View Full Version : mobile phones..are O2 the worst!
what is it with these things....built in obsolescence or do the companies send destruct messages to them when you dont update them :steam:
Last month the operator honed to say my contract was coming to an end and whould I like to update. I said no, the phone works perfectly well thanks. He sais , oh well if it still ok then why bother. 2 days later it went wonky, and has played up ever since ;)
I hate coincidences. doh, looks like I may have to buy a second hand one as I aint paying the price of a new one and cant afford another big contract.
Gonna have alooksee on Ebay for an S4 or something like that.
might have been better in the grumpy old man thread

Sorry to hear that your mobile is playing up Grant..
I've just come from a rather expensive contract with O2 where I was paying an amount to pay for the phone (iPhone 5) plus a contract for the call plan itself
As I have now paid off the phone I have come right down to £10.50 per month just for a call plan which gives me... 300Mb data (which can be extended for not a lot when needed), Unlimited texts and 300 minutes... I will save a fortune each month
I did try to go with EE but there Customer Services department is 'off-shore' and I had a really bad experience with them... I won't touch them now...
Sorry to hear about your hassles, Granty. I don't do 'fancy phones', and have had the same basic Motorola one for years!
Contract? If you don't use it much, why not opt for Pay as you Go, and f*ck em? A £10 top up voucher lasts me about 4 months!

Hardly use mine. As Marco says £10 PAYG lasts ages, I use Tesco Mobile. Been using an LG KC550 for about ten years. It is reliable (I have two spare ones anyway). I only bought it 'cos it has a decent camera built in.

Be careful with bigger batteries. I looked into it for my phone 2 or 3 years ago, and the warnings about overheating put me off. Maybe they're better now?
It did occur to me yes. Its made by Anker and there were no bad write ups that I saw. So far its been fine . In fact cooler by far thsn the original. Its much easier to hold too although doubled the weight.
But thanks. I will jeep an eye on it
Its actually what amazon guys use

I think it was something to do with recharging, but my memory is going! Not the phone memory, BTW.
Cheers, I will check it when charging. TBH the old battery got quite hot charging but this one didnt. obviously took longer but no issues so far. I will let everyone know how its going after some use.
Just an update re the double capacity battery. I have had no problems with it and it runs and charges cool as does the charger(original). Average use i am getting 3 days inbetween charges and that is just taking the battery to 50%.
Very pleased. Just need a better sim deal now and maybe get phone unlocked
Fell out with my operator, O2, as they were continuing to charge me for my phone after the 24 months were up,...that is contrary to their jargon and what their rep told me. result is my phone gets cut off tomorrow. ah well such is life I suppose, but they were not getting 22.50 a month for a fairly poor contract at best of times. They said they would unlock it but have refused to do that as well citing spurious crap etc. so folks, I'd advise you to be careful if you are with them as they dont seem to keep their promises.(they also increased the cost of the contract twice in the 24 months yet A contract is supposed to be a contract) disgrace of a company. I will try and get it unlocked myself and get a sim for it...NOT O2 THOUGH!!

No I'm not, I'm in Devon! A long way from the throbbing metropolis, but definitely not offshore. (Some of my colleagues are, but a lot of them won't be soon, apparently).

ee? who runs them, or are they their own masters Shane? any good?
Jointly owned by Deutche Telekom (who used to own T-Mobile UK) and France Telecom (used to own Orange UK). Both companies wanted out so they set up EE to make the whole thing viable and are now selling it to BT, which should go through in the next 18 months or so. The merger between TMUK and OUK gave them a massive advantage over Voda, O2 and 3. Because they were able to combine two complete national networks they were able to use the massive resulting equipment duplication to roll out 4G 18 months ahead of everyone else. Despite what irate customers tell me every day, it definitely is the biggest and the most reliable 2G and 3G network, and 4G is miles ahead of the opposition. Despite all that though, whilst people used to love TM and adored Orange, everyone hates EE, I think because they appear to be an artificial faceless construct. Certainly in the early days of the merger there were some major teething problems and they took their eye off the ball as far as customer service was concerned, but now the problems have been largely ironed out and there's a massive focus on getting service right. There's a long way to go yet (and we minions are feeling the pressure!) but I have no doubt that they'll get there.
I wonder if my area gets coverage. some are better than others around here. Vodaphone used to be the best but not now. Tescos data used to be the worlds worst.
Ta for the info mate

Don't use my mobile often. I just have a Tesco PAYG SIM in it and top up when I get below a tenner in credit. Last top up was July!!
Lol I used to be about as bad as you Geoff, but not quite. I need it to keep in touch with the kids(the boy especially due to his condition) It wouldnt matter otherwise as I only use it in emergencies like the doctor otherwise. I just dont like being ripped off;)
Thats my backup phone all set up. the screen is smaller but its a decently made phone... got £2.34 in it :eyebrows: its got a kevlar back and gorilla glass and is pretty tough. It just upgraded itself to kitat....took an hr and it went bloody hot. might not last too long

This is advertised as free for the basic amount of 200 minutes, 200 texts. Might be useful if a light user and if there is coverage;

EE are the best where we are, the signal has got much worse since the Tmobile and Orange merger as they switched our villages transmitter off as part of what they call ' network optimisation' (that means cut backs really) but the prices are still OK for original Tmobile customers that wont move to a new EE contract. Why would anyone move to new contract from Tmobile to EE to pay more for less minutes.

