Seeing Shane's (Southall 1998) ad. for that lovely 303 prompted me to post about my fondness for vintage Quad gear. I have a beautiful serviced 34 and 306 erm, under the bed at the moment, but booted up it's just lovely with the small Harbeths. I'm not saying it outclasses the Croft gear but bearing in mind what it cost it's just wonderful. And I just love the look.

If anyone were starting out with a budget of a few hundred quid you really can't go wrong. Timeless.

:exactly:

34/306 and 33/303 both in use in bedroom / spare room systems. If the Leak ever stops working the 303 will be straight in as a replacement in the main system. Pipe and slippers be damned, these are real world amplifiers for music lovers.

Good post.

Absolutely amazing SQ for very little money.

I've recently bought a 34 / 405-2 and love it. Couldn't imagine anything else as good for the money.

I just LOVE Quad gear: http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?27351-My-Life-with-Quad&highlight=life+Quad.

Still have it all, apart from the valve Quad 22 + 2x Quad II combination, but I have recently added a pair of Quad 510 monoblocks.

Absolutely..
I finally acquired my Quad 33/303 combo back in the early '90s having wanted this set up for many years and it was the best hifi purchase ever :)
It has served me well ever since and has now been rewarded with a DADA overhaul plus some extras to make purists squirm:

I also have a 'stock' 33 (recently serviced by QUAD) and a later model 34 ... just to look at and admire

Crikey Barry, clicked on the link, that's some post. I'll make sure I have a look at that later when I have the time to do it justice. Do you regret letting the IIs go. I had a mint pair but they just weren't matched to my small Harbs so I let them go. I still sort of miss having them !

Good morning gentlemen. I submit a few of my thoughts about the QUAD 44. For those who want the summary first, here's what I wrote: "An initially and appropriately sonically maligned device which emerged like a butterfly to become something really rather good. History is unforgiving though and it was too little, too late – as is reflected in the woefully low typical selling price. If you can find a Mk2 (please read the precise guidelines here earlier re this) in grey and in fully working condition, then grab it."

I normally have a pair of vintage Quad amplifiers working in bi-amp mode to drive my main system these are either a pair of 306's fully serviced, and modified to Dada electronics spec, or a pair of similarly modified 303's featuring all the Net Audio boards and some fairly large capacitors. Both options sound great in my set up, and are bargains even when you factor in the costs of all the mods. listening to 6 music through the pair of 306's as I type this, great sound stage!

I'm using a 34/303 combination into LS3/5as ( and previously into P3ESRs ) and it's superb.
Playing Nat King Cole last night and 'that voice' just came across as so natural.

I also run a classic Sony amp. ( TA-F6B ) into BC1s, but that 'magic' is missing.
Perhaps I ought to buy another 34/303...
