Got back in the early hours this morning from a very hot and sunny North Cyprus, staying mainly in Kyrenia or Girne as it is also known. Had a thoroughly good time mainly up in the North and can highly recommend. The people are very friendly, the food is good and you eat well for not a lot of money. You cant beat the Dökme Et Restaurant for good Turkish food coupled with value - excellent.
For something a bit more stylish, The House was a lovely restaurant - great decor, top genuine restaurant food, wine etc, again at prices you just cant grumble at. The food highlight for us had to be the Chinese House - I was reluctant to go as my experience of chinese, indian, italian food and so on, done by other countries has always been disappointing and unauthentic to say the least. Here I was in for a treat. From the moment I entered I sensed that this was going to be different. Not a turkish member of staff to be seen, genuine chinese decor, plates cutlery and then when the first dish came out I knew I wasnt wrong- every dish was absolutely delicious, the place oozes class. Probably the best chinese food I've ever tasted anywhere, - Highly recommended !!
We did a number of the beaches including Escape Beach, Bafra Beach and Golden Beach - all do food, drink sun lounges etc etc.
Saint Hilarian Castle is a great attraction. You see the ancient history and get to climb to the top which is 732 metres above sea level giving you stunning views across the island. The Troodos mountain range on the Greek side of the island was also a nice spot to visit, where you can walk and take in the beautiful natural scenery.
Visiting the Marine Turtle Conservation Project was a real treat as was a visit to The Blue House where you get to hear all about it's former occupant owner, the mysterious alleged 'gun smuggler' / ' mafia gangster' Paulo Paolides - have a read up on it / him, very intriguing stuf, whatever you believe.
We've really enjoyed our holiday to Cyprus, great weather although the last couple of days were proper mad hot and up in the 40's. It's a beautiful island with excellent main roads, loads of places to eat. It's a nice mix of beautiful scenery, sea / beaches, shops, businesses and restaurants - very westernised and modern in most parts. I saw some absolutely fabulous houses built and being built in the hills and along the coast lines - just gorgeous. There's also the village aspect which gives you a sense of the older less modern Cyprus whilst never really feeling, impoverished or ghetto. I felt totally safe everywhere I went - a great place !