PM me your postcode and I'll check the coverage tomorrow.
Now cut off! .. They are supposed to unlatch my phone when asked but they kept on finding excuses not th do it. Now there latest is its no longer an o2 phone so tough titties... A joke of a company
Managed to get the phone unlocked. wasnt cheap. and Ive ordered a virgin mobile monthly sim that runs on the EE network. 2500mins, unlimited texts, and 1 gb data, on a 30 day cancel contract for £10 a month. Should hopefully be here tomorrow
New sim arrived as promised.. Fitted and working well. Data is quicker than the others ive tried. Supah

This is the way to go in my view.
Since about 2012 I've bought my own secondhand phone 6 months plus after release and used pay as you go with a monthly package.
MUCH cheaper over a 18 or 24 month period. And if for whatever reason you're too poor to pay one month you still can receive calls and txts (vital for my work) instead of them cutting you off and then still expecting you to pay for the time they refused to provide any service whatsoever.
Think this monthly contract is pretty good value Sam. 30 days notice to cancel but its pretty much all you can eat fir someone like me.. £10 doesnt get much on payg
My phone unlock was £40 so I can follow the deals
Both Virgin and Asda piggy-back on EE's network. Tesco use O2.

Coverage has been very good Shane, thanks for the tip etc. Data is very good too and am regularly getting H and H+.:D

Question for you Shane.
My mobile contract is with Orange.
I live in an interesting area; from a mobile phone perspective it's very interesting.
I have no signal at home, yet there's a mast 400m or 500m away. On the coverage maps it incorrectly shows excellent coverage. It's not, it's piss poor.
The reason for the no signal at home is because we're in a hollow caused by a frigging great lump of hillside. My problem is the geographical topology.
The only way I get service at home is by using the UMA app on my now quite aged Samsung Galaxy S2.
I'm still on the original version of Android too, because the UMA app disappears in newer versions.
Now bearing all this in mind, what can Orange (or EE) do to keep me interested as a customer?
I'm sick of being tied to using a phone that could do with being updated, yet EE can't (or won't) provide me with phones that do UMA, or do what would be the best solution and give me a Femtocell.
I spend £50 a month on mobiles (my son's phone is on my contract too), and yet there's no recognition of the fact.
I can get some very decent deals with more airtime & data for less money, and with Vodafone there's the option to get one of their Surecall units, and O2 have their TUGO app.
I'm more than a bit fed up with EE's attitude on things to be truthful.
To answer the OP - Yes, O2 (and now EE) are the worse, on both perfomance , reliability and customer relations. Change your provider at the earliest time possible.

I'm now a Virgin child:)
Which hangs off the back of EE.
The EE association is why I don't take up the very generous offers that Virgin keep contacting me with - Virgin Media provide me with land line, TV and broadband, but they can't give me decent mobile service, and play dumb about there being alternative ways of ensuring mobile service.
I hope Virgin serve you well, Grant, but they fall short of my requirement for mobile telephony.
Sorry Chris, I hadn't re-visited this thread for a while so didn't see your post. The scenario you describe is a common one. All mobile phone networks suffer from coverage holes such as you describe, but EE do offer femtocells to relieve the problem. I have one myself and it works a treat. There are limitations, in that they're not available to PAYG or SIM only accounts, but otherwise I'm surprised you haven't been offered one.
PM me your postcode and I'll have a look and see what's going on in your area.

Well that leaves 3 and Voda. All the others are MVNOs who piggyback off one of those four (and come to that, 3 piggyback off EE in some areas).
Whatever measure you look at, Ofcom show that EE has the widest coverage on 2G, 3G and 4G, the fastest data speeds and the most reliable connection, with O2 not far behind and Voda and 3 bringing up the rear, but EE fall well short on customer service (as I am forcibly reminded by around a hundred callers a day). The trouble is, no matter how good it is, it's never going to be good enough. All networks have huge areas of the countryside that they simply don't cover, and in cities, they're all desperately trying to keep up with demand. It doesn't matter how good you are, if your customer lives in a hole, your networks is the worst in the world and totally beyond redemption.
Well Virgin has been very good for me. I have a much better deal. also my data is much better speed wise and I'm paying less and all on a monthly cancel contract... whats not to like :) ....SO FAR
