My wife switched the computer on this morning and says there was some kind of upload message with option to continue or something else (she can't remember !) which she ignored. The desktop has now all gone and despite restarting the egg timer spins continuous. Would appreciate some advise / help - Thanks :(

try and get into safe mode and try a restore to previous working state. it will be. switch on and repeatey press the appropriate f button...you may have to google it for tpye of pc. safe mode cuts out a lot of the drivers etc and allows you to do various things

She may well have activated the Windows 10 installer. You'll have to keep it running so that it installs in full. If you are anywhere close to North London, then send me a PM if you have no luck.

Very likely Stan that she may have activated Windows 10. The egg timer has been rotating for hours, no change .....

What did the problem eventually turn out to be, was it just taking a long time for the W10 download?

Just a note to anybody interested. 'Classic Shell' supports Windows 10 these days if you want a traditional looking start menu like Windows 7. I use it on Windows 8.1 and am very pleased with it.

How to boot straight to the desktop in Windows 8.1
Step 1. In the Modern UI, type “taskbar.” Click on the result labeled “Taskbar and Navigation.” It should be the first one to appear on the list from the top.

No idea what the problem was. Wife says she turned PC on, saw some kind of message asking to 'something' as she put it or continue which she says she ignored the message and did nothing. Time I had a look desktop had gone and eternal egg timer spinning which it did for much of the day. I eventually left it off for a while and then re-booted, when I hit F8 ( I don't actually think the F8 actually had any baring at this stage) an on screen message said 'working on updates, 100% complete, Do not turn off computer. It then automatically re-booted with the desktop now all showing as normal. A message then appeared saying Windows 10 was ready - Upgrade or Upgrade later so I opted to click on upgrade which it di without issue. All has been well since. Heaven knows what had occurred, just glad my barely one year old touch screen Lenovo desktop is fine - phew !! :eek:

My win 8 laptop does hang when rebooting. dunno why, but even though they say not to switch off you have to . then restart and it finishes off the update and away you go. If you even try to restart the pc it does the same. you have to switch off either through the normal shautdown of if stuck just hold power for 5 secs. Its a pain, but its been like this from relatively new so I'm used to it

You were lucky, took a couple of days for Win 10 to download to mine, then it caused mass problems till it downloaded a fix. I rather like it now but it chewed thru days and heaps of bandwidth to do it.
