake. I did put the "a"on the first post but left a gap after the 810 that made it less obvious. It's not the one in your photo, I wish it was , that looks a great piece of kit. I didn't think I was sitting on something that special.

Unless you are not happy with the sound, why upgrade? I think that equipment you got is good - its also repairable unlike a lot of the throw away junk on the market today :)

If you gotta/wanna upgrade, do ya research and choose reputable "HI-FI" brands. I always say, "If something aint broke, dont bother trying to fix it."

Anyways, its all subjective and down to the individual ;)
